Afternoon and welcome to day 13 of the 2014 World Cup.

The second round ties are starting to take shape, victories for Brazil and the Netherlands mean they avoid each other but set up games against Chile and Mexico.

Colombia have the chance to top Group C tonight, while Japan, Greece and the Ivory Coast battle for second spot.

    But first, Group D.

Football's not coming home, but the footballers are. England face Costa Rica for little more then three points and the chance to salvage some pride from a miserable campaign. Costa Rica are through, but a point will see them top the group - they were 50/1 to do so at the start of the tournament.

I'll be taking you through England's final act in Belo Horizonte, while Carl O'Malley is covering the big one.

Italy's slightly superior goal difference means a point will see them through to the next round, Uruguay need all three.

Luis Suarez is starting, and the Azzurri will be hoping his attentions are still turned to those big meanies in the English media rather than the task in hand in Natal.

Patrick Madden Teams are in the tunnel in Belo Horizonte, time for Roy's boys to salvage some pride.

    Carl O'Malley

Apologies for the tardiness, I was out lumping a monkey on Colombia.*

That's quite enough of the Lightning Seeds, thank you, the anglicisation of this liveblog stops here.

It's debatable whether we should be even be covering that game but by virtue of my colleague's loose affiliation with Queen and Country, we'll tolerate it.

*I have no idea what that means.

  • 16:58
Patrick Madden Roy shakes his head as the rendition of God Save the Queen, like England, is terribly out of sync.
  • 16:59
  • 17:00
Patrick Madden Costa Rica get us started in the Estadio Mineirao.
  • 17:00
Carl O'Malley In contrast, there were two extraordinary renditions in Natala.

It's quare tense ahead of kick-off, Italy can afford a draw, Uruguay need to win.

    The Azzurri get us underway.
  • 17:03
    Patrick Madden

Early sighter from Joel Campbell comes off Gary Cahill's backside and wide of Foster's post but the ref gives a goalkick.

My player of the tournament so far, Campbell.

  • 17:04
Carl O'Malley Balotelli muscled out of it Arevalo and Rodrigu, the Italian striker looks troubled.
  • 17:04
  • 17:04
  • 17:07
Carl O'Malley Suarez is wincing now after getting in ahead of Chiellini to shield the ball and going down under the challenge.

He's then taken out again, this time by Barzagli, but  of course Jim Beglin et al reckon the victim is the guilty party, despite at least one, cynical foul.
  • 17:08
Patrick Madden Phil Jones gives away a free kick for a high foot on Diaz, despite winning the ball. Foster claims the delivery and England break at lightning pace through Shaw who feeds Barkley and wins a throw near the corner flag. Sharp.
  • 17:09
Carl O'Malley Buffon fists a Suarez free clear but it's up in the air and a scramble ensues that results in Chiellini clutching his face and screaming for retribution after Gonzalez caught him with his forearm.
  • 17:10
Patrick Madden Bryan Ruiz plays a cute ball to slip in Brenes but luckily for England the flag is up.
  • 17:11
Carl O'Malley 11 min:  Balotelli fouled by Lodeiro, free in for Italy
  • 17:12
Carl O'Malley Pirlo strikes it from distance, a la that late free against England that hit the crossbar, but Muslera watches it all the way and palms it over the bar. Lovely strike, corner Italy.
  • 17:12
Patrick Madden CLOSE! Wilshere squares it to Sturridge on the edge, he curls one with his left foot just past the up right.
  • 17:13
Carl O'Malley Italy concede a free after a high foot from Marchisio
  • 17:16
Carl O'Malley It's all a bit stop-start in Natala, as the camerman/producer get so desperate for something to focus on they pick out Fifa president Sepp Blatter in the crowd.
  • 17:17
  • 17:18
    Patrick Madden

It's quiet in Belo Horizonte too. Costa Rica happy to keep the ball and make England do the running, knowing a point will see them top.

There's a sentence I didn't think I'd be typing this time last week.

  • 17:18
Carl O'Malley Every time Jim Beglin says Chiellini, I'm momentarily duped into thinking Cian Healy is playing. Imagine the damage that fella would do on that pitch.
  • 17:19
  • 17:20
Carl O'Malley Cavani connects at the nearpost after a cross from Pereira but he had little chance of creating anything there and his control lets him down.
  • 17:20
Patrick Madden Good through ball from Milner and Sturridge is going to be on the end of it but Gonzalez just intercepts.
  • 17:24
Carl O'Malley Caceres gets a bang on the coccyx from Balotelli, awful painful that, then the Italian clatters into Pereira as he leps for a header and is deservedly yellow carded. He'll miss the next game. He's not the brightest.
  • 17:24
    Patrick Madden

Campbell drives forward with three white shirts around him and he's clipped by Adam Lallana.

