13:41After last week’s predictions the only thing that it’s safe to say this summer is that there may be surprises.
In fairness, I don’t think I was alone in not predicting Galway’s first Leinster championship title before last week’s thriller. Well, this week I’ve learnt my lesson. No more predictions – for one thing the games this week are harder to predict.
First up is the Connacht final at Dr Hyde Park where Mayo will take on Sligo. In recent years Connacht finals have been close - five of the last seven finals have been won by a solitary point so this is strictly a no-prediction zone. Definitely not. No sir, not me, never…. Mayo.
Then we have the Munster hurling final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Tipperary and Waterford contest the final this year and although Tipp should have enough to overcome the Déise I won’t be betting on either team. But if I was to back one team (which naturally I’m not doing in light of last week) I certainly wouldn’t want to nominate Tipperary over Waterford. That’s not for me. Just to be clear, I’m not tipping Tipp…..Tipperary.
As if that wasn’t enough I’ll be keeping you up to date with the qualifiers where Kerry will beat Westmeath, Monaghan will see off Laois and Kildare will kill off Cavan for another year. I also predict the words saga and Seanie Johnston will be uttered in the same sentence by people up and down the country many times this afternoon.
So there you are - my non-predictions. Feel free to proffer your own so that we can all ridicule them when they fall flat. My name is Ciaran Daly but I may be forced into changing it to Paddy Powerless by the end of the day. I predict some backtracking.

-
13:48Mayo manager James Horan wouldn’t do an interview with TV3 on the basis that they wanted to ask him questions about Conor Mortimer.
-
13:49More on Mortimer here - http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2012/0712/1224319859919.html
-
13:54We haven’t even discussed yesterday’s games. Some real shocks. Antrim beating Galway with two injury-time points was breath-taking. Tipperary also beat Wexford who were wasteful in front of goal again. Elsewhere Limerick saw off a dogged Longford side while Leitrim beat Wicklow. Cork easily beat Wexford in the hurling qualifiers and Limerick edged out Clare. It was a great day of GAA action. What was the result of the day?
-
13:57TheThe teams for today’s Connacht football final
MAYO: D Clarke; K Keane, G Cafferkey, K Higgins; Keegan, D Vaughan, C Boyle; B Moran, D Geraghty; KMcLoughlin, C O’Connor, A Dillon; E Varley, A Moran, J Doherty.
SLIGO: P Greene; N Ewing, J Martyn, R Donovan; C Harrison, M Quinn, P McGovern; S McManus, T Taylor; A Costello, D Maye, B Egan; M Breheny, A Marren, D Kelly.
-
13:58Will all the Mortimer talk have distracted Mayo or galvanised them?
-
14:00We’re off!
-
14:00Damian Ruddy Result of the Day y'day was Down Minor Hurlers winning first Ulster Title since 1994. A good omen for next Sunday, hopefully.
-
14:01Not that you're biased Damian!
-
14:02Good crowd at the match anyway.
-
14:03Enda Varley drills a shot wide. It’s been a tentative start from both sides. Expect it to open up.
-
14:043 mins – Danny Geraghty gets Mayo off the mark. Mayo 0-1 Sligo 0-0
-
14:06It’s sloppy stuff from both sides. Some poor handling. Yes, I’m sitting in my Ivory Tower.
-
14:06Costello has kicked an unbelievably good free from a serious distance there. We’re even.
-
14:07
-
14:08Dr Hyde Park is a bigger pitch than Croke Park. You learn something new every day.
-
14:10The ball is in the net but it won’t count.
-
14:10Andy Moran with a good finish but the handpass into him was adjudged to have been illegal.
-
14:12It’s been fairly turgid so far. It’s a bit like rugby. A lot of handpassing without going forward.
-
14:13
-
14:13Both sides shooting wides. Antrim would clean up in Connacht!
-
14:15Referee Cormac Reilly getting praise from the TV3 team but does no one else think he has been fussy?
-
14:15
-
14:1514 mins - Sligo lead
-
14:16Marren to Kelly and a great finish from the latter. Best move of the match. Sligo 0-3 Mayo 0-1
-
14:16
-
14:17The Sligo defence has been excellent so far. Can they keep it up?
-
14:19The umpires have flagged that Mayo effort wide….eventually. The umpire went to grab the flag but renaged. It was definitely wide.
