    Good afternoon.

Just two to go. And it's today you're all really excited for, right?

Forget the final. Who needs trophies and medals? The third place play-off is where it's really at. This is the one, this is what really matters.

Okay so none of that is true and in reality the only people too fussed about today are those who have an excuse to go to the pub to watch it and those live blogging it.

But you know what, this could actually be alright.

Whatever the occasion, Brazil against the Netherlands is a biggy. The hosts have got an opportunity to try and salvage the smallest bit of pride after their semi-final humiliation, while for the Dutch finishing third would be a brilliant response to the critics who didn't give them a hope before the tournament.

We're taking you from here until the end again, let's hope it's a good one.

Poor old Brazil. It would have been much better for everyone if they'd have lost on penalties to Chile. They'd probably be over that by now. They might never get over what happened against Germany.

Let's not kid ourselves, whatever happens today won't get near to repairing the damage the 7-1 will have caused. But it's a start. Today presents a chance for Brazil to play some attractive football and give a bit back to the fans who roared them into the last four in the first place.

Patrick Madden Would you like to see lots of Brazilians being really sad again? Thought so.

Nobody really wants to be in the third place play off. It's a match between two sides who have fallen one step short of appearing in the biggest game in football and really just want to get on the plane home.

But, there have been some good ones. And some great goals...

Louis Van Gaal has kept faith with a starting line-up and system which has gone 240 minutes of football without a goal. He's made one change, with Clasie replacing Nigel De Jong who recovered to play an hour of the semi final after being ruled out of the tournament.

It looks as though Big Phil is past the point of caring with Jo leading the line. Although in fairness, he surely can't do any worse than Fred. Maxwell finally gets a run out as well.

Patrick Madden Looks like Wesley Sneijder has pulled his hammy in the warm up and won't be playing.
  • 20:44

    Right then, here we go.

    The Dutch get things started.

  • 21:01
Patrick Madden Boos are ringing round as the Netherlands enjoy some early possession. Brazil have still got some supporters left, then.
  • 21:02
  • 21:02
Patrick Madden Robin Van Persie slips in Robben who is tugged back by Thiago Silva. He's shown a yellow, he was the last man and should be off, the ref bottled it.

  • 21:03
Patrick Madden Great penalty by Van Persie, in the top right corner.
  • 21:04
Patrick Madden If you want to set about restoring national pride that's not the best way to start really.
  • 21:06
Patrick Madden Chance for Brazil after Willian plays in Oscar down the left, but his cross is just out of the reach of his Chelsea team mate Ramires.
  • 21:09
    Patrick Madden

David Luiz plays a long diagonal and Jo is after it. He cuts it back to Ramires on the edge but he can't work room for a shot.

Up the other end Robben gets caught in possession and pulls back Thiago Silva and is shown a yellow.

  • 21:11
Patrick Madden Oscar plays down Maxwell who crosses towards Jo but Martins Indi outmuscles him.
  • 21:13
Patrick Madden This is being played at a very sedate pace. It's almost as if both sides don't want to be there...

  • 21:17
Patrick Madden It's getting worse. David Luiz has another stinker, heading the ball blind back into the area after a cross from the right. It falls straight to Daley Blind who has time to take a touch and then finds the roof of the net.
  • 21:18
  • 21:21
Patrick Madden Save! Oscar goes on a good, jinking run and shoots from the edge but Cillessen is down well.
  • 21:22
Patrick Madden David Luiz has had a rollocking off Thiago Silva for going AWOL, somebody needs to tell him.
  • 21:23
Patrick Madden Chance for Brazil after Oscar is played onside and he's through but his first touch is poor and the Dutch recover.
  • 21:25
  • 21:28
    Patrick Madden

Oscar drives down the channel and towards the box but is clipped by Martins Indi.

Free kick in a dangerous spot for Brazil a yard outside the area on the right. Oscar clips it in and Luiz meets it but glances his header well wide.

  • 21:29
Patrick Madden Close for the Dutch. Robben finds De Guzman in space on the edge but his shot is over.
  • 21:29

Patrick Madden Mexican wave time, eurgh.
  • 21:34
    Patrick Madden

Maicon is fouled on the edge of the box by Wijnaldum, another free kick in a good spot for Brazil.

It's a good ball towards the far post but Wijnaldum flicks it out for the games first corner, which the Dutch defend.

  • 21:34
  • 21:34
  • 21:36
  • 21:36
Patrick Madden Oscar's been Brazil's best player so far and he produces a great change of pace to burst past a few Dutch shirts and is tugged back by de Guzman, who is booked.
  • 21:38
    Patrick Madden

Now Oscar is fouled agan by de Guzman, this time close to the right touchline.