CLOSE! Outstanding effort from Borges. Foster does brilliantly to tip it onto the crossbar and out for a corner. England clear but Barkley loses the ball and it'a a second Costa Rican corner.

Brenes takes but Foster claims well.

  • 17:24
  • 17:25
Patrick Madden England are nearly in. Lampard releases Lallana, the ball bobbles and is across the box but Wilshere can't quite reach it.
  • 17:28
Carl O'Malley 25 min:  Pirlo and Caceres have a bit of a disagreement before Balotelli breaks but shoots well wide
  • 17:28
Patrick Madden Chance for England! Barkley evades challenges on the edge of the box and plays it to Milner. His cross drops for Sturridge and it's a heavy challenge but no sniff of a penalty.
  • 17:29
Carl O'Malley Veratti showing some sublime touches in midfield for Italy, skipping around tackles with ease.

Immobile volleys over the crossbar after a cross from the left by De Sciglio.
  • 17:30
Carl O'Malley Veratti is then on hand to cover his own full-back in the corner and dispossess Suarez before calmly playing it out from the back.
  • 17:31
Patrick Madden Half an hour gone and it's 0-0.
  • 17:31
  • 17:34
Carl O'Malley Veratti lets Rodriguez get away from him and Lodeiro takes over to link up with Suarez, who gets through on Buffon, only to be denied as the 'keeper gets a hand his cross/shot before getting up to deny Lodeiro as well.
  • 17:34
    Patrick Madden

Corner for England, it's a scrum in the middle and Miller concedes another on the opposite side.

CLOSE! Barkley's corner is deep, Phil Jones leaps well to head it back across but Sturridge heads over.

  • 17:37
  • 17:37
Patrick Madden Great ball through from Barkley but it's just too far ahead of Wilshere and Navas smothers.
  • 17:37
Carl O'Malley That's an insult to hideously ugly freaks.
  • 17:39
Carl O'Malley Not for the first time, Caceres tries a 70-yard lob on Buffon, the first time the 'keeper gathered it, the second flew well wide.
  • 17:39
  • 17:41
Carl O'Malley Godin times a tackle on Immobile to perfection, renders his opponent distinctly immobile
  • 17:43
Patrick Madden Good play from England. Shaw gives it to Wilshere who turns sharply and plays it to Barkley. The Everton youngster plays it wide to Sturridge and gets the return ball, taking it wide of the Costa Rica defence but slicing his shot.
  • 17:44
    Patrick Madden

Another free kick for Costa Rica in a similar spot to Borges' earlier effort which rattled the bar.

It's floated in by Brenes at the back post this time but he's ruled offside.

  • 17:46
Patrick Madden Chance for Costa Rica on the stroke of half time after a long ball catches the England back four out and finds Brenes, but his shot is half blocked and loops into the grateful hands of Foster.
  • 17:46
Carl O'Malley Balotelli seems to intentionally handle the ball while control a ball in. For a man on a yellow card that was incredibly reckless.

That came after Suarez got a clout on the snout from Pirlo; the Uruguayan looking on disbelief afterwards, incredulous
  • 17:46
Patrick Madden HALF TIME: COSTA RICA 0 ENGLAND 0
  • 17:46
Carl O'Malley Suarez free in, headed out for a corner. The striker to take this one before the break.
  • 17:47
Carl O'Malley IT's a free out, as Chiellini hits the deck again, Cavani the accused after a bit of argy bargy.

    Tedious rubbish.
  • 17:48
Carl O'Malley That's halftime and it's Uruguay 0-0 Italy in Natala
  • 17:49
    Patrick Madden

Not really sure what to make of that half.

England have had the better openings but Costa Rica have seemed relatively comfortable. Campbell and co will be happy, as it stands they're through as group winners.

  • 18:02
  • 18:02
  • 18:03
Patrick Madden The players are back out in Belo Horizonte, and England get the second half started.
  • 18:04
Carl O'Malley The ineffective and generally irritating Balotelli has been taken off for  Marco Parolo of Parma, meaning Immobile might play through the middle from now on.
  • 18:07
Carl O'Malley Uruguay's Lodeiro off for Maxi Pereira too, which is a little odd considering Lodeiro has been one of the few positives for Uruguay so far in the tournament.

  • 18:08
Carl O'Malley Similarly cynical pattern to this half already and Caceres takes a bang on the noggin and will receive treatment.
  • 18:08
  • 18:08
Patrick Madden Lively start to the second half from England. Navas comes out to smother the ball at the feet of Sturridge and takes a boot to the inner thigh. He receives treatment but is back up gingerley.
  • 18:10
Carl O'Malley Cavani disgusted he didn't get something after Bonucci man handles him to the ground in the box. He was looking for it though, rarely see those given.

