13:23In a week of huge scientific discoveries we’ve got closer to the answers of some of life’s big questions - how did the world begin, where did we come from and what exactly is a Higgs Boson particle anyway?
One big imponderable however remains unanswerable – will we ever again live to see a year when Kilkenny will not be the All-Ireland hurling champions?
Unsurprisingly, Brian Cody’s charges find themselves in yet another Leinster hurling final. Galway are lined up to be their victims this year at Croke Park but is there a chance that the underdogs could shock the Cats? Ok, so probably not but that won’t stop us marvelling at one of the wonders of the Universe – this present bunch of Kilkenny hurlers.
Before that we’re in Limerick where Cork should overcome Clare in the Munster football final. Cork are many people’s favourites for Sam Maguire this year and it’s fair to say that Clare are most certainly not. There should be pride to play for but it’s likely that Clare will fall into the black hole that is the qualifiers by mid-afternoon. (It’s now very clear that my scientific knowledge is extremely limited).
Those of you out there who happen to be masochists will be pleased to hear that I’ll also keep you updated with the score in the Ulster hurling final. Antrim and Derry contest it but really the big question to be asked here is why do they bother?
The GAA’s mantra this year may be ‘Nothing beats being there’ and of course that’s entirely true if you happen to catch a classic. If, on the other hand you wake up on a day like today, pull back the curtains and see the grey abyss outside you might agree that there’s a lot to be said for a cup of tea, the telly and a dashing young (ish) man who goes by the name of Ciaran Daly making astute, erudite and definitely not juvenile comments on the Irish Times liveblog. Let the games and smart-arsed comments begin!

