13:33Today’s feature match sees the two best hurling teams in the world go head to head as Cork and Tipperary battle for the chance to play Waterford in the Munster senior hurling final. Of course that’s only true if we all agree that Kilkenny are on a different planet to every other team in the country right now.
Most commentators agree that any remote chance of Kilkenny’s All-Ireland crown being snatched from them lies with either Tipp or Cork. Rejuvenated under Jimmy Barry-Murphy Cork and playing at home Cork may feel that they have enough to see off the 2010 All-Ireland champions. The rest of us may feel that whoever wins is merely playing for an All-Ireland runners-up medal.
Before then we head to Ulster to watch the mighty Down (I am NOT biased) to take on lowly Monaghan (repeat – I am NOT biased). While Monaghan clearly lack the ball-playing finesse (not biased) of James McCartan’s heroic charges, Down do have a habit of underperforming in Ulster. May the best team win….so long as that best team line out in red and black.
On top of that we’ll be keeping you up to date with the hammering that should happen in McHale Park where Mayo look set to devour Leitrim. I could be wrong there but we all know I’m not.
So get ready for another Sunday full of the very best GAA action with me, Ciaran Daly, an objective sports journalist of the utmost integrity. An Dún abú!

13:42About last night. Kilkenny. We’re running out of superlatives but my oh my, what a performance. Ok, so realistically maybe no one expected Dublin to beat Kilkenny but certainly when I spoke to a few of the game’s best known pundits a few weeks ago they pointed to last night’s match as a potential tough test for the reigning champions. Brian Cody’s players weren’t up for a close game though. They steamrolled a decent Dublin outfit and Henry Shefflin scored his 500th championship point in the process. There’s no doubt about it at this stage surely – this Kilkenny team are the greatest ever to have played the game.
-
13:46And so to a youtube tribute to Henry Shefflin. A fine point in his illustrious hurling career but really the dramatic music is what makes this video. Turn it up and wonder what the person who uploaded it was thinking by underscoring it with such dark audio.

14:00And before the throw-in to the Down v Monaghan match we should return to the issue that has cast a shadow of the GAA in the past week. Mullane v Davy Fitz – an encounter so fraught with tension that it demands to be given ‘gate’ as a suffix. We’ll settle on ‘Curse-gate.’
In case you’ve been in a coma this week I’ll recap. John Mullane celebrated wildly in front of former manager Davy Fitzgerald at the final whistle when Waterford overcame Clare in the Munster semi-hurling final.
Later on the Sunday Game it had transpired that Davy Fitz had been caught on camera cursing at someone (it remains unclear exactly who that was). Imagine, cursing at a GAA match. I know, I can’t believe it either.
Well RTE told us it merited investigation and ‘Curse-gate’ was born. Then on ‘Championship Matters’ John Mullane spoke with Marty Morrissey, Alan Kerrins and our own Malachy Clerkin about the whole episode. Sense prevailed and as usual Malachy Clerkin was the voice of reason. Check out the discussion.

14:053 mins – Darren Hughes points a free to put Monaghan temporarily in front. Monaghan 0-1 Down 0-0
-
14:075 mins – Paul Finlay just scored a disgustingly good score, hugging the touchline. Monaghan 0-2 Down 0-0
-
14:086 mins – Monaghan 0-3 Down 0-0. Ok, Down, we know you like to make it tough on your fans but come on.
-
14:08
-
14:08Guest Darren Hughes points a free to put Monaghan temporarily in front. Monaghan 0-1 Down
-
14:08Guest i dont get it?
-
14:08Guest disgustingly good score? can we use these terms?
-
14:08
-
14:08Guest your starting to sound a bit biased Mr Daly
-
14:09How could someone who signs off their introduction with ‘An Dún abú’ be accused of bias? I don’t understand…..
-
14:10
-
14:109 mins - Down are on the score-sheet. They still trail. Monaghan 0-3 Down 0-1
-
14:1411 mins – Monaghan are definitely the better side so far. Yes, I am saying that begrudgingly and that’s without Tommy Freeman.
