Ulike this year's Grand National they're off. I'm Johnny Watterson and will be keeping you up to date with alll you need to know about the first day of The Masters and possibley some more.

Webb Simpson makes it three consecutive birdies to start his round and leads the field while Jonas Blixt makes five birdies on the first nine, including one on No. 8, the two leading the field.

Before it all becomes too fraught: What has The "Eisenhower Tree,” which once stood on the left side of the 17th fairway and Tiger Woods got in common?
Neither of them are at this year's Masters.
  • 16:18
Darren Cotter Im pretty sure the Fantasy Golf is over already. My team is way to good. Where do I collect the €15,000 cheque or will ye just send it out to be? #FantasyKing
  • 16:22
Kevin Stadler and Mannesero on -2 chasing Blixt on -3, Blixt thru 12, Stadler thru 13 and Massesero has just played four holes.
  • 16:26
Wee Mac made his par 4 on the first hole, His Nordy mate and colleague G Mac has held steady pars thru six holes and is also on level par. Both are 3 behind leader Blixt.
  • 16:26
Avril Burke Can girls take part in the fantasy golf as well? If so can someone give me tips for it!!!
  • 16:33
Blixt has just Birdied the 13th to go four under. What a player he is today. Some performance for his first-ever round at Augusta!
  • 16:33
Darren Cotter Whats the point Avril? The money is mine already!!x #FantasyChampCotter
  • 16:34
Avril Burke I dont think you have the "golf balls" to beat my team darren
  • 16:51

Wee Mac goes into the red and birdies the third hole, par 4. He's now -1 and three off the leder Blixt.

  • 16:55
McDowell is a tower of consistency and has made par at the first seven holes and is level par.

Just in  case you are wondering why Sergio  occasionally needs to chill.
  • 17:14
The man who would do-  if he were allowed -  his pre-round stretch with a glass of Rioja in one hand and a Cuban cigar in the other shows no ill effects of good living. The second par 4, 6th par 3 and 7th par 4 have all been birdied and Jimenez is sitting joint second with Blixt on -3.
  • 17:16
Holy Smoke is that another birdie from Wee Mac on the fifth hole. Why it is! and Rory has gone to 2 under par after five holes.
  • 17:18
  • 17:21
SANDY LYLE HAS BIRDIED 2 AND 3 AND IS  -2 - Need we say anymore. The venerable Scott is all off 56-years-old.
  • 17:26

    Blixt, Jimenez -3

K Stadler, Couples, Stricker, Haas, Scott, McIlroy, Lyle -2

  • 17:31
So Lyle is 56 years old and  a shot off the lead set by Jimenez (and Blixt), who is  50-years-old and hot on his heels is Couples, the  54-year-old.  Then there's Steve Stricker at  47-years-old in the mix....We are all  beginning to fill up.
  • 17:37

Perhaps not the most exciting character on the tour but  a player spoken of as a possible winner this week is the 2007 champion Zach Johnson. Alas - have we used too many cliches yet? The one that comes to mind is you can't win a tournament on the front nine of the first day but you may just lose one. - He's out in 40 strokes, bogeys at 1, 3, 5 and 6. He's +4.

  • 17:42
McIlroy is one of 13 Irishmen to have played in the Masters since Joe Carr's pioneering step on to the Augusta   stage in 1967. Carr played with title holder Jack Nicklaus in '67 and Arnie Palmer in '68 and on both occasions he made the cut.
  • 17:46
Avril Burke How come i cant see my comments?
  • 17:47
Mark O'Shea If Sandy Lyle can win the Masters then United can still win the league! #DavidMoyesFootballingGenius
  • 17:51
Jimenez leads and Stricker is second on the leader board. There's 97 years right there.
  • 17:56
Just caught a glimpse of Sir Nick Faldo back in the day. Look at the sweater he's wearing. Was it Christmas all the time in the '80s?
  • 17:59
Blixt has ended his round disappointingly, Having dropped a shot at 14, he shed another up the last and had to make do with a 70 and with K Stadler he is -2 in the clubhouse.
  • 18:01
  • 18:08
Rory bogeys the par 5, 8th hole and drops back to -1. Don't panic. It's his first dropped shot of the day. Holes 10 and 11 have been  unkind to McDowell. He's also fallen away by two strokes after a clean front nine of pars all the way. He's now +2.
  • 18:16
Darren Clarke is currently +2, having dropped shots at two par 4 holes, the first and fifth. McDowell is also +2 and Wee Mac -1 after 8 holes.
  • 18:18 had Darren at 110-1, McDowell 16-1 and McIlroy 11-4 to win before a ball was struck.
  • 18:21
What the players are aiming for now is better than  a top 50 (plus ties) finish as they and anyone within ten shots of the lead qualify for the final 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday.
  • 18:27
  • 18:28