-
14:20Ross Donovan has been excellent so far for Sligo but hints that Mayo are beginning to win at midfield.
-
14:21Adrian Marren with a good score.
-
14:21
-
14:2220 minutes gone and the game hasn’t really caught fire. Sligo will hope it never does if they can stay three points in front for the duration.
-
14:24It’s all a bit directionless. We’re used to seeing more tactical nous in the Championship this year. The Mayo players in particular look to me like they aren’t exactly sure of their game-plan.
-
14:24Andy Moran fists off the post and wide. That’s their fifth wide of the first half.
-
14:26Charlie Harrison penalised for a foul on Enda Varley. Didn’t see much in it myself.
-
14:26
-
14:2625 mins - Enda Varley converts the free. Mayo 0-2 Sligo 0-4
-
14:28Mayo’s attacks are far too deliberate and Sligo are able to harry them out of possession
-
14:28David Maye receives a yellow card.
-
14:29Mark Breheny is also booked now.
-
14:30Donal Vaughan had so much time to take a score and he tried to walk it into the net. Silly stuff from Mayo there.
-
14:3130 mins – Marren converts a free for Sligo. Mayo 0-2 Sligo 0-5
-
14:31
-
14:33Another goal chance for Mayo. Another one wasted by Mayo. Good block from Sligo that time.
-
14:33
-
14:34Mayo have been looking a little more fluent in the last couple of minutes.
-
14:35When a match is described as ‘absorbing’ it almost inevitably means it has been low-scoring and of a poor quality. This final has certainly been absorbing then.
-
14:37
-
14:37Half-time: Sligo 0-5 Mayo 0-3
-
14:38Sligo have been impressive defensively but had Mayo taken points instead of going for goal all the time they’d be level at the very least.
-
14:40Why oh why do Mayo keep going for goal? Is it fear or is it a tactic?
-
14:43This game is not doing anything to dispel the myth that Connacht football is in the doldrums.
-
14:48We’re seeing replays of the disallowed goal. Very harsh on Cillian O’Connor in retrospect. Lateral hand-pass? When has that ever been penalised this year?
-
14:49We’re getting close to the 3 o’clock throw-ins. Cavan and Kildare at least has a bit of bite to it.
-
14:54Westmeath take on Kerry in Mullingar. Hearing reports that there are more Kerry fans there. As if Westmeath footballers weren’t disheartened enough having drawn the Kingdom.
-
14:54So Mayo are going to turn this around, aren’t they?
-
14:55
-
14:56No changes at Dr Hyde Park
-
14:5623,257 – decent attendance in Roscommon.
-
14:57Mayo start with a wide.
-
14:58
-
14:5837 mins - Andy Moran shows a bit of impetus and scores a decent point. Mayo 0-4 Sligo 0-5
-
14:59Something that both teams need to address – the shooting has been woefully inaccurate.
-
15:00Good point from Breheny. Sligo 0-6 Mayo 0-4
-
15:00
-
15:00Surely the game has to become more open?
-
15:01Lee Keegan sees yellow for a cynical off the ball hit
-
15:02
-
15:02Mayo Sub: Aidan O’Shea on, Danny Geraghty off
-
15:04
-
15:04Cillian O’Connor converts a free. Just one in it now.
-
15:04We're level
-
15:04
-
15:04
-
15:05
-
15:05Aidan O’Shea with a superb catch at midfield.
-
15:06Marren draws a foul which should put Sligo in front.
-
15:08Compelling, absorbing, intriguing – commentator-speak for poor, turgid, disappointing.
-
15:08Enda Varley goes off. Hasn’t had the best of days.
-
15:08Eamon O’Hara is on for Sligo.
-
15:09
-
15:09Cavan are two points up on Kildare. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if Cavan put Kildare out?
-
15:10Mayo are relying heavily on Alan Dillon and Andy Moran
-
15:10
-
15:11
-
15:11
-
15:11I’m proud that I haven’t made some pathetic remark about David Maye being ex-Man Utd defender David May….until now.
-
15:12
-
15:12O’Hara and Barry Moran both pick up yellow cards.
-
15:12Ciaran Wouldn’t it be fantastic if Cavan put Kildare out? Ehhhh NO!