13:23Munster football championship final
Cork v Clare - 2pm (Gaelic Grounds, Limerick)
Ulster hurling championship final
Derry v Antrim - 3.30pm (Casement Park, Belfast)
Leinster hurling championship final
Kilkenny v Galway - 4pm (Croke Park, Dublin)
-
13:29Tipperary are Munster's minor champions. They have beaten Kerry on a score-line of 2-14 to 1-14
-
13:32TV3 have the coverage of the Munster final by the way. Matt Cooper won’t be able to hide his bias.
-
13:35Do Clare fans feel patronised by the coverage they’re receiving in relation to the final?
-
13:36The Clare players even sound resigned to defeat. They’re talking about it being a good day. They know they’re beaten don’t they?
-
13:39An ad for the GAA has just said- ‘It was brazilian hurling that day.’ Pele and the lads are renowned for their love of the GAA then?
-
13:42‘Ulster Bank, sponsors of the All-Ireland want to send you and your friend to the All-Ireland semi-final.’ Priorities anyone?
-
13:44Conor Counihan always says the right thing. I defy anyone not to be impressed by him. (I give it about 30 seconds before a Kerryman pipes up).
-
13:45Initial reports are that Cork start with the same team that began the Kerry game.
-
13:47Cork have so many big strong fellas. That’s an Irish sentence right there.
-
13:48The stadium announcer at the Gaelic Grounds sounds like he may be in some pain. Help him someone.
-
13:49I think one team today has to go out and play as if they haven’t a Clare in the world. That’s right, I went there - Clare-based puns.
-
13:55Two changes for Cork -Eoin Cotter and Fintan Goold start. Graham Canty and Paddy Kelly make way.
-
13:56Clare of course will look at this as a good weekend irrespective of the result today. Their hurlers saw off the Dubs by staging a late comeback yesterday. The final score was Clare 1-16 Dublin 0-16
-
13:58Nothing beats being there? The people of Munster beg to differ. A lot of empty seats in Limerick.
-
13:58This rendition of the National Anthem is eerie. That’s the only word for it.
-
14:00We’re off!
-
14:00
-
14:01Aidan Walsh scores. Cork 0-1 Clare 0-0
-
14:01The TV3 pundits were talking about how Aidan Walsh is a young inexperienced player. He’s a young inexperienced player with an All-Ireland medal. I’m sure most teams would kill for that kind of inexperience.
-
14:03Tubridy wide. This could be a long afternoon for Clare.
-
14:03
-
14:04Cork’s attack is so incisive.
-
14:05Clare should get off the mark here.
-
14:06
-
14:07Sheehan looks menacing already. In a sporting way of course. I'm sure he's an upstanding citizen
-
14:07
-
14:08Clare panic when they cross the half-way line.
-
14:09Cork had a goal chance but Donncha O’Connor’s chance was snuffed out by Gordon Kelly.
-
14:10Cork have dropped a couple of shots short. I’m not a psychologist but I’m going to go ahead and diagnose that as a case of complacency. What do you mean that's not a psychological condition?
-
14:12officialgaa via Twitter Electric Ireland Leinster GAA Minor Hurling Championship Final@13’: Wexford 0-4 Dublin 0-3. #gaa2012
-
14:12That was Clare’s best move of the game. Decent movement in the full forward line that time.
-
14:1313 mins – GOAL for Goold
-
14:13Great finish from the man who wasn’t even meant to start the match.
-
14:1414 mins – Cork 1-4 Clare 0-2. Colm O’Neill with the latest point
-
14:14
-
14:14
-
14:15
-
14:15Guest goal to who?
-
14:15Fintan Goold scored a great goal for Cork. Superb top-corner finish.
-
14:17
-
14:1716 mins - Clare threatened the Cork goal there. Tubridy was blocked from close range. They recycled the ball and got a point out of it. Cork lead 1-4 Clare 0-4
-
14:1818 mins – Colm O’Neill puts over another Cork point. Cork 1-5 Clare 0-4
-
14:18
-
14:20
-
14:21GOAL! Aidan Walsh scores Cork’s second goal. Good run and a neat finish. Cork 2-5 Clare 0-4
-
14:21Conal Ruddy A dashing young (ish) man in the style of Don Draper, Ciaran Daly.
-
14:21I certainly wouldn't disagree with that Conal.
-
14:22There is a definite feeling that Cork could score a lot of goals this afternoon. Every ball played into the full forward line creates panic in the Clare full-back line.
-
14:24Ciaran Sheehan has been the outstanding player of the first half. Cork have quality all over the pitch.
-
14:24Gary Brennan has won some fantastic balls in midfield for Clare.
-
14:25Eoin Cadogan with the most cynical of fouls as Rory Donnelly was driving through for a shot at goal. Cadogan gets booked accordingly.
-
14:26
-
14:2626 mins - Tubridy converts. It’s Cork 2-5 Clare 0-5
-
14:27When Clare get to the 65 metre line they only see a wall of red. They need to get the ball into the full forward line earlier.
-
14:28Gary Brennan with a great point. He has been Clare’s best player.
-
14:28
-
14:2828 mins - Cork 2-6 Clare 0-6
-
14:29Donncha O'Connor with the score
-
14:29
-
14:31GOAL! It’s number three for Cork. Nicholas Murphy palms it in from close range.
-
14:31Cork 3-6 Clare 0-6
-
14:32
-
14:32Suggestions that Murphy was in the small square before the ball was played.
-
14:3333 mins – Kerrigan gets in on the scoring act. Cork 3-7 Clare 0-6
-
14:34
-
14:34
-
14:34Michael O’Shea gets his third point for Clare. Cork 3-7 Clare 0-7
-
14:35officialgaa via Twitter Electric Ireland Leinster GAA Minor Hurling Championship Final@HT: Wexford 1-8 Dublin 1-8. #gaa2012
-
14:35Nicholas Murphy’s goal should definitely have been disallowed. Harsh on Clare but I don’t think realistically it changed the pattern of the game. Cork are clearly in the ascendency and Clare don’t look like they can catch them
-
14:36HT – Cork 3-7 Clare 0-7
-
14:36
-
14:40Clare have some decent players. Rory Donnelly, David Tubridy, Michael O’Shea and Gary Brennan have been competitive. Unfortunately for them, every single player on the Cork team is competitive. Kerrigan only began to get going at the end of the half. Before that, Sheehan had been excellent, Donncha O’Connor posed a threat and Fintan Goold popped up with a goal. And those are just Cork’s forwards. The second half could be painful viewing for Clare followers.
-
14:45The replay of Nicholas Murphy’s goal shows that the ball probably had already crossed the line before he got his palm to it. Given that Paul Kerrigan’s pass was a hand-pass the goal shouldn’t have counted. It was a square ball too. Two reasons it should not have been given. Even if they’d taken two goals off Cork I’d still fancy them to win it easily in the second half.
-
14:46The Ulster minor hurling final ends in a draw. Antrim 2-13 Down 2-13. Replay is next Saturday.
-
14:50Predictions for the second half? Can Cork hit six goals? Will Eoin Cadogan get sent off? Will I ever stop asking questions?
-
14:51The Cadogan foul was deeply cynical. He denied a goal-scoring opportunity knowing the worst punishment he would face would be a yellow card. That’s wrong surely?
-
14:53Darragh Ó’Sé is a great pundit who doesn’t try to sensationalise everything. He also happens to be a fine columnist for the nation’s finest paper. Check out Darragh’s latest column here - http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2012/0704/1224319340923.html

