  • Good evening and welcome to live coverage of the crunch Group C encounter between the Republic of Ireland and Austria. My name is Emmet Riordan and I will keep you up to date with all the action at the Aviva Stadium on this brutally cold March evening.

Both teams are equal on seven points in the table, with Austria sitting in third place above Giovanni Trapattoni’s side due to a superior goal difference. They certainly boosted that in their last outing, by hammering the Faroe Islands 6-0 in Vienna last Friday night, although if you look at the video of the goals, there was some rank bad defending and a goalkeeper who had an off day to be kind to him.

  • The real danger looks like a midfield that can all score goals with Bayern Munich’s David Alaba and Werder Bremen’s Zlatko Junuzovic both showing fine technique at the edge of the box.

It’s the first meeting between the sides in a World Cup qualifier and the first since losing both European Championship qualifiers 3-1 in the run-up to Euro 96 in England.

The magic mullet of Toni Polster inspired them to victory at Lansdowne Road that day, although this video shows that there was a number of dodgy barnets on show at the old ground that day.
  • Robbie Keane may not be playing, although he’s at the Aviva alongside his second cousin Morrissey, the pride of Crumlin.
  • Mozza is bound to be cheered up by the news that Marc Wilson has passed a late fitness test on his groin and will start at left back.

Republic of Ireland: David Forde (Millwall); Seamus Coleman (Everton), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Ciaran Clark (Aston Villa), Marc Wilson (Stoke City); Jonathan Walters (Stoke City), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), James McCarthy (Wigan athletic), James McClean (Sunderland); Shane Long (West Brom), Conor Sammon (Derby County).

    Austria: Heinz Lindner (Austria Vienna ); Gyorgy Garics (Bolonga), Alekandar Dragovic (Basel), Emauel Pogatetz (West Ham), Christian Fuchs (Schalke 04); David Alaba (Bayern Munich ), Veli Kavlak (Besiktas); Marko Arnautovic (Werder Bremen), Zlatko Junuzovic (Werder Bremen), Andreas Ivanschitz (Mainz);
    Philipp Hosiner (Austria Vienna).
  • Hosiner gets the nod to start after scoring his first two international goals in the victory over the Faroes. It means that 6ft 5in Trabzonspor striker Mark Janko.
  • Nothing more than a journeyman is Eamon Dunphy's decision on Conor Sammon, saying he's not up to this level.
  • A 4-2-3-1 formation for the Austrians, with Hosiner up front on his own, with Junuzovic just behind. Martin Harnik is actually on the right wing, with Andreas Ivanschitz named on the bench.

Austria: Heinz Lindner (Austria Vienna); Gyorgy Garics (Bolonga), Alekandar Dragovic (Basel), Emauel Pogatetz (West Ham), Christian Fuchs (Schalke 04); David Alaba (Bayern Munich), Veli Kavlak (Besiktas); Martin Harnik
(Stuttgart), Marko Arnautovic (Werder Bremen), Zlatko Junuzovic (Werder Bremen); Philipp Hosiner (Austria Vienna).
  • RTÉ showing a cracking highlights reel from previous games between the sides, inclding Dunphy crossing (well the ball made it in to the box) for the great Alfie Hale to score.
  • "It may be a stuttering disjointed performance, but with a win," is Liam Brady's take, which is much more upbeat that Eamo before the kick-off.
  • Germany host Kazakhstan in tonight's other Group C game and yet again Joachim Loew hasn't named an out and out striker, just a shed load of attacking midfielders.
  • Johnny Giles hopes Sammon scores a hat-trick but also believes it will be scrappy.
  • A lot of empty spaces at the Aviva as the teams take the pitch.
  • You can send me your predictions through the comment button or tweet me @emmetrd
  • President Higgins has a special word for former Galway United goalkeeper David Forde. Of course, Michael D was president of the club in the not too distant past.
  • The Arranmore Pipe Band from Donegal give a rousing rendition of Amhrán na bhFiannand we're almost ready to start at the Aviva.
  • But before we start, we'll have a tribute to the late Con Martin, who captained both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