-
15:13
-
15:13Maybe not for Kildare people but with Seanie Johnston leaving Cavan and going to Kildare – it’d be funny enough for the rest of us.
-
15:13Guest Oh yes it would!
-
15:14
-
15:14Paddy Oh yes it would!
-
15:14We’re level again in Connacht. Mayo beginning to look the more likely team but it’s fairly uninspiring stuff.
-
15:15
-
15:15It’s decided then – it’d be hilarious if Cavan put Kildare out. Come on the Breffni men!
-
15:16
-
15:17Kerry were trailing Westmeath by three points but Kerry being Kerry had to go and spoil it all by doing something stupid like scoring a goal. Penalty.
-
15:17Paddy So says the whole country
-
15:17Neutral Lets like kildare for what thy are, an honest hard working team and forget about all the rubbih re johnston...let the best team(kidare) win!
-
15:18
-
15:19Ciaran Well said 'neutral'. Mind you, the general consensus in Kildare is, they can have him back if they want. Kildare lose = McGeeney out & Glen Ryan in. Anyhow, come on ye Lilies!!
-
15:19
-
15:19MunsterGAA via Twitter Munster MHC Final Result Tipp 1-16 Clare 1-12 #gaa
-
15:19
-
15:20Fair enough ‘Neutral’ Think Johnston’s transfer has worked against Kildare that way. It’s definitely taken the focus off all the good work that has been done.
-
15:21
-
15:21Still, as an Ulster man, I’m cheering on Cavan. It’s not because of the Seanie Johnston issue….I swear…..
-
15:21Paddy Come on cavan
-
15:22
-
15:22
-
15:22
-
15:22So we’re into the last 10 minutes of the Connacht final. Sligo have put in one hell of a shift. Can you believe they’ve only won the Nestor Cup three times?
-
15:23There you go. Kildare are taking Cavan apart now it seems.
-
15:23Paddy I'm cheering on Cavan as I am an ulster man and because of johnston
-
15:24Monaghan are 0-5 to 0-3 up on Laois by the by
-
15:25Mayo score a ‘point.’ Looked clearly wide. That’s poor.
-
15:25
-
15:26Kerry are being beaten by Westmeath. Kerry 1-1 Westmeath 0-6
-
15:26
-
15:26
-
15:26Cillian O’Connor puts Mayo two points in front. At least if they win by two points that non-point won’t be so contentious.
-
15:27Ciaran a lot of missed chances by both Mayo n Sligo. Seriously Contentious point by Mayo to put them 1 up and Kildare.....BOOM!!
-
15:27Seriously dodgy decision, wasn’t it? I hope for Sligo’s sake they don’t lose due to that contentious decision.
-
15:27Paddy Up mayo-I live there!
-
15:28
-
15:28Mayo need to improve. All-Ireland contenders? Not on this evidence.
-
15:28
-
15:28There’s one point in it with three minutes to go in Connacht.
-
15:29Ciaran Have to agree. Sligo have bee brill 2day.
-
15:29
-
15:29
-
15:29To be fair to Mayo they were tested today and they look like they’re going to come through it.
-
15:30Imagine. Just imagine if Westmeath beat Kerry. I think we’d all have a good laugh then, right?
-
15:31
-
15:31Laois lead Monaghan by a goal. Colm Kelly found the net. 1-5 to 0-5
-
15:31Louise Sligo - a goal, Christ lads COME ON
-
15:31
-
15:32Nothing else will do now Louise!
-
15:32Kldareman most people and players in kildare were against johnston coming particularly in the manner he did, but i think the rest of the country needs to stop this anti-kildare thing as were still the same team that was well liked last year for our give it a lash attittude and admiral fitness, be anti-johnton if you like or simply agaisnt what he did but kildare
-
15:32Ciaran now that would be funny!
-
15:32
-
15:33Kldareman ..but kildare shouldnt be looked down on! upthe lillies! showin up cavan without any outside help!
-
15:33
Colm Boyle of Mayo faceplants with the help of Sligo's Alan Costello in Dr Hyde Park. - James Crombie/Inpho -
15:34
-
15:34It’s over in Connacht. Mayo win.
-
15:34
-
15:34FT: Mayo 0-12 Sligo 0-10
-
15:35It’s an interesting sentiment Kildareman. I’d agree that Kildare were well-liked but Kildare actively sought Johnston as much as he did them. Surely they have to take some of the blame?