-
14:5838 mins - This could get ugly for Clare. Donncha O’Connor with the score. Cork 3-9 Clare 0-7
-
14:58
-
15:00Tuibridy points for Clare but there was a goal chance which Aidan Walsh blocked. It’s 3-9 to 0-8
-
15:00
-
15:03Colm O’Neill with a fine run. He blasted his shot at goal but it was blocked on the line.
-
15:04Cork look like they’re going to score a goal every time they attack.
-
15:05
-
15:05Michael O’Shea has four points to his name today. Really though Clare need goals.
-
15:0646 mins – Cork 3-9 Clare 0-9
-
15:07Rory Donnelly adds another for Clare. They’re beginning to play.
-
15:07
-
15:08Just when you think Cork are faltering they score. Colm O’Neill with Cork’s latest. It’s Cork 3-10 Clare 0-10
-
15:09The attendance today is 9,139. For a Munster final that’s terrible.
-
15:10I can’t remember a game with this many goal chances.
-
15:11O’Neill hit the post from the dead ball twice but scored eventually from play. 3-11 Clare 0-10
-
15:11
-
15:11Daniel Goulding on for Nicholas Murphy. Clare defenders must want to cry.
-
15:12
-
15:15I'm not saying this game is lacking in atmosphere but I'm just saying I've been to livelier funerals
-
15:15Kerrigan hits back for Cork. 3-12 to 0-11 they lead.
-
15:15officialgaa via Twitter Electric Ireland Leinster GAA Minor Hurling Championship Final@FT: Wexford 1-14 Dublin 2-15. #gaa2012
-
15:16Gary Brennan hits a point in reply for Clare but they aren’t posing any goal-threat.
-
15:16
-
15:17Daniel Goulding is on and he’s on the scoreboard now.
-
15:18David Russell is on. He looks like Ravanelli. Let’s hope for Clare’s sake that he has his goal-scoring abilities.
-
15:1959 mins - Rory Donnelly slots over his third point of the day. Cork 3-13 Clare 0-13
-
15:21Why did only 9,139 people go to the Munster final today? Was it because the match is a foregone conclusion, the weather, the price, the Wimbledon final or all of the above?
-
15:21
-
15:2161 mins - Ciarán Sheehan has been excellent for Cork. Another fine point. Cork 3-14 Clare 0-13
-
15:2363 mins – Cork 3-15 Clare 0-13. This is painful.
-
15:24If the referee adds more than one minute onto the end of this match then we know he has no soul.
-
15:27Clare should have scored a goal after Alan Quirke came out of his goal but alas they couldn’t even force the pity goal
-
15:28Man of the match – it has to be Ciarán Sheehan surely.
-
15:28It’s official – Ciarán Sheehan is man of the match.
-
15:29Conal Ruddy The Cork keeper needs to tell the ref to stop this, ref respect for the opponent.
-
15:29Don’t know if there’s any fellas called Iker down in Cork
-
15:3070 mins - Cork sub Barry O’Driscoll gets in on the scoring act. Cork 3-16 Clare 0-13
-
15:30
-
15:30Three minutes of additional time. The ref is clearly a robot.
-
15:31Conal Ruddy Nor anybody who can speak English as well as Iker.
-
15:31I wouldn’t go booking any holidays in Cork anytime soon Conal with that fighting talk.
-
15:32Full-time 3-16 Clare 0-13
-
15:33
-
15:34Conal Ruddy Good job I'm not tweeting these.
-
15:35
-
15:37Underwhelming final. Cork did what they needed. Very professional (yet amateur) performance. Clare are a spirited team with limitations. They play in Division Four. Cork are Division One champions. It was always going to be straightforward.

