Welcome to the final day's play at Hoylake with Ireland's Rory McIlroy poised to win his third Major Championship. Another sunny day around Liverpool for the 25-year-old to build on his six shot lead.
McIlroy is due out in just over an hour with Graeme McDowell teeing off at 1.40 and Darren Clarke 1.50. Both players are -5. On the course now Shane Lowry has birdied two holes thru five and also sits on -5.So he's now hoing for a strong finish to the weekend.
I'm Johnny Watterson and will be with you for the afternoon's play...all the thrills and spills...

Tiger has just walked off the course. he's smiling maybe because his game is run. He closed with +6, a Wood and a Woodland above him on the table...
  • 13:39
My colleague John O'Sullivan who is ably bloging all things GAA has his money on Sergio, Fowler and Frenchman Dubidobidooo...Victor Dubuisson...Interesting
  • 13:43
McDowell tees off - the US Open winner a few years ago - draws it beautifully into the middle of the fairway. He's playing with Justion Rose. Big D is on his tail with Charl Schwartzel, his buddy for the day.
  • 13:48
Rory is a big supporter of Ulster there will be a few big units up around Ravenhill Road willing on the former Sullivan Upper boy. Irish and Ulster centre Darren Cave and Rory are good mates and spent some time in Vegas a few years ago on holidays...
  • 13:57
Crikey Schwartzel has hooked left off the first tee. Great Walloping Woods Batman he's landed it on well trodden rough and should be able to put his stick on it...
Big D has spanked his into the rough, the ball having run out of first fairway. Need to see that one closer up...
  • 14:00
Chris Wood shoots 65, the lowest round of the week. Four birdies to finish...Actually Big D had to play out of a bunker. He's on the first green in three....we ...all think
  • 14:01
So Rory's dad put a bet on 10 years ago that his son would win the Open before the age of 26? Well, I'm sure he needs the money...
  • 14:03
Lowry is going stead after a cracking start. Two early birdies and pars all the way thru 8 holes has him still at -5
  • 14:08
McIlory is still banging balls out on the range, Rickie Fowler beside him and studiously ignoring the leader...
  • 14:14
Adam Scott 10 shots behind McIlroy. He's on the first tee thinking...well Lawrie came back from 10 shots down to with the Open in 1999 - grasping at straws?
  • 14:15
  • 14:18
Confusion over Big D all round. He made par on the first hole so no dropped shot and is still -5. Lowry stitches an iron to a foot at the 9th and looks set to close his front 9 with 32 and -6...
  • 14:20
McDowell has skimmed the cup twice already. Those balls will have to drop if he is to dent the lead of his good friend..
  • 14:22
Dubuisson sets out his stall and takes out the Big Dog on the first... Bon chance Victor (-8)
  • 14:24
Lowry is doing his best to shake up the leaderboard and begins the back nine with another birdie. He said that attacking the course paid off earlier in the week....well he's now seven under.
  • 14:26
    Leinster Final anyone...

Paul Mannion fouled off the ball. Bernard Brogan taps the free. Dublin 0-1 Meath 0-0
  • 14:28
Lowry currently sits in T6 at Hoylake...
  • 14:29
Rory and his caddy JP chatting away on the putting green looking very relaxed...
  • 14:32
Johnson and Sergio both 7 shots behind Rory tee off. Both need a 65 at least and hope that the Irishman implodes - of course Chris Woods has already done that today so a 65 is out on the course somewhere.
  • 14:33
  • 14:36
Bananas and chocolate in the players tunnel just before the first tee. Fowler's bagman helps himself. Rory follows....lots of people shouting at him ...all of it encouragement. He's walks down the steps and through the tunnel onto the first tee and shakes hands with starter Ivor Robson (yes the high pitched fella)...Just keep it in play Rory...
  • 14:38
Young man's handshake between Fowler and McIlroy, you know that one with the thumbs on top. Fowler in his usual blazing orange ...
  • 14:40
I was about to bet a million Rory takes an iron for placement on the first but he's nonchalantly leaning on the Big Dog...Like his attitude
  • 14:42
Fowler's away. a 3-wood or the like drawn perfectly. Rory has driver. Smoke it there boy...He does and he splits the fairway. A statement okay...

  • 14:47

  • 14:50
Whow...Rory drops the birdie putt. Only 17 more to go but it's like a continuation of yesterday when his late Eagles crushed the field...The crowd gasps...
  • 14:54
Rory needs to supress the adrenalin. Seven stroke lead...he looks a little anxious but is perfectly short of the bunkers on the second hole. Clarke is -5, McDowell -5 and Lowry the best of the lot and -7 thru 12 holes...

    Leinster Football Final

Dublin created 22 scoring chances in the first half and missed probably four good goal scoring opportunities in a tally of 1-12

    Half-time: Dublin 1-12 Meath 0-6
  • 14:57
Rory hits the second green. Just needs to do that all the way around. Nobody is making a dent in his lead. With his length he can easily reach the Par 5s. Is that his game plan??

  • 15:09
Rory is just off the edge on the third. He hits the green but it just wanders to the left and rolled away down the slope. He needs a decent up and down to save par...
  • 15:12
Very, very sound chip from Wee Mac. Absolutely pin high and six inches away.
  • 15:14
Rory's dad's bet was apparently £100 at 500-1 that he would be British Open champion before the age of 26...
  • 15:17
Another split fairway on the fourth hole from Rory. Seems now that its processional as Rory is showing no sign of cracking. The first par 5 hole is the 528 yard fifth.
  • 15:19
McIlroy hits it right at the flag and stops it. Another birdie putt for the leader on the fourth hole.

  • 15:35
252 yards out but Rory hits it thin and the ball plummets into the grandstand covers at 5. He'll probably get a free drop there if he's close enough...
  • 15:40
Rory gets his free drop but it's from the rough....he hits way long and the ball rolls off the back of the green. It's his first loose hole and his chipping will be tested again...
  • 15:46
Rory's chip attempt lands way short. He misses the putt for his first 6 at the par fives of the week. He started at six shots ahead. Now after five holes played his lead is down to 4 shots with Sergio applying the pressure with three birdies thru 6 for a -12.
  • 15:48

  • 15:52
It's a better chip from Rory. But he has left himself six feet. It's a big putt for the wee man so early in his round...But he'll get a read from Fowler before him...

  • 16:20

There's a touch of the nerves but Rory has hit the 9th green and he's a 15 footer for birdie. He's still three shots ahead of Sergio on -12,
  • 16:23
"Was nice out there I played pretty much flawless today. I warned up poor this morning. I left the range in anger because I hadn't hit a good shot.... 65 on the Sunday of a major gives me great satisfaction..." Shane Lowry
  • 16:25
Did he ever need that putt to drop on the 9th. Huge applause as Wee Mac's ball tracks from over 15 feet and disappears. Just when he needed it. It was steaming down and would have gone four feet past had it missed.
    4 shot lead
    9 holes to play.
  • 16:28
Just another word on Lowry's card. He had 7 birdies and not a bogey to be seen. Four of the brdies can on the back nine. Wonderful round...