-
14:14
-
14:1514 mins – Monaghan 0-4 Down 0-1.
-
14:16
-
14:1615 mins – It’s another point for Monaghan. 0-5 to 0-1 they lead.
-
14:18
-
14:1816 mins – Paul Finlay adds another. This is one-way traffic. No one likes one-way traffic. Apart from people from Monaghan. They love one-way traffic systems. Monaghan 0-6 Down 0-1
-
14:19
-
14:20Conor McManus has been excellent for Monaghan
-
14:2019 mins - Finlay scores another. Mon 0-7 Down 0-1
-
14:21Finally, Monaghan have the good grace to fire wide.
-
14:23Vinny Corey has got further forward than any Down forward.
-
14:23
-
14:2422 mins - Rodgers fouled. Free converted by O’Hare. Monaghan 0-7 Down 0-2
-
14:25Midfielder Ambrose Rodgers denied a goal by a good save. Down showing slights signs of improvement.
-
14:2625 mins – Conor McManus scores his fourth point of the game. Monaghan 0-8 Down 0-2
-
14:26
-
14:27I don’t care if Benny Coulter’s in a coma, Down need him on that football pitch.
-
14:29This game needs a goal. A Down goal. I’m worried that neutrals will lose interest. That’s all.
-
14:30
-
14:3029 mins – Conor McManus launches over another fantastic free. Monaghan 0-9 Down 0-2
-
14:32A text I’ve just received from a Down-supporting friend – ‘I don’t know who’s performing worse – Down or the referee.’
When a team is losing you can always blame the ref. He’s been blameless enough today.
-
14:32
-
14:33When was the last time Down crossed the half-way line?
-
14:3433 mins - Paul Finlay scores yet another. Monaghan 0-10 Down 0-2
-
14:34
-
14:35
-
14:3534 mins - Dick Clerkin getting in on the act now. Good score. Mon 0-11 Down 0-2
-
14:36PENALTY! Conor Laverty with a superb run into the heart of the Monaghan defence before he was taken out.
-
14:36officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Intermediate Championship@HT: Cork 0-6 Tipperary 3-10. #gaa2012
-
14:37
-
14:3736 mins –GOAL! Aidan Carr just about slots it under Keogh in the Monagahn goal. Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-2
-
14:39
-
14:39Half-time : Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-2
-
14:42Monaghan have been better absolutely everywhere. Finlay, Clerkin, McManus, Gollighly have been outstanding. Down have been toothless. The positives Down can take from the first half are that they got a goal right at the end and their jerseys look great.
-
14:43Now let’s hear what the lads in the RTE studio have to say
-
14:46Pat Spillane praises Ulster football before rubbishing it. Well, I never…
-
14:48Right now James McCartan is delivering the greatest speech of his managerial career. Or he’d need to be because if not Down are going out with a whimper.
-
14:49Meanwhile, in the Monaghan changing room Tommy Freeman is being wrapped up in cotton wool in preparation for the Ulster final.
-
14:54The attendance at the Down v Monaghan match – 11,149. People are obsessed by attendances. People in the GAA that is.
-
14:57The spectre of Marty Clarke looms large over this Down team according to Pat Spillane. Damn you Australia with all that you have to offer.
-
14:58
-
14:58We’re back on in Armagh. Liam Doyle, Dan Gordon and Benny Coulter were all late additions to the Down subs bench.
-
15:0037 mins – Aidan Carr puts a free wide. Not exactly the start they needed to the second half.
-
15:01Another wide from Down. Dubious. It looked over. That’s my bias speaking.
-
15:02
-
15:02GAA players love spitting on their hands, don't they?
-
15:03Down have had more possession in the first five minutes of this half than they had for the entire first half. They are being as ineffective with it as they were without it.
-
15:0442 mins – Donal O’Hare scores a free. Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-3
-
15:06Did Dick Clerkin and Owen Lennon come out for the second half?