  • 18:11
    Patrick Madden

Milner plays a reverse ball over the top and Lallana gets to it at the byline, his cut back is just behind Lampard and Sturridge.

  • 18:11
Carl O'Malley Rodriguez caught by Marchisio, Suarez takes the free but it;s very poor and fails to trouble Buffon before landing deep in the crowd
  • 18:14
Patrick Madden Yellow card for Ross Barkley for tugging back Gamboa.
  • 18:15
Patrick Madden And another England booking after Lallana slides in late on Ruiz.
  • 18:15
Carl O'Malley 56 min: Still scoreless in Natal and it doesn't look like changing any time soon which suits Italy down the ground.
  • 18:17
Patrick Madden Shaw plays a brilliant ball down the side for Lallana, who's in behind and his ball across the six yard box is seized upon sharply by Navas with Daniel Sturridge waiting for the tap-in.
  • 18:17
Carl O'Malley Best chance of the game for Rodriguez!! He plays a one two with Suarez who lifts it over the Italian defence to find his team-mate but the midfielder volleys wide.
  • 18:17
Patrick Madden Costa Rican sub, Bolanos on for Brenes.
  • 18:18
    Carl O'Malley RED CARD!!

Claudio Marchisio sent off for Italy
  • 18:18
  • 18:18
  • 18:18
    Patrick Madden

Gonzalez takes out Ross Barkley on the edge of the box and is booked.

Lampard to take, his effort is drilled into the bottom of the wall.

  • 18:19
Patrick Madden Sterling on, Lallana off.
  • 18:19
Carl O'Malley The midfielder lost the ball ahead of him slightly and went in high on Arevalo. You've seen them given, but it wasn't nailed on. Still, advantage Uruguay.
  • 18:20
Patrick Madden Sharp strike from Bolanos but Foster catches well.
  • 18:21
Carl O'Malley On the replay, it's clear Marchisio was pretty reckless and may have even given a little extra kick out after initial contact was made. Fair decision.
  • 18:22
Carl O'Malley Attacking midfielder Stuani on now instead of Alvaro Pereira
  • 18:23
Patrick Madden CLOSE! Brilliant play from England, Sturridge plays a one two with Wilshere and he's through, but his curling effort is beyond Navas' far post. Should have scored.
  • 18:24
Carl O'Malley Even Pirlo's rattled now but he recovers from a sloppy pass out of play to find Immobile over the top with a lovely ball, then he has a go himself after following up the play but it's well over.
  • 18:25
Carl O'Malley Suarez denied by Buffon, a little toe poke beaten away after Cavani's effort was blocked and rolled into his strike partner's path.
  • 18:27
Carl O'Malley 67 min:  Pirlo's ball to Immobile is dangerous but Gimenez (19) gets across to concede the corner as the striker winds up for a shot.
  • 18:28
    Patrick Madden

Sturridge bursts into the box and goes down, the ref gives a corner kick. That was a dive from the England centre-forward.

Barkley's delivery is punched by Navas and Costa Rica break at pace winning a corner up the other end.

  • 18:29
Patrick Madden 20 to go in Belo Horizonte, still nothing doing.
  • 18:30
Carl O'Malley Immobile now making way for Antonio Cassano
  • 18:30
Patrick Madden Jack Wilshere is off, replaced by Gerrard.
  • 18:31
Carl O'Malley Italy "sitting like a caged lion waiting to pounce", according to Stephen Alkin. They may have just introduced the lion, with Cassano, the alpha male, strutting around up top now.
  • 18:32
Carl O'Malley Verratti down now with cramp, apparently, but the Uruguayans are incensed the referee stopped play for that.
  • 18:33
    Patrick Madden

Sturridge plays the ball round the corner and Sturridge chases after it, winning a corner.

Gerrard's ball is deep and onto the head of Lampard at the back post but it's well wide.