Jimenez misses his par putt on the 11th hole and drops to -3, alongside Brandt Snedeker and the reigning champion Adam Scott. How long Snedeker remains there is hard to say  as he's just drilled his drive at 11 into danger down the right.

Adam Scott has taken leadership of the tournament, a birdie at 10 putting him top. There's clear blue sky between the Aussie champion and the rest of the field as Sneds' drill into the nonsense off the tee cost him his par at 11 and drops him back to -2.

  • 18:43
Scott has missed only two cuts in 12 Masters starts. He's birdied four holes after 10 and is two shots better than the rest of the field. Rory is three adrift at -1, McDowell +1 and Clarke +3 after a bogey five on the 7th hole.

According to Sky, the RFU has annnounced a new European Rugby Tournamant to replace the current Heineken Cup. More to follow.
  • 18:49
Ben Crenshaw is not so gently slipping out of this year's tournament. He's paddy last at +11. Don't worry anymore though,  he's finihsed his round.
  • 18:49
  • 18:53

The European Rugby Champions Cup will consist of 20 teams, seven from the Pro12, including at least on from each participating country, and six from both England's Premiership Rugby and France's Top 14.

BT and Sky have reached an agreement in principle concerning arrangements for the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup competitions, both of which would be broadcast jointly by BT Sport and Sky Sports.

  • 18:54

That Rugby news in brief here.

    More to follow on that

  • 18:59
Bill Haas has birdied the 13th and moves to -3, one behind Scott. Spieth, Reed and Wee Ma,  who are playing in a group are all on -1 and ready to tee off at the 11th.
  • 19:06
Scott finds water at 12 as he seriously underhits his tee shot, the ball flopping onto the bank on the far side of the creek and rolling back into the water. He's -4 but could drop his first shot of the day. The look of surprise in the Aussie's face. A bad shot!?
  • 19:09
Jack Nicklaus: "We had a great week, had a great dinner. We got to eat a little Australian food. I hit the opening tee shots with gary and arnie. I didn't have an argument with Player. I got it past him."
  • 19:11
"We all know my record has been on Tiger's closet door since he was a kid. Maybe too much of my record is on there," Nicklaus.