-
15:07
-
15:0744 mins - Duffin with another point. Did someone say comeback? Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-4
-
15:09
-
15:0946 mins - Walshe penalised for an off-the-ball challenge on O’Hare. If I was the ref, I’d have bought Walshe’s innocent face. O’Hare converts. Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-5
-
15:10Down are even winning balls in the defence. It’s like living in the twilight zone.
-
15:1147 mins - Conor Laverty scores a fantastic point. Down’s best player by some distance. Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-6
-
15:11Down have been amazing since half-time. Now, I’m not one to begin whispers of performance enhancing drugs but…
-
15:1249 mins – Another Laverty score. Monaghan 0-11 Down 1-7
-
15:12
-
15:13
-
15:13Monaghan sub - Duffy on for Hughes
-
15:14Eoin McCartan picks up a yellow card. I think he did that just to remind everyone he is still on the pitch.
-
15:15Down appeal for a penalty. The fans have appealed for about five in this game and they’ve only been in the square about three times.
-
15:17RTE think it should have been a penalty. I don’t. What do you think?
-
15:18
-
15:1855 mins - Darren Hughes gets Monaghan’s first score of the second half. Monaghan 0-12 Down 1-7
-
15:19
-
15:1956 mins – Aidan Carr reduces the difference to one point again. Mon 0-12 Down 1-8
-
15:20
-
15:2056 mins -GOAL! Who else but substitute Tommy Freeman! A quick free taken to Freeman who smashed it into the top corner. Mon 1-12 Down 1-8
-
15:20Down players protesting about the quick free. No cause for complaint really.
-
15:22Down fans increasingly frustrated with the referee? Unfair criticism?
-
15:22
-
15:2359 mins - Donal O'Hare makes it Mon 1-12 Down 1-9
-
15:25
-
15:25Liam Doyle replaces substitute Kevin Duffin for Down
-
15:26I think there’s another goal somewhere in this game. There I said it. Let’s not remember this comment if it doesn’t happen.
-
15:26
-
15:28
-
15:28Benny Coulter who broke his ankle about seven weeks ago is going to come on for Down. Not that they’re getting desperate.
-
15:29
-
15:29Coulter’s first touch is a score. That sound you’re hearing is me eating my words. I called Down desperate by bringing Benny on. Maybe, just maybe I was wrong.
-
15:30
-
15:3067 mins – And there’s one between the sides. Doyle scores to make it Monaghan 1-13 Down 1-12
-
15:31I won’t say it’s been a game of two halves, I won’t say it’s been a game of two halves, I won’t say it’s been a game of two halves….
-
15:32
-
15:3269 mins – We’re level! Aidan Carr I never doubted you……*
*Aidan Carr I did doubt you.
-
15:3370 mins – Down lead. Darren O’Hagan fists over from close range. What a match!
-
15:33
-
15:3471 mins – Clerkin fires wide. It looked like a replay.
-
15:35Full-time – Monaghan 1-13 Down 1-14
-
15:35
-
15:36The best thing about that match is that Pat Spillane has had to eat humble pie. He had to say he enjoyed a game in Ulster
-
15:38William Whitla, Tommy Bowe, Charlene McKenna and Tommy Freeman, your boys took one hell of a beating…
-
15:38
-
15:39I’m going out on a limb and saying Ulster has produced the best matches of the Championship this year. Tell me I’m wrong. Go on, just try it.
-
15:39Leitrim are level with Mayo. Repeat. Leitrim are level with Mayo. I predict that will last all of 30 seconds.
-
15:39
-
15:40drumgath aiden carr i take it all back. delighted for liam doyle he symbolises the comeback
-
15:40Doyle, Carr and Coulter were all instrumental in the comeback. Laverty was the outstanding player. Credit to James McCartan too, he made the right changes at the right time.
-
15:41Where did it all go wrong for Monaghan?
-
15:42CiaranJDaly via Twitter RT @MarloweCanning: @CiaranJDaly I watched that game... I got in to it. It was wierd, like I was a wee lad again. Live blog was great as ...