  • 18:34
Patrick Madden Milner off, Wayne Rooney on.
  • 18:34
Carl O'Malley Brazilian-born Thiago Motta coming on for Italy, replacing Verratti, who was looking increasingly isolated after a series of knocks.
  • 18:35
Carl O'Malley 14 minutes left  and it looks like it will be backs against forwards for the remainder. Comfort zone for the Azzurri?
  • 18:36
Patrick Madden Final swap for Costa Rica, Borges off replaced by Barrantes.
  • 18:36
Carl O'Malley De Sciglio carded for a block on M Pereira, as Rodriguez makes way for Sotuhampton's Gaston Ramirez.
  • 18:36
  • 18:37
Carl O'Malley Muslera gathers ahead of Parolo on a rare Italian foray forward.
  • 18:38
Patrick Madden CLOSE! Great effort from Rooney, he chests down a long ball and shapes to leather it on the half volley but takes a touch and tries to dink Navas who claws it out from under the bar.
  • 18:39
Carl O'Malley Suarez and Chiellini down on the deck and it look awfully suspect from Suarez, who leaned his head in on the Italian's shoulder and the defender lashed out at the Uruguayan.
  • 18:40
Carl O'Malley Chiellini run around showing anyone who will look that there are 'teeth marks' on his shoulder. Bizarre.
  • 18:40
    Carl O'Malley GOAL URUGUAY!!!
  • 18:41
Carl O'Malley Big goal-getter Godin climbs highest at the backpost and powers a header past Buffon. Italy could be going home, with a bad taste in their mouths.
  • 18:42
  • 18:43
Patrick Madden The goings on here pail into insignificance compared to the madness in Natal, but we're still playing and it's still zip all.
  • 18:43
Carl O'Malley That Godin header came off his shoulder.

Free in for Italy, Pirlo takes and it clips the wall and scoots wide from distance.
  • 18:44
Patrick Madden This is just like England's 0-0 draw with Egypt in Mike Bassett.
  • 18:45
  • 18:46
Patrick Madden Gerrard swings in a free kick and it's just beyond Rooney at the far post.
  • 18:47
Carl O'Malley Three minutes left now, controversy abounds in Natal. There's nothing conclusive about that 'bite' clip but if there's a mark on Chiellini, Suarez might need some medical intervention.
  • 18:48
Carl O'Malley Bonucci denies Suarez and the attacker tries again but he can't get it to the support inside the box, who throw their heads back in frustration.
  • 18:48
  • 18:49
Patrick Madden Three added minutes to be played before England's World Cup comes to an end.
  • 18:49
Carl O'Malley 5 minutes added on in Natal
  • 18:50
Patrick Madden Urena dashes forward and it's a straight footrace with Luke Shaw, the 18-year-old does brilliantly and forces it for a goal kick.
  • 18:51
Carl O'Malley Gimenez clears after some lovely approach play by Pirlo and Italy. Uruguay playjng keep ball now.
  • 18:51
    Patrick Madden

FULL TIME: COSTA RICA 0 ENGLAND 0

    COSTA RICA TOP GROUP D.

  • 18:51
  • 18:52
Carl O'Malley Arevalo strolls into the Italian box but he trips over his feet. He's not built for that.
  • 18:53
  • 18:54
Carl O'Malley Last gasp free in for Italy here. Buffon up for the late free.
  • 18:54
    Carl O'Malley

Pirlo's ball is too deep and is comfortably headed clear.

  • 18:54
Carl O'Malley Time is up in Natal, but no whistle yet.
  • 18:55
    Carl O'Malley FT: Uruguay 1 Italy 0
  • 18:58
Carl O'Malley Italy are on their way home and Uruguay march on with the bit between to their teeth, apparently.

Marchisio red was crucial, things were comfortable for Italy before that but the red was fair enough.

    Suarez is crackers!

  • 18:59

Carl O'Malley In complimenting Uruguay, Liam Brady unfortunately goes for the "they are all hungry" description.

    Patrick Madden

An uninspiring end to an uninspiring tournament for England. For all the talk of trying to salvage pride and treat today as the first step on the road to Euro 2016, it was ultimately a dead rubber.

England had the best of things without ever troubling Navas too much. Costa Rica will be very happy - top of the group they were destined to be the whipping boys of - and can look forward to a winnable game against Ivory Coast, Greece or Japan.

    For England, it's hometime.

Four more years lads, four more years.

  • 19:03
Carl O'Malley Brady and Dunphy can't see retrospective action being taken against Suarez if he is found to have bitten Chiellini, taking into account the decision of the authorities not to sanction Spain's Diego Costa for his 'headbutt' on Dutch defender Matrins Indi.

To top off another thoroughly miserable day for English sport Sri Lanka have just beaten England at Headingley with the penultimate ball of the match.

If there's one consolation, we'd probably beat Sri Lanka at football - and Costa Rica in the cricket.

    Right, Group C. It's complicated.

Colombia are through, and unless the Ivory Coast hammer Greece they'll come top.

A point is enough for the Ivory Coast providing Japan don't beat Colombia by two or more.

If Greece win they're through as long as Colombia don't lose to Japan.

Japan need to win and hope for a Greece victory against the Ivory Coast.

Everybody with me? Didn't think so.