  • Austria kick off at the Aviva.
  • 1 min: Whelan gives the ball away in midfield and then fouls, free-kick to Austria.
  • 2 mins: Alaba's effort swirls on the wind and causes a slight problem for Forde.
  • AidanCostaRica A lot of empty seats, says a lot!
  • 3 mins: Austria winning the key battles in midfield in the early stages.
  • Sammon is fouled by Kavlak and free to Ireland, but in their own half. No card.
  • 5 mins: Shane Long  given offiside, but it's a poor decision.
  • Nice work from McClean on the left, but his shot is blocked and Austria clear.

  • Sammon wins a corner at the back post from Marc Wilson's cross.
  • Free out as Walters catches Fuchs in the mouth from the corner.
  • AidanCostaRica There was something on there but McCarthy chose to play a ball over the top when he would have been better pushing on and drawing defenders before releasing a pass
  • 11 mins: GOAL - AUSTRIA: Harnik scores after Ciaran Clark is robbedof the ball .
  • That was poor from the young Aston Villa defender and Austria made Ireland pay a harsh price. Harnik makes a vital contribution after being brought in for this game.
  • 13 mins: McCarthy's pass is too far for McCleanand Austria attack again.
  • This time Clark gets his clearance in.
  • 15 mins: McClean looks for the free-kick but it's only a throw in the end.
  • McCarthy winning some good challenges in midfield now.
  • 17 mins: Call for a hand ball against Alaba but the ref lets play go on.
  • A lot of fouls in the middle of the park, scrappy like the Aviva Stadium surface.
  • Long thought he had a corner, but assistant referee gives the kick out.

  • Austria happy to play keep ball and McCarthy fouls. Lucky not to get a yellow card there.
  • Studs were up but he got the ball. yellow would put McCarthy out of game against Faroes in June.
  • The referee now books him and he's out of the game in June.

  • Pogatetz and goalkeeper Lindner go for the same ball from McClean's cross, good work from the Sunderland players.
  • PENALTY - IRELAND; Long taken down and the ref points to the spot. But no Robbie Keane, who will take it?
  • Pogatetz the guilty party and Jon Walters to take.
  • 25 mins: GOAL - IRELAND: Walters scores.
  • 26 mins: And fair play to the Stoke man, who has taken some stick for missing from the spot for his club this season.

  • Julian Baumgartlinger on for Junuzovic, who took the brunt of the tackle from McCarthy.
  • Germany are 2-0 up and it's those scoring midfielders Reus and Gotze with the goals.
  • 30 mins: Lovely work from Long on the left touchline as he backheels the ball to Sammon.
  • 33 mins: Good period of pressure from Ireland, with Long and McClean at the heart of it.
  • 34 mins: John O'Shea comes roaring into the challenge and gives away a free-kick.

  • 36 mins: Marko Arnautovic's long-range effort goes sailing over the bar.

  • Forde mis-kicks the clearance and Sustria take possession in Ireland's half.
  • 39 mins: Off the post from Long after a great bit of skill, backheeling from Sammon's cross.