  • 19:19
A horrible double on the par 3 12th hole pushes Scott down the leader board as Haas drops a long....long...long putt to go -4 after 14.
  • 19:24
.....And Rory three putts the 12th for bogey... Back to level par. Nicklaus says he thinks the Irishman makes too many mistakes that are not neccessary. Hmnnn... are there a few nodding heads out there?
  • 19:28
  • 19:32
Slimmed down Darren is +3 at the turn, G-Mac, he's level with Rory on level par having nicked two back on the back nine. Just the par 4  18th hole left for him.
  • 19:37
Jason Dufner still hasn't changed his expression from that  disinterested/non plussed look he has mastered. But you'd like to think there is a trigger somewhere that will make him yell GODDAM. He's hitting his seventh shot at 13 and still isn't on the green. Good night!
  • 19:38
  • 19:51
Rory goes -1 after 13 - he's one of 21 players currently under par -  while G-Mac ends his round on level par and four shots behind the leader Haas (-4).
  • 19:53
Rickie Fowler is still well in touch and has finished his first round sitting comfortably in the well appointed clubhouse  with a 1-under par 71.
  • 20:03
Haas, Snedeker, Scott lead the field at -3 which makes Rory's -1look  pretty good. If he holds it togethher or nicks another hole over the final four, he's in good shape.
  • 20:08
Louis Oosthuizen has sneaked up to join the top players at -3. Four birdies after an opening bogey, the South African has quickly settled, No one running away with it. Nobody cracking the field wide open but with late starters Michelson, Mahan, Sergio  and Buba in the early holes.
  • 20:08
  • 20:12
News is Jimenez will play a Senior tournament next week. Times passes. A leader early in the round his -4 has shrunk to -1 with bogey at 11 and 12 undoing the Spaniard.
  • 20:15
Cracking drive from Wee Mac on par 5 15th hole, He finds the green with his second shot and sets up the possibility of getting a shot back.
  • 20:17
Haas birdies the 18th  to hit  back after a bogey on 17. A big smile from the American who leads the Masters at -4.
  • 20:24
Scott pars 16 and Rory birdies 15th to go in the right direction. He's now -2.
  • 20:31
"That's one of the prettiest golf swings in golf I think," says Nicklaus. Two seconds later Oosty's ball plops into the water   a mile from shore on the par 3 12th,
  • 20:34
Leader Bill Haas (-4): "I made some nice putts early. Kinda settled me down. Putter was hot. Saved me a few times. I've lots of memories here. Never broke 70 before  and ecstatic to shoot 68."
  • 20:39
Back to back birdies for Sergio. He slips one in on the 7th from 25 yards, left to right, and he's -1. All pars so far from Phil Mickelson through 5 and an  Eagle for last week's winner Matt Jones on 13, which takes him back to level par. Only 19 players now under par.
  • 20:43
Rory on 17th. Hits the green. Birdie putt from maybe 15-20 feet. Perfect.
  • 20:46
Lee Westwood is one over thru 5, his mate Darren Clarke still three over after 13 holes.
  • 20:50
Rory's the senior player in his group. With Speith and Reed, he's the only one of the three that has played at Augusta before. He safely makes par and is -2 going down the 18th.
  • 20:54
Down the 18th and Rory is in the fairway bunker. He's only 120 yards from the green but the bunker has a high lip and he's well up in it. Shame to drop a shot here but he'll have to scramble a bit and dig deep.
  • 20:57
  • 20:58
  • 20:59
  • 21:01
Rory thrashs it out of the bunker and falling backwards gets it over the lip  on the 18th. He hits the green but down a level from the pin. Happy to be on the surface.
  • 21:02
    The leaderboard as of 9pm
    The leaderboard as of 9pm
  • 21:03
Wee Mac bangs it five feet past the pin. Hole for par and he'll walk away with a large smile on his face, Miss it and he'll feel he left something out on the course.
  • 21:07
Rory has never three putted the 18th in all of his previous visits. He has today and still has four feet for bogey. A sigh of resignation and a little frustration but he's well placed with a 71, Rookie Speth is also on 71 and Reeds on +1.
  • 21:10
"I played really well from tee to green. Left a couple out there. It's something to build on. The adjustment you have to make for here (the greens) after playing in regular events is drastic." - Adam Scott.
  • 21:10
  • 21:14
Darren is still on +3 but he's in good company with Kaymer. Michelson  and Jason Day also struggling from +3 to get into red numbers. Big Phil took 7 blows on the par 4 7th hole.
  • 21:24
Steve Gallacher misses eagle putt from   a couple of feet at 15 and leaves it further away past the pin. His return four footer almost lips out. He misses getting his piece of crystal that Augusta gives to players for Eagles. But he's still -1 thru 15.
  • 21:26
Rory Mc Ilroy (71): "I feel ok about today. The golf course set up was very difficult for a Thursday. To shoot under par I thought was a good effort. The wind picked up. It was swirling all over the place. You had to be really patient out there.  I feel I'm better prepared than I ever have been and I think I'll feel like that every time I come back."
  • 21:29
The scoring average today is 746.677 which is a shot higher than in 2013. Rory's comments on the pin positions being difficuly for the first day appears to be bearing out.
  • 21:35
Jason Day is now on +4 after 11 holes. The rise in temperature you might feel is the heat coming from burning betting slips.
  • 21:38
Jordan Speith  on his first shot  of the Masters on hole one. "I wanted to save it. I stood over the ball. I'll never have it again. I hit it down the middle so I was really happy."
  • 21:39
  • 21:40
They are putting through the shadows now
  • 21:44
Only three players on the course are under par as the conditions get tougher for the players. We need someone to rip the course apart and its not going to be Big Phil, That or loads of balls in the water. Haas -4 looks safe,
  • 21:49
No sound of Kuuuuuuuch around the magnolia trees for Matt Kuchar. It's because he's +1 after 15 holes.
  • 21:51