-
15:44Yes, I did retweet praise of this blog and yes I realise what kind of person that makes me but I don’t care right now. Down are in their first Ulster final since 2003.

15:48For the record Jimmy Barry-Murphy will hereafter be abbreviated to JBM, not only for the sake of handiness but to make him cool like AVB (or as non-cool people know him, Andre Villas-Boas). Admittedly Jimmy Barry-Murphy doesn’t quite sound as continental as Andre Villas-Boas but he’s equally as cool.
-
15:50officialgaa via Twitter @officialgaa The accepted county nickname for Mayo is the Westerners.
-
15:50I’d like to think my prediction of Mayo hammering Leitrim is what has inspired Leitrim to keep in touch with their more illustrious opponents.

-
15:58So Mayo are now four points up. I’m not saying I’m some kind of football prophet – that’s probably for other people to say – but all I will say is that I’m some kind of football prophet.

16:37Pa Bourke had a chance to tap over and went for goal right at the end. Strange decision methinks. That was an outstanding half of hurling though. Nothing in it and by nothing I mean two points.
-
16:41Hard to beat the GAA sometimes. The hangover from the Euros is still around, the Irish rugby team were hammered but the Ulster football championship and now the Munster hurling championship have really provided top-notch entertainment.

16:46Let it end for Leitrim. They’re 16 points behind Mayo. Mayo have been working on their fitness to be fair. Their body fat percentage is bound to be incredibly low. Low fat Mayo. That long set-up wasn't worth the pathetic punch-line.
-
16:48
-
16:50So are the RTE panel and Nicky English wrong? Can Cork hold on in the second half? Can Lar Corbett go through a match without scoring a goal? Do you get tired of my unending questions?

16:55So you’d have thought that the pace of the first half couldn’t have been matched in the second? Two minutes gone. Two points scored. One for each team.
-
16:57officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@41': Cork 0-16 Tipperary 0-13. Paudie O'Sullivan puts three in it. #gaa2012
-
16:58officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@42': Cork 0-16 Tipperary 0-14. Another fine free from Bourke. #gaa2012
-
16:59Pa Bourke is a fundamentally Irish name but I could also see an old man going by the same name sitting out on his porch whistling and shooting vermon beside the Mississippi river.
-
16:59
-
16:59Lar Corbett hasn’t scored his mandatory goal yet. Cork defence – you have been warned.
-
17:00Just the 22 points between Mayo and Leitrim now.
-
17:01officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@44': Cork 0-16 Tipperary 0-15. Another Bourke free, and there is only one in it. #gaa2012
-
17:01
-
17:03officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@46': Cork 0-16 Tipperary 1-15. Noel McGrath buries to the net after a Corbett pass. #gaa2012
-
17:0345 mins - GOAL! Noel McGrath buries the ball in the Cork net. The surprise is that it wasn’t Lar Corbett. Tipp 1-15 Cork 0-16
-
17:04Conor Lehane is an exciting prospect but before the goal he ran himself into a bit of a cul-de-sac
-
17:04officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@47': Cork 0-16 Tipperary 1-16. Padraig Maher fires one over, three in it. #gaa2012
-
17:04officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@48': Cork 0-16 Tipperary 1-16. John O'Brien has been sent off for Tipperary. #gaa2012
-
17:04Tipp lead by a goal but are down to 14 men. John O’Brien is off for a second bookable offence. Silly challenge really.
-
17:06Something I’d genuinely love to know. In a game this intense, if Tipp do go on to lose, do the Tipp lads give John O’Brien hell for getting himself sent off needlessly like that?
-
17:06officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@50': Cork 0-17 Tipperary 1-16. Horgan puts two in it with a free. #gaa2012
-
17:08Daniel Kearney replaces Sweetnam in the Cork midfield
-
17:08officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@51': Cork 0-17 Tipperary 1-17. Brendan Maher puts over his second point. #gaa2012
-
17:09officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@52': Cork 0-18 Tipperary 1-17. Cian McCarthy flashes one over. #gaa2012
-
17:09McCarthy scores a point to reduce the arrears to two. Tipp 1-17 Cork 0-18
-
17:10Brendan Cummins is still such a good goalkeeper. He’s a record-breaker for a reason
-
17:10officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@54': Cork 0-19 Tipperary 1-17. O'Sullivan puts just one in it now. Some game on Leeside. #gaa2012
-
17:10Aaron hard to be impressed by either side both very mediocre,Cats will have a field day if they face either down the road unless the improve dramatically!