-
15:36
-
15:38
-
15:38
-
15:38Brendan Quigley’s goal for Laois was a beauty by all accounts. Laois 2-6 Monaghan 0-7 now
-
15:38
-
15:39Kerry are still losing…..imagine….
-
15:40That Mayo victory was unspectacular but in the end it’s a win. Kudos to Sligo. They were defensively strong but just not strong enough. Any other clichés I can fit in?
-
15:40Paddy What are the scores ?
-
15:41
-
15:41Laois 2-7 Monaghan 0-8
Westmeath 0-8 Kerry 1-3
Cavan 0-4 Kildare 2-11
-
15:41
-
15:42
-
15:43All the 3 o’clock games have reached half-time.
-
15:43Kldareman mcgeeney my have actively facilitated or encouraged him to move but i think it doesnt reflect a general feeling in kildare that we wanted him in..very few if any real kildare people are happy with what happened
-
15:44I think we’re all glad to hear that. Does McGeeney have too much power in Kildare then or can you argue with him given what he has been doing with the team?
-
15:47Naturally, I’ll keep you updated with everything in the second half of the qualifiers games but what about the Munster hurling final? Are we all happy enough to tip Tipp?
-
15:52Kldareman he has too much power alright..county board are afraid of him! he's brouht us up a notch or two though in fairness to him! anyway enough said about it let the football do the talkin!
-
15:53Well, there’s no doubt about it. Kildare are doing the business on the pitch today. Some fantastic players and a great team ethic.
-
15:54Is there a chance that Kerry won’t turn it around in the second half against Westmeath?
-
15:54They’re up and running again in Cavan.
-
15:56Laois and Monaghan is also underway again. No changes to either side.
-
15:57
-
15:58Darran O’Sullivan has been introduced by Kerry. They’re clearly worried
-
15:58
-
15:59John O’Shea and Stephen Hunt are at the Munster hurling final. No foreign games for the lads today.

-
16:47Kerry just about progress. Are they in serious trouble this year or is it a case of when you begin to doubt them they’ll win the All-Ireland again? Maybe this was the kick up the backside they need.
-
16:49Now that all of the football is out of the way we can concentrate on the fantastic Munster hurling final. If the second half is as good as the first was it will go down as a classic

17:10Ciarán Michael Walsh….why are commentators fascinated by his nickname ‘Brick’??? So annoying.....Other than that…what a game.
-
17:12Yeah, he doesn’t need to be given his nickname every time he touches the ball. After all he’s just another brick in the wall….I’m sorry about that. What a game. A Waterford goal needed now surely.
-
17:12Yep, that's the feeling that things are going awry for Waterford. Shanahan misses another for Waterford.
-
17:13Not even the evergreen Browne can rescue Waterford as he fires wide.
-
17:14Waterford’s Eoin Kelly, fed by Shanahan fires directly at Brendan Cummins. You can’t spurn chances like this against Tipperary.

-
17:35GAA speeches, eh?!
-
17:37Less shouting. More microphone.
-
17:38Isn't the three cheers shtick is patronising?
-
17:50What a weekend of action? Yet again, Munster has produced a great hurling match. Tipperary may feel that momentum is with them after hard-fought wins over Cork and now Waterford. Is 2012 their year?
Mayo’s win in the Connacht football championship was less impressive and they have much to work on before they can consider themselves true All-Ireland contenders? So, somewhat surprisingly do Kerry. The Kingdom overcame Westmeath by the minimum and left it late at that. All is not well in the Kerry camp it seems but can they turn it around?
That is in direct contrast to Kieran McGeeney’s Kildare who had a huge win over Cavan. It was only made better by finally getting the Seanie Johnston monkey off their back. Now, let’s never speak of it again.
All of which means that those predictions I made at the start of the day came to pass (what do you mean ‘What about the Laois v Monaghan match?’ – that’s not important – Laois may have won but I can’t appear infallible, it’d be smug). The important thing was that I made a clutch of predictions and the vast majority of them proved to be correct. Let’s all take that away with us.
For more outlandish claims and for a bit of craic during the matches, come back to the same place and same site next week. It’d be rude not to. See you then.