-
15:47Galwegians – tell us how your team are going to beat Kilkenny? (Hint – they aren’t but I want to hear your false hope)
-
15:52Alex Ferguson must know his best manager in the world title is under threat – Brian Cody’s got your number Sir Alex
-
15:53Joe Canning needs a big game today.
-
15:54Iarla Tannian is a player too as is Tony Óg Regan but will it be enough to be competitive?
-
15:56The panel on RTÉ are discussing Richie Doyle – he’s 20 years old. Will this conveyor belt of talent ever end in Kilkenny?
-
15:58officialgaa via Twitter Ulster GAA Hurling Championship Final@25': Antrim 1-6 Derry 0-4. #gaa2012
-
15:58“A goal is worth more than a goal in championship hurling.” – Liam Sheedy. Taken in isolation you’d say he’s crazy but he was speaking in terms of the psychological effect Kilkenny goals have on opponents. Liam stopped Kilkenny’s drive for five. He knows his onions surely.

-
16:03Canning fielded a great ball and buried the ball. A superb start for Galway. Can only be good for the game.

16:07I always baulk when I hear words like ‘intensity’ and ‘passion’ being used to form part of a game-plan. How come tactics never seem to come into it?
-
16:09There are almost 10 minutes gone and Kilkenny haven’t scored. Am I dreaming?
-
16:11Galway have been excellent. Kilkenny have been alright but Galway are just first to everything. Surely they can’t keep this up?

-
16:37Galway fully deserving of their lead. Physically imposing, tactically astute and unbelievably accurate with their shooting. Kilkenny are rattled.
-
16:39If Kilkenny had gotten a goal before the break the tide would’ve arguably turned. As it is though Galway are comfortable. Expect a Kilkenny onslaught but can they turn this deficit around? I’d be inclined to think not.

16:40Canning, Burke and Donnellan have been unbelievably good in the first half.
-
16:41The danger for Galway is that they will be unable to sustain that pace for the second half.
-
16:42Kudos too to the Galway defence. When a long ball comes in there are two Galway men on the lone full-forward.
-
16:46On sporting occasions like this I want to run through the streets at half-time telling people to get to the nearest tv. People missing this will kick themselves. What say you for the second half?

16:57A point from play from Michael Rice. That’s only Kilkenny’s second from play all day. Galway 2-13 Kilkenny 0-6
-
16:58Joe Canning was lax there. He tried to pass to create a goal-chance. The point was on. Misses like that will give Kilkenny confidence.

17:19Eight points down, six minutes left. Can Kilkenny pull off the most dramatic comeback in recent history?
-
17:19Jack You're right; I'm glad I stuck with this rather than the tennis. John McIntyre might be wondering how he couldn't get Galway to play like this.
-
17:20Whatever the result, Galway have been fantastic and Anthony Cunningham deserves a lot of credit. Tiredness becoming a real issue for Galway now though.
-
17:21POD Pity the guy sitting in a hotel in Hong Kong watching it on here at 12:20am with no TV coverage!

17:22Well, I hope you’re getting a feel for some of the drama. It’s not often I’ll pity someone in Hong Kong!

17:30I predict a story in the papers about a Galway lad who put €100 on Galway to win by 10 points. Then again, I predicted an easy Kilkenny win. What do I know?

18:02When you woke up this morning you might have thought this was just an ordinary day. Well, don’t you feel foolish now because we have witnessed a defining moment in GAA history. Connacht’s Galway are Leinster champions after comprehensively defeating Kilkenny, arguably the greatest team in the history of the game in front of 22, 171 people at Croke Park.
Galway won by 10 points in the end but led by 14 points at half-time. At that stage Kilkenny had only scored four points, only one of which was from play and the Cats were kept scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game.
Galway were able to ride out the second-half onslaught so that when Richie Hogan and Henry Shefflin netted for the Cats the Westerners still held a comfortable lead.
Galway are Leinster champions for the first time and they deserve to be. You just have to pity the team who draw Kilkenny in the qualifiers now.
Earlier in the day Cork strolled to the Munster football title with a facile win over Clare. Three first half goals from Fintan Goold, Aidan Walsh and Nicholas Murphy proved to be the difference and Clare never really threatened in the first half.
Naturally, the big draw of the day was the Ulster hurling final which Antrim won on a score-line of 3-18 to 0-8.
And now, I’m drained but I’ll be ready for more of the best GAA action again next week. You will be too. Join me here again then. Gaillimh abú!