-
17:12You must be from Kilkenny Aaron where you’re spoiled with hurling of the highest quality year in year out. It’s an exciting spectacle – there’s no doubt about that surely.
-
17:12officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@55': Cork 0-20 Tipperary 1-17. Lehane levels it up. It's going to the wire. #gaa2012
-
17:12So 15 minutes to go and we’re level. This is perfectly poised.
-
17:13James Woodlock on for Brendan Maher
-
17:14Gervis Just back from down v Monaghan games. Fantastic comeback and a good advert for ulster football. The referee was a disgrace, I think both fans would agree on that. Terrible performance
-
17:14officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@58': Cork 0-20 Tipperary 1-18. Pa Bourke puts Tipp back ahead. #gaa2012
-
17:15officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@59': Cork 0-20 Tipperary 1-19. Pa Bourke from play this time, he's hit 0-11. #gaa2012
-
17:15A few questionable decisions maybe Gervis but maybe it’s a case of ‘better to have wronged and won than never to have been wronged at all’...or something like that.
-
17:16Still no Eoin Kelly for Tipp
-
17:17Am I wrong in sensing a turning of the tide in favour of Tipp heading into the last 10 minutes here?
-
17:17officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@60': Cork 0-21 Tipperary 1-20. Coughlan and McGrath trade scores. #gaa2012
-
17:17Aaron No doubt from a neutral point of view its quite the spectacle but while Tipp will win this out it will be hard to take any positives for them,to have an average side like cork give you a run for your money doesn't bode well for tipp.
-
17:18You're probably right. I said this earlier Aaron - the reality is that these teams are probably playing for an All-Ireland runners-up medal.
-
17:19Noel McGrath is a fantastic hurler.
-
17:19officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@62': Cork 0-21 Tipperary 1-21. Noel McGrath puts Tipp three clear. #gaa2012
-
17:20Conor Lehane’s debut is over. An exciting prospect for the future.
-
17:20officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@64': Cork 0-21 Tipperary 1-22. Tipp are edging away, Bourke puts them four clear with a free. #gaa2012
-
17:21Maybe O’Brien knew his sending-off would inspire Tipperary to push on. Maybe he’s a tactical genius.
-
17:21officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@65': Cork 0-22 Tipperary 1-22. Daniel Carney puts three in it again. #gaa2012
-
17:22Tipp lead by a goal. There are five and a half minutes left. Anything could happen between now and the end of this game.
-
17:23officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@67': Cork 0-23 Tipperary 1-22. Horgan puts another over, and only two it. #gaa2012
-
17:24officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@68': Cork 0-23 Tipperary 1-22. Eoin Kelly comes on for Tipperary. #gaa2012
-
17:24Pa Bourke goes off and Eoin Kelly comes on. Now, that’s what you call a replacement.
-
17:25Cian McCarthy fires wide. He should’ve hit the target at least really.
-
17:25Aaron Well that's True, and to be fair The Munster Championship is thee most entertaining provincial championship year in-year out always some great games and very competitive,The Leinster championship will never be as good mainly because their is only one side.
-
17:25Tommy Anything could but probably won't. Tipp been impressive holding the lead even when down a man...cracking match have a tenner on Tipp!
-
17:26Tommy, it looks like you're going to make some money today.
-
17:26Aaron Bad miss :/
-
17:26Backs up your theory about the standard of hurling certainly. Let's be kind and put it down to inexperience.