  • 20:18
Patrick Madden One thing is clear, however - the class of Colombia so far in the tournament. Carl O'Malley will be talking you through the brilliance of James Rodriguez and co, and I'll keep you updated on the belligerent Greeks in Fortazela.
  • 20:35
Simon Check your facts on group C. Colombia are top. They have beaten Ivory Coast and even if they finish level on 6 points, Colombia will be top. Nothing Ivory Coast can do. A point will be enough for Ivory Coast to get second, regardless of Japan result.
  • 20:35
    Simon Disregard....you are correct sir!
  • 20:36
Patrick Madden Had me doubting myself for a second there Simon, cheers.

Carl O'Malley Howaya, Suarez-gate behind us now and I'm focusing on Colombia and Japan in Cuiaba.

Colombia have made a host (8) of changes here, safe in the knowledge that they are through. Just goalkeeper Ospina, midfielder Mejia and the very lively Cuadrado retained.

Toshiro Aoyama brought in for his first appearance of the tournament for Japan.

    Japan to get us underway.

  • 21:00
Patrick Madden Ivory Coast get us started at the Estadio Castelao.
  • 21:03
Carl O'Malley Bright start already from Colombia, with Quintero, who scored against Ivory Coast last week, looking bubbly behind Jackson Martinez.
  • 21:03
Patrick Madden Good play from Tiote who releases to Kalou. The ex-Chelsea man cuts inside and plays it back to Tiote but his cross curls beyond the back post and out of play.
  • 21:05
    Patrick Madden

Bamba is penalised for a high foot on Kone.

Drogba wins the header from the free kick and the ref blows for a free kick to the Ivory Coast after a push from Torosidis.

  • 21:06
Carl O'Malley Colombia look very well supported in Cuiaba, there's definitely a buzz around this 2014 team. It would be something special if they could go further than ever before (that would be 1/4 finals) on the 20th anniversary of the murder of former captain Andres Escobar.
  • 21:06
    Patrick Madden

Drogba rolls back the years with a surging, powerful run from deep.

And so does Gervinho, hopelessly miscontrolling his pass.

  • 21:06
Carl O'Malley But it's a free in for Japan now. Honda to take,
  • 21:07
Patrick Madden You're just saying that cause you've got them at 28/1...
  • 21:07
Carl O'Malley Honda's free is tame and clips the wall to be gathered by Ospina.
  • 21:07
Carl O'Malley Well, yes, there is that too. But I'm also saying it because I watched The Two Escobars while folding the laundry today.

It was a big pile of laundry.
  • 21:09
Patrick Madden Great break from Ivory Coast. Drogba and Gervinho combine again and Drogba releases his teammate but Manolas covers well to put it out for a corner.
  • 21:10
  • 21:10
Carl O'Malley Hesebe's ball for Okubu is a good one and the striker turns to shoot but his effort is blocked and cleared, only to come back to the frontman who this time shoots wildly wide.

Yaya Toure puts in a teasing cross and Karnezis gathers it with Drogba lurking.

Greece are up the other end and this time it's Barry who does well to smother the cross with Salpingdis running in.

  • 21:14
Carl O'Malley Japan getting a foothold here and looking dangerous at times, with Hasebe pulling the strings.

Kagawa, too, is lively and Uchida fires one narrowly wide after it took a deflection.
  • 21:14
Carl O'Malley Hasebe shoots straight at Ospina, nice strike but ambitious.
  • 21:15
Carl O'Malley Colombia a little flustered here, Quintero the latest to give the ball away cheaply.
  • 21:16
    Carl O'Malley Penalty Colombia!!!
  • 21:16
Patrick Madden Pressue from Greece after Bamba gives the ball away but Salpingdis' cross is beyond everyone.

Greece 'keeper Karnezis is down having treatment on his back. Disastrous start if they're forced into making another swap so soon.

News of a goal for Colombia is good for these two, though. Ivory Coast through as it stands.

Patrick Madden Karnezis is going to carry on.

Another free in for Japan after Okazaki fouled by Balanta. Honda stands over it again.
  • 21:22
  • 21:22
  • 21:23
Carl O'Malley Honda hits the wall again. Very similar angle to the last but no better result.
  • 21:23
Patrick Madden Chance for Ivory Coast. Yaya Toure shows his strength to burst through the middle and tries to slip in Drogba but his pass is too heavy and it's out for a goal kick.
  • 21:24
Patrick Madden And Greece are forced into the change, Karnezis decided he can't continue and he's replaced by sub 'keeper Glykos. Can't imagine he was expecting to get on tonight.
  • 21:24
Carl O'Malley Martinez goes down after a fine ball from deep but Konno's tackle is timely and fair, no claim from the Colombians. Crucial intervention.
  • 21:25
  • 21:26
Carl O'Malley Kagawa denied by Ospina after he latched on to Okubu's header and took it inside before shooting low to the keeper's nearpost. Good shot and save.

