6.30am. Paris motor show fun begins. One security gate open with two security guards checking bags. This could get messy as the crowds arrive.

Whatever about the new cars, visitors are under serious threat of being run over by forklifts or hit by rolls of carpet being rushed to lay on stands. The opening of the show seems to have caught organisers by surprise.

So to the metal on display and while we await the unveiling of more mainstream new cars, have to admit to a soft spot for the Maserati Levante. Looks really smart, a bit like the Infiniti crossovers sold in the US a few years back.

One of the perks of growing up in France is that you can drive one of these Ligiers from the age of 14. Classed as quadricycle with 500cc engines. In Ireland you can drive on a moped licence.

Top speed for the Ligier Microcar is just 45km/h. Prices in France start at €8,000. No Irish sales and no more right hand drive so if you want one you need to import it yourself.

For years the likes of Valeo, a parts supplier with a facility in Co Galway, was the poor cousin at motor shows. No more. They may be tucked behind the big car stands but with the tech revolution in cars underway, firms like this are catching the attention as they are at the heart of the tech behind self-driving cars and the like.

First press bunfight of the day for me is the VW press conference. Basically each car brand gets 15 minutes to hold a press conference. The rotation between stands starts at 7am and ends around 5pm. Like lemmings -or Pokemon players - the media mob moves from one stand to the next. Attend all the conferences and you are likely to need several months rehab in a Tibetan monastery retreat.

Unsurprisingly VW press conference is the busiest so far this morning. The execs are seated and security in place. Last Paris show Greenpeace staged a stunt at the VW conference. Expect the French will not let the same happen again.

"Volkswagen dealing with current challenges. Our future will be electric and fully competitive. We will tackle new competitors like Tesla and Apple." VW expects a breakthrough in electric cars by - you've guessed it - 2020. Every car firm has grand plans for 2020. It is going to be some year...

Next generation eGolf will have electric range of up to 300km on a single charge.

And so the new ID concept. Promising 600km of electric range, autonomous driving and a choice of manual driving or auto pilot mode. Sounds really impressive but remember this is a concept so the cynic in me sees it as basically a car shell and a press release. Will we ever see it on the road? I would not hold my breath.

A quick photo and VW CEO departs without comment. It is a 100 metre walk for him and the rest of the VW Group bosses to the Seat stand for its conference. Basically the next hour will see the VW empire of brands on display.

With all the talk of the dawn of self-driving cars, we have an insightful piece today from experts in the field at NUI Galway on the likely impact these cars will have on the motor insurance sector. Insurers claim to have problems now: wait until self-driving cars are on the roads. http://www.irishtimes.com/b...

Toyota also showing its new CH-R crossover. Smart little thing. Think beefed up Yaris but with a lot better styling. Toyota needs a sales hit and this could be it. Production car is actually better looking than the concept they trotted around the shows in recent years.

This is the new Honda Civic, albeit the hot hatch Typr R prototype. The regular hatchback goes on sale early next year with a choice 1 litre petrol and 1.5 litre petrol engine both turbo. A Diesel 1.6 litre will be offered shortly after launch. The late in 2017 will come the production version of this Type R.

Car firms have long ago abandoned the idea of having women pose with their cars but the Koreans still do it occasionally. Not as blatant as the bikini-clad models freezing in Stepwhn's Green in Dublin for photo shoots for snack bars or shampoo, but a close second. Thankfully an exception at the Paris show.

Opel has raised the electric bar with the new Ampera electric supermini. Promises a range of 500km on a full charge. 400km range was SO 9am this morning. Arriving in showrooms in Europe in Spring but not yet planned as a right hand drive so no confirmation of when/if it will come to Ireland. Pity.

Mercedes new EQ concept with 500km range. Merc has some gorgeous cars on display. The EQ is not one of them. According to boss Zetche: "Mercedes will lead the electric car market by 2025, outselling all other brands including newcomers (aka Apple, Tesla)." That's fighting talk.

The new Maybavh concept from the rear. I guess if you ever got to own one you would never want to look back so no need for rear view mirrors. Would be a nightmare to park in a multi-storey car park however.

Back to reality with Ssangyong. The brand was a joke in the early 2000s with some truly awful cars but it has radically improved in the last three-four years. No one is laughing now, particularly not competitors. The Tivoli is very impressive and great value. At Paris it is showing off a concept version of its upcoming big SUV.

Ssangong's new SUV concept: looks like dozens of other similarly sized SUVs, but if the Korean firm gets the price right it will help continue its revival. To understand Ssangyong place in the market, think Hyundai and Kia five years ago.

Busy show for Peugeot with new 3008 and 5008. Brand is striving to move upmarket.
  • 11:56
3008 wIll be sold with the option of a smart electric scooter or a fold-up electric bike that fits in boot and recharges when it is there. What's more ilthe bike and scooter are the work of Peugeot's young Irish designer Cathal Loughnane. A real rising star in the automotive design world and graduate of DIT.
  • 12:01
Peugeot's fold-up Electric scooter has a range of 12km on a single charge, while the fold up electric bike manages up to 50km. Nice feature to the cars and they fit smartly in the boot of the new 3008.

Never thought I would ever say this but the new Nissan Micra is a bit of a star at the show. As someone from another brand - rival to Nissan - said to me, for the first time I could see a 25 year being happy to own a Micra. That is high praise indeed.
  • 12:51
Fair to say this new Nissan Micra is a world apart from the drab bubble car they have been flogging for the last decade or more.

Even the interior of the new Micra is much better than what went before. Perhaps giving it the Micra name does a disservice to this new car.

Time for a little more crazy concepts. This is the Renault Trezor, which apparently is a design vision of the French brand's future styling. In fairness its chief designer Lauren van den Acker has worked miracles on the firm's current range so he deserves licence for a bit of daydreaming.

The Lexus UX concept from the back; and that's it's best angle. I don't know what was on the mind of Lexus designers but they seem to be preparing for Armageddon. Anger management classes may be in order.

Back at Mercede and the EQ concept that promises inductive charging, so no plugs. But again this is all in the realm of concept car wishful thinking. As for the styling it is pretty conservative for a concept that promises so much change in the future.

We are entering the final stages of the press day at Paris and even the most avid car fans are starting to wilt. The heat of the lights, the crowds and the fact this is a gathering of thousands of motoring hacks means deodorants are being tested to the limit. Having a head cold has its upside.

In Paris 33% don't own a car or want to own one. This trend is similar in many large cities. To counter this PSA premium brand DS is planning a rental scheme for these customers. Operated through DS dealers. Interesting approach to a challenge faced by all car firms.

And that is that. More electric cars than you can shake a plug lead at and grand promises for 2020. It is going to be a helluva year. My favourite car? Probably the BMW X2 concept. And still surprised by how good the Nissan Micra looks. In the meantime it is only left to me to say salut and thanks for putting up with my rankings.