-
17:27officialgaa via Twitter Impressive Mayo see off Leitrim to move into Connacht final, read the report on GAA.ie http://gaa.ie/61c6b6 #gaa2012
-
17:28officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@71': Cork 0-23 Tipperary 1-22. In injury time, Tipp still lead by two. #gaa2012
-
17:28Cork have one minute to rescue this.
-
17:28Tommy Cracking defense Tipp...
-
17:28There was a super hook in there
-
17:29officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@72': Cork 0-24 Tipperary 1-22. Horgan puts one it, seconds left. #gaa2012

17:29The allocated two minutes of injury time are up
-
17:30officialgaa via Twitter Munster GAA Hurling Championship S-F@FT: Cork 0-24 Tipperary 1-22. It's all over, Tipp win by one. Great game of hurling. #gaa2012
-
17:30Aaron Tommy put some money on Waterford in the final,Mullane and Co must be licking their lips :P
-
17:32Full-time: Cork 0-24 Tipperary 1-22
-
17:32Tommy Aaron - You're not wrong there! Odd's won't be great I'd say....
-
17:32Should be another cracker
-
17:33Aaron I'm genuinely backing Waterford put some money on them you'll see ;)
-
17:33This is turning into a betting shop. And as such I feel entitled to a percentage.
-
17:35Declan Ryan is one relieved man. I'd imagine JBM is one dejected man (with a cool acronym-based nickname)
-
17:35Tommy Will put today's winnings on them then! It will be a smashing game for sure
-
17:36
-
17:39Aaron JBM's doing a decent job with the players he's got.
-
17:40He's definitely rejuvenated Cork since his return to the fold.
-
17:44Tommy My better half is now off out to buy a "hurley ball" she can hit with the hurl her mate gave her, Hurley ball...she's such a Dub....
-
17:45Well, this is awkward.....I'm from Ulster so....you know....your other half could probably hurl rings around me.....No doubt about it. Kilkenny aside, Munster is the hot-bed for hurling talent in Ireland.
-
17:51officialgaa via Twitter Thanks for following @officialgaa, and congratulations to Down, Mayo and Tipperary, who all reached provincial finals today. #gaa2012
-
17:53Tommy Eh - I'm a Kerry man originally so need to find fault wherever possible after last years...er upset...
-
17:54It must be so tough on you Kerry fans. Having to finish runner-up in every year that you don't win. When will Kerry fans catch a break?
-
17:58Tommy Exactly, you're dead right. Look at Jackie Healy Rae for instance. He was a polished athletic man until last year...devastating on all concerned.

18:04How can so little mean so much? One-point. One solitary score. It proved to be the difference between Tipperary and Cork in what was a thrilling Munster hurling championship semi-final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
One little point and yet it means so much. Tipperary progress to face a fired-up Waterford in the Munster decider and will garner belief that they are the team to challenge Kilkenny’s dominance this year. One little point is the reason that Cork will go to the qualifiers dejected, perhaps reflecting that they aren’t ready yet to make a serious All-Ireland challenge this year.
One little point proved to make a huge difference in Ulster too. Down’s one-point victory over Monaghan at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh propelled them to their first Ulster final since 2003 and perhaps helped to make a larger point. Ulster may not necessarily be only about Donegal or Tyrone. That one point victory perhaps underlines that Down’s appearance in the 2010 All-Ireland final was not a fluke. That one little point may have wider connotations for Monaghan too. It may mean a different Monaghan team entirely lining out in the Ulster championship next year. This year that one point means Monaghan must face the qualifiers.
One point too was crucial in Connacht. If you took that one point and multiplied it by 23 then Leitrim would have actually beaten Mayo. As it was they lost by 22 points and ruined my whole ‘one-point’ theme that I’ve been running with here.
Today provided two fantastic spectacles. Down’s spirited comeback in Ulster and a typically brilliant Munster hurling semi-final in Cork showed that despite sometimes seeking solace in soccer or attempting to revel in rugby, you just can’t beat gaelic games in the summer in terms of enjoying first-class sporting action. So don’t even dare to think about missing next week’s games, same time, same place and same website – www.irishtimes.com See you then.