Nice setpiece almost causes Colombia problems but Ospina gathers.
  • 21:29
Carl O'Malley Brian Kerr reminiscing about pitting his wits against Jose Pekerman in Malaysia in 1997, when his Ireland under-20s were up against the likes of Pablo Aimar and Walter Samuel and beaten 1-0 by Argentina.
  • 21:30
    Carl O'Malley 30 minutes gone.
  • 21:31
Patrick Madden Not a lot of action in Fortazela so far. I fancy Costa Rica to do either of these in the next round.
  • 21:31
  • 21:32
Carl O'Malley Honda over another free kick, more central this time but wrong side for a left-footer.
  • 21:33
    Patrick Madden

Corner for the Ivory Coast after Boka's dangerous cross is cleared.

Yaya Toure's delivery is nodded clear.

Greece break and WOODWORK! Samaras bombs forward and plays in Holebas who sends it crashing off the bar.

  • 21:33
Carl O'Malley Oooooh, it's a lovely effort, just wide of the far post after getting up and down very nicely. Ospina may have had it covered though.
  • 21:34
Patrick Madden And now Greece have a free kick in a very dangerous spot on the edge of the box. Karagounis drills it low but it's straight at Barry who swallows it up comfortably.
  • 21:34
  • 21:37
Patrick Madden Harsh yellow card for Drogba after he slides in and wins the ball off Samaris.
  • 21:38
Carl O'Malley Okubu's bicycle kick at the backpost is a great effort after Uchida's cross but it's over the bar. Nice action.

Martinez at the other end ignores the support on his right and attempts a shot, which is blocked and Quintero's follow up shot scutters well wide.
  • 21:40
Carl O'Malley Okubu shuffles in from the left and beats one or two before it breaks for Kagawa, whose shot takes a nick off Balanta and goes over. Nothing comes of the corner. 40 minutes gone
  • 21:41
    Patrick Madden

Gervinho drives towards the box and plays it to Kalou's feet on the edge but his backheel can't find Gervinho.

Great feet from Kalou on the edge of the box, twisting and turning his man but his cross is well cleared.

  • 21:42
    Patrick Madden GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!
  • 21:42
Patrick Madden GREECE 1 IVORY COAST 0
  • 21:43
Carl O'Malley Martinez scuffs one badly wide after Arias robs possession and feeds Cuadrado whose ball is perfect for the striker on the edge of the box. The finish was very poor and bobbled harmlessly wide.
  • 21:43
Patrick Madden Greece get their first goal of the tournament. Tiote gives the ball away and Samaris pounces. He's through on goal and slots a lovely finish over Barry.
  • 21:44
Patrick Madden What's park the bus in Greek?
  • 21:45
Patrick Madden Ivory Coast almost get one back. Yaya Toure goes on one of his trademark runs, stepping past two but the ball gets stuck under his feet and his shot is blocked.
  • 21:45
Patrick Madden FOUR minutes of first half stoppage time.
  • 21:46
Carl O'Malley GOAL JAPAN!! GOAL Okazaki!!
  • 21:47
Carl O'Malley A lovely header on the stroke of halftime for Japan and Okazaki.
  • 21:47
    Carl O'Malley Παρκάρετε το λεωφορείο

    Park the bus in Greek
  • 21:49
Carl O'Malley No replay of that goal yet, so I can't describe any better than that at the moment because I was translating 'park the bus' to Greek. Or, at least, Google was.
  • 21:49
  • 21:49
Patrick Madden HALF TIME: GREECE 1 IVORY COAST 0
  • 21:51
  • 21:52
  • 21:53
Carl O'Malley Nailed on penalty for Colombia after Konno dived in on Ramos.

Okazaki's header a lovely glancing effort at the nearpost after Honda drifted down the right wing and cut inside on his left to .clip in a nice inviting cross. The least they deserved, really
  • 22:03
Carl O'Malley Haven't seen any of the other game but if this Ivory Coast team doesn't give it socks in the second half they're bowing out with an awful whimper.

They were really stung by their groups in 2006 and 2010 and this was the best chance for some great players to make the second round. Anything else an unmitigated failure.
  • 22:04
    Patrick Madden

Wonder what Greece's tactics will be here...

    They get us back underway.

  • 22:06
Carl O'Malley Back underway in Cuiaba.

    James Rodriguez on for Quintero

    Carlos Carbonero on for Cuadrado
  • 22:06
    Patrick Madden

Christodoulopoulos has an early shot which is deflected wide. I'm not typing his name again, he's number 16 from now on.

Corner for Greece on the far side but Drogba clears.