No fairytale this year for Ernie Els. He's already +2 coming up 9, and now he's taken two shots to get his ball up and over the big ridge at the front of the green. He'll be dropping  another stroke there.
  • 21:59
Phil sinks one of those crazy putts that goes 40 feet before making a sharp  right hand turn and down a slope for a birdie 3 on the 10th. What a way to start the back nine.
  • 22:06
Louis Oosthuizen is the only player on the course on the leader board, Bubba the only other player under par on -2   and  still sporting that closed top button  look.
  • 22:08
Sergio has just gone to -1 so you can add his name on to the  men in red.
  • 22:14
Sang-Moon Bae holes from the back of the green on the 16th and swings two shots from +1 to -1. It took abot 40 seconds for the ball to dribble dowe the slope,
  • 22:21
Darren Clarke ended strongly and birdied two of the last six holes to close the day  on 2 over par - six behind the leader Haas.
  • 22:32
Oosty goes birdie, birdie in the final two holes for a 69, three under par. It's not as good as leader Haas but there's a few out there including Monty who think the South African's is the round of the day. Kuchar finishes on +1.
  • 22:36
Just 3 players scoring in the 60s so far, Haas, Scott and Oosty.
  • 22:39
Saying Buba looks relaxed is like sayig that Tonight with Vincent Brown is a laid back, middle of the road chat show. Still the lefty is -2 and hits the green on 15 with his second after a massive drive.
  • 22:40
"How can anything so beautiful be so difficult," asks Col, Critchley on Sky. He needs to get out more.
  • 22:46
"How can that ball not hook," the Big Easy asks Irishman Colin Byrne after his  approach runs into a brook on 13.  Colin scratches his head and stares in disbelief at the water. The things you have to do as a bagman.
  • 22:49
Bubba moves to -2 taking advantage of hitting the 15th green  in two, while Els plays from the water on 13 badly splashing his white slacks and barely getting  the ball  up the slope.
  • 22:52
  • 22:57
Lefty Phil was fooling us all with that treble on seven. But its not a sprint and he's back to +1 in his pin striped trousers.
  • 23:04
Buba best man on the course at -3 and two holes to play, while Westwood will have to go deep into the jungle to find his hooked drive on 13.
  • 23:06
Westwood finds it, hits it and makes the 13th green. Just the way we all like to do it.
  • 23:15
Bubba goes to the last hole 3 under par hoping for one more shot to put him level with Haas after the first round.
  • 23:19
  • 23:22
Phil hits it into the water on 15 after the lay up. Hitting off the down slope to a green higher up gave Dustin Johnson grief earlier. Either way its a dropped shot for Lefty.
  • 23:25

Sergio has gone in the head. His approach to 17 is short, and he fails to get up and down, missing another short putt. He's got the 'I will never win a Major' look on his face.
  • 23:27
Buba hits it into the bunker on 18  just where Wee Mac did earlier. Michelson takes five to get down from 80 yards on 15 for his second 7 of  his day.
  • 23:28
Hushhhhh we haven't heard 'Doo bee doo bee doo' yet for French player Dubuisson. He's +1.
  • 23:36

Bubba lands in exactly the same place as Rory did from the bunker at 18. Wee Mac took three to get done. Bubba needs birdie for -4 and par to stay -3 for joint second with Scott.

  • 23:39
  • 23:46
Bubba finds good length on the 18th green. A short putt for -3   and not one dropped shot on the day. A remarkable feat for a player who blasts the ball. Bubba becomes only  the fourth player to break 70, Three birdies, 15 pars and he sits one behind the leader Haas.
  • 23:49

The remaining big names are still over par including Els, Lefty. Mahan and Rose. Good shooting tomorrow required. All is not lost. See you all then. Good night.

  • 23:50