  • Long has been outstanding so far, full of tricks and movement. And of course he won the penalty.
  • AidanCostaRica I think Ireland have discovered the two quality full backs since Kelly and Irwin
  • Harnik appeals for a penalty, complaining of a hold from Wilson. Ireland get away with that one.
  • Flurries of snow now at the Aviva.
  • 43 mins: And finally an Austrian goes in the book and it's Kavlak on Long.
  • Long again at the heart of things as he drags Pogatetz all over the place, gets a nice cross in but Walters and Sammon can't do anything with it.
  • 45 mins: McClean's corner is cleared, but the winger wins another one.
  • One minute of added time.
  • GOAL - IRELAND: Walters right on the whistle
  • Glenn Whelan took over the corner-taking and Walters gets in front of Fuchs and nods in to the corner.
  • And that's half-time, what a finish to the the first 45 minutes as Walters gives Ireland a 2-1 lead.
  • And Ireland deserved it after really taking command of the game after the early Austrian goal. Long outstanding and Walters proving that hard work pays off.
  • AidanCostaRica Ireland growing in confidence, Do I Like That, I Love It!!
  • Dunphy calls for Hoolahan to come on, but Brady wouldn't change the team. Gilesie has the casting vote and says leave well enough alone.
  • GreenMuppet Great blog here---over on RTE website their livestream bombed out and their blog suck, as a result missed the second goal
  • Jon Walters proves again that the right side of midfield is the best place to score goals from for Ireland. Ray Houghton made a career of it after all.

  • Billy Murphy Cool photo of Mozza. Man's a genius. Supposed to be playing concerts in the US, canceled that malarky and hes watching the match at the Aviva instead. Nicely played Mozza. Hope we get another good half in the second.
  • Ilkay Gundogan scored Germany's third in their stroll over Kazakhstan in Nuremburg.

  • Sammon pushed in the back by Dragovic right in front of the referee but it's not given.
  • Long is giving Pogatetz a terrible time of it tonight and he'll be glad to get back to West Ham.
  • Coleman concedes Ireland's first corner of the game.
  •  Hosiner replaced by Marc Janko.
  • Ireland's front two have put in some miles in this game, hard to imagine both playing a full 90 tonight.
  • 65 mins: Plenty of possession from the Austrians at this stageand Trap might look to change things around.
  • And another corner to Austria, who are pushing up on Ireland here. Forde collects the kick though.
  • And Walters wins a free-kick to calm things down a bit.
  • Coleman and Whelan make a mess of the opportunity in the end.

  • Sean St Ledger is about to come on and Ireland's first change is an enforced one.
  • Terence J. Husband Weimann (Villa)...a danger man.
  • Huge amount of free-kicks in this game, Wilson the guilty party this time.
  • Weimann gets a dangerous ball into the box there and Ireland are under pressure here.

  • Hoolahan really needs to come on here and get his foot on the ball as Ireland are fading in the middle of the park.
  • But the Norwich man still has his big coat on on the bench.
  • 14 minutes to go and it could be tough going for Ireland.
  • The momentum has really swung in this gam and Ireland need to grab it back just now.

  • And Green is fouled and Ireland have a good position here.
  • 3 minutes of injury time.
  • Coleman clears from a good Austrian attack, nerves frayed.

  • GOAL - AUSTRIA: And Alaba scorres.
  • Disaster as the Bayern Munich player gets far too much space, but it's a great finish.
  • Full-time:
  • A very flat ending for Ireland and there's a few boos as the whistle is blown.
  • Ireland should really have been able to dictate that game in the second half, but in the end it was Austria that controlled affairs and took their chance at the death.
  • From a possible second place in Group C back to fourth and that's really hurt Ireland's chances of grabbing the second spot come later this year.
  • James How can you let a team like Austria score in the closing mins? Ireland have no chance of making it to the World Cup now!
  • AidanCostaRica Taking Long off who was our best and most positive player has to be seen as a big mistake by the management, we did something similar years ago when 2-0 up against Israel at home.
  • Michael The question is: why Trapattoni didn't make the third substitution during injury time? It would have helped
  • Billy Murphy Gobsmacked ! Probably will be for a little while.
  • John Giles still thinks it's possible to qualify and doesn't think there should be a change of manager at this stage of the campaign.Brady agrees with John, but Eamon wants him out.
  • A distraught-looking Trap thinks Ireland played a good match and mentions Shane Long's backheel against the post.
  • He really is shell-shocked, admits the midfield was tired and so was Long.
  • He finishes on a defiant note, saying he will not consider his position.