  • 22:06
Carl O'Malley Easy for you to say.
  • 22:08
Patrick Madden Yaya Toure carries and finds Gervinho, he plays it back to Tiote who hits it well but his shot is straight at Glykos.
  • 22:09
Carl O'Malley Carbonero on the ball a bit and fouled twice so far. Plays for River Plate in Argentina.

Rodriguez scampers at the Japanese defenec, acrosse the box a la Messi, and lets fly but his shot is deflected behind. Colombia look like they got a bit of a rocket off Pekerman.
  • 22:10
Patrick Madden Number 16's first name is Lazaros, which I can cope with, so I'll be using that from now on.
  • 22:13
Patrick Madden Close from Lazaros! He drives forward and feints to shoot but dummys, selling his man, but his effort with the outside of his right boot is just wide.
  • 22:13
Carl O'Malley Brian Kerr seemed like he was trailing off into some sort of a dreamland there when referring to Rodriguez's "sweet, sweer left foot".

He's not wrong though, lovely ball from the Monaco player  causes more problems but it's over the bar from a Colombian foot.
  • 22:14
    Carl O'Malley GOAL COLOMBIA!!!  Martinez!!
  • 22:15
Carl O'Malley Cracking run from Arias, feeds Rodriguez on the edge of the box, lovely touch and shimmy, and then a lay off for Martinez who shoots left-footed across Kawashima and into the bottom corner
  • 22:15
Patrick Madden Drogba plays in Kalou but Manolas is across with a fantastic covering challenge. Yaya Toure's corner is punched away by Glykos.
  • 22:17
    Carl O'Malley

    Can Japan respond?

Well they are trying, Hesebe feeds Kagawa on the edge of the box, he turns and shoots well over, but that was too easy.

  • 22:18
    Patrick Madden

Salpingidis hits a rasper form the edge but Barry is equal to it and tips it over.

The corner is headed away by Drogba AGAIN.

  • 22:19
Carl O'Malley Ospina in a muddle after Nagatomo's ball beats him and Okubu misses out at the backpost thanks to Armero's excellent header. Fine defending from him but goalkeeper Ospina did not inspire confidence.
  • 22:20
    Patrick Madden

Aurier with a dangerous ball but Maniatis clears it for a corner.

Wilfried Bony is coming on for Tiote.

  • 22:20
Carl O'Malley Okazaki goes down after getting caught in the mush by Balanta.

Brian Kerr says it wasn't deliberate, Okazaki was "kinda down on his hunkers"
  • 22:21
Carl O'Malley Yamaguchi on for Aoyama
  • 22:22
    Patrick Madden

Greece break at pace again and Lazarus plays in Torosidis on the far side, he checks back and is fouled by Kalou who is booked.

Free kick in a good spot for Greece. Karagounis absolutely leathers it but the wall does its job.

  • 22:22
Carl O'Malley Yellow card for Guarin after his tackle on Hasebe, I think. Looked a bit harsh, that. Honda over this one again, but it's a mile out.
  • 22:23
Carl O'Malley Great effort but Ospina could watch it all the way and fisted it out. Nice strike but the distance was always against him.
  • 22:25
Carl O'Malley 65 minutes gone now

Uchida's ball volleyed over the bar from Okubu. Has to score there.
  • 22:25
Patrick Madden Kalou curls it in towards Bony on the penalty spot but the Swansea striker's touch is poor and it skids past him into the corner.
  • 22:26
Carl O'Malley Okubu claims a peno but nobody's listening after Balanta's touch was clearly not enough to send the striker to the floor.
  • 22:26
Patrick Madden Kalou jinks inbetween Salpingdis and Torosidis and is into the box, but his curling effort is beyond the far post.
  • 22:27
Patrick Madden WOODWORK! Karagounis absolutely banjoes one from 30 yards and it crashes off Barry's bar.
  • 22:30
    Patrick Madden

Greece are terrorising the Ivory Coast on the break. Holebas carries from inside his own half and is dragged back by Serey Die who is shown a yellow card.

Karagounis is lining up another 30-yarder. But Lazarus takes and it dips onto the roof of the net. Effort.

  • 22:30
Carl O'Malley Japan fighting for their lives here but they one isn't enough at this stage, they need two.
  • 22:31
Carl O'Malley And Colombia are good on the counter
  • 22:31
    Patrick Madden

Great recovery tackle from Holebas concedes a corner.

Yaya Toure puts it in and Bamba gets free but can't steer his header inside the near post.

  • 22:32
Carl O'Malley As was the case here, when Jackson Martinez and James Rodriguez were both denied by blocks
  • 22:32
    Patrick Madden GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!!
  • 22:32
Patrick Madden GREECE 1 IVORY COAST 1
  • 22:33
Carl O'Malley Konno strikes a shot well but Ospina gathers it comfortably after some nice play from Japans.
  • 22:33
Patrick Madden Ivory Coast are back into second place. The ball is slipped into Gervnho into the channel and he squares to Bony for a simple finish.
  • 22:36
  • 22:36
Patrick Madden Karagounis, who won his 138th cap tonight, is off for Greece - Gekas the man on.
  • 22:36
Carl O'Malley Ospina again in the way as Nagatomo tests him after Kagawa's lay off, but the task just got a lot harder for Japan who are now bottom of Group C on one point. Now need more help from Greece as well as two goals.
  • 22:37
Patrick Madden As one national hero departs, so does another. Drogba comes off and is replaced by Diomande.
  • 22:38
Carl O'Malley Ramos butchers a counter for Colombia. Should have let Rodriguez in and when he didn't his pass cross field to Martinez was terrible and intercepted. Should have been three.
  • 22:39
    Carl O'Malley

    10 minutes go now.

  • 22:39
Patrick Madden Woodwork again! Torosidis gets his cross wrong and it crashes into Barry's nearpost, he was struggling there.
  • 22:39
Patrick Madden Last 10 here as well.
  • 22:40
Carl O'Malley GOAL COLOMBIA!!! GOAL MARTINEZ!
  • 22:41
Carl O'Malley What a goal on the counter. This time Rodriguez knows how to pick a pass, a little reverse number into Martinez on the counter, and the striker cuts inside his man and curls a left-footed finish into the far corner.
  • 22:42
Patrick Madden Final change for the Ivory Coast, Gervinho replaced by Sio.
  • 22:43
Carl O'Malley Nagatomo and Hasebe combine to send Kagawa in behind the defence but his shot is across the face of goal and there's nobody there to put it in the net.
  • 22:44
Carl O'Malley Sub:  Goalkeeper Ospina is replaced by Mondragon, who, at 43, becomes the oldest player to ever play in the World Cup.
  • 22:44
    Patrick Madden

Kalou bursts into the box and has three options but he's greedy and his shot is deflected for a corner.

Yaya Toure is in no hurry to get across to take it. It's swung to the back post and headed back across, Bamba heads it into the ground and it loops up for Glykos.

    Five minutes for Greece.

  • 22:44
Carl O'Malley "It's like one of those rugby internationals," squawks Brian Kerr.
  • 22:45
  • 22:46
Patrick Madden CLOSE! So near for Greece. Salpingdis gets in behind and squares but the ball somehow eludes two pairs of Ivory Coast legs when surely the slightest touch would have directed it in.
  • 22:47
Carl O'Malley Armero nutmegs a Japanese defender in the box but the ball is cleared before he can get a shot off. Arias fires high over the bar.
  • 22:48
  • 22:49
Carl O'Malley GOAL COLOMBIA: James Rodriguez scores a beauty.
  • 22:49
  • 22:50
Patrick Madden Greece have a free kick but the lofted ball is headed away. Ivory Coast break and it eventually falls for Yaya Toure but he can't engineer room for a shot.
  • 22:50
    Patrick Madden WOW WOW WOW
  • 22:50
    Patrick Madden PENALTY TO GREECE
  • 22:50
Carl O'Malley The Monaco man races on to a ball on the counter again, twists his man whose backpedalling desperately and when he's bamboozled, Rodriguez dinks it over the keeper with exquisite ease.
  • 22:51
Patrick Madden Samaras is about to pull the trigger but he's caught by Sio. Or was he? It's difficult to tell, but either way Samaras is stepping up to take the penno...
  • 22:51
    Patrick Madden GOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!
  • 22:52
    Patrick Madden

    SAMARASSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

  • 22:52
Patrick Madden GREECE 2 IVORY COAST 1
  • 22:53
Patrick Madden What a penalty, he hits it hard and to the 'keeper's left. Ecstasy for Greece, tragedy for Ivory Coast. That must be a sucker punch.
  • 22:53
Patrick Madden FULL TIME: GREECE 2 IVORY COAST 1
  • 22:54
Carl O'Malley Mondragon saves from Kakitani at the death in Cuiaba, where it's all over. Colombia very convincing in the end. They counter so well, and in James Rodriguez they have one of the players of the tournament. Fantastic operator, who'll be full of confidence after that performance off the bench. Two assists and a goal.
  • 22:55

    Patrick Madden

    Football, bloody hell.

The Ivory Coast had done it, they were there.

Greece are through to the knockout stages for the first time ever with pretty much the last kick of the game.

Stunning finish in a stunning World Cup.

  • 22:56
    Patrick Madden

Thanks for joining again today, cya tomorrow.