Oscar takes and close! Gustavo gets a touch on it at the nearpost and it skims across the six yard box with Luiz just unable to reach it.

  • 21:39
Patrick Madden Kuyt's taken a bash on the head and is receiving treatment. Don't worry, it hasn't affected his looks.
  • 21:41
Patrick Madden Save! The ball drops nicely for Van Persie on his left and he catches it well but Cesar makes a low save.
  • 21:44
    Patrick Madden

Ramires gets absolutely clobbered by Vlaar on the edge and the ref plays advantage but calls it back.

Free kick is in prime territory but Oscar hits the wall. Maxwell shoots miles over on the follow up.

Half time sub, Fernandinho coming on for Gustvo.

    And we're off again.

  • 22:08
Patrick Madden Ramires bursts through the middle and de Vrij gives away a corner. Brazil work it short but it breaks down and Robber bombs up the other end. He is fouled and takes the free kick quickly and he's in but his shot is blocked.
  • 22:10
Patrick Madden I am still here, there's just not an awful lot happening.
  • 22:12
    Patrick Madden

Van Persie is upended by Fernandinho who is shown a yellow card. The Dutch striker took a real tumble but he's back on his feet.

  • 22:14
Patrick Madden Another swap for Brazil, Paulinho's tournament comes to an end after he is replaced by Hernanes.
  • 22:16
Patrick Madden And Hernanes first action is clobbering Robben.
  • 22:17
Patrick Madden Ramires comes close for Brazil. He turns well on the edge and beats Vlaar but he drags his shot wide of the left hand post.
  • 22:18
  • 22:19
Patrick Madden Half an hour left in Brasilia.
  • 22:21
Patrick Madden Maicon is clipped by Blind as he bursts through the middle and Brazil are awarded a free kick which Luiz takes, it's a good effort but Cillessen catches comfortably.
  • 22:27
Patrick Madden Oscar is tackled in the box by Blind and crashes to the ground. The ref blows straight away but he gives the Dutch a free kick and books Oscar for diving. Looked a penalty, it's a good job for the ref it's the play off because he would get slaughtered for that if the game meant anything.
  • 22:28
Patrick Madden Blind has had to go off, replaced by Janmaat.
  • 22:28
  • 22:29
Patrick Madden Van Persie has spent half the tournament offside. This time he's yards off as he runs onto Wijnaldum's through ball.
  • 22:30
    Patrick Madden

Chance for the Dutch after Wijnaldum bursts through but the ball gets caught under his feet and then he gets in the way of Robben.

Last sub for Brazil, Hulk on for Ramires.

  • 22:30
    'Mourn' and a thumbs down!!
    "Mourn" and a thumbs down!!
  • 22:32
  • 22:33
    Patrick Madden

I'd say there was quite a lack of commitment.

Hulk has an opening but his shot is sliced high and wide.

  • 22:37
Patrick Madden Oscar has a chance to cross but concrete Ron blocks it and it goes for a corner. Brazil work it short and ir opens up for Oscar and he looks to curl it into the top right bin but overcooks it massively and it miles away.
  • 22:38
Patrick Madden Don't worry, there's only 10 minutes to go.
  • 22:40
Patrick Madden Another penalty shout, this time for the Netherlands. Kuyt lofts the ball into the box and Robben is felled as he controls it on his chest. Reckon it will take GBH for the ref to give the Dutch another penno.
  • 22:40
  • 22:42
  • 22:43
    Patrick Madden

Willian shows great feet on the far touchline and is fouled by de Guzman.

Hulk is over the free kick and curls it in, but Wijnaldum heads away strongly.

  • 22:44
Patrick Madden Close! The Dutch have a corner after a great break and Cesar comes to claim but Kuyt beats him to it, sending his header just wide.
  • 22:48
Patrick Madden Injury to Clasie means he's stretchered off and replaced by Joel Veltman.
  • 22:48
Patrick Madden There will be five minutes added time.

Patrick Madden BRAZIL 0 NETHERLANDS 3
  • 22:49
Patrick Madden Oh dear. Robben holds the ball up well and plays in Janmaat on the overlap. He cuts it back to Wijnaldum who slots home. So easy for the Dutch.
  • 22:51
Patrick Madden Vorm is coming on the Cillessen meaning every member of the Dutch squad has had a run out at the tournament.
  • 22:51
Dave M From Gresty Road to Tolka Park - the time honoured chant of "It's just like watching Brazil" isn't going to cut it next season.
  • 22:52
Patrick Madden I would definitey rather watch Crewe Alex than this Brazil side.

Eerily quiet on the full time whistle. It's been an awful end to the tournament for Brazil. They've shipped 10 goals in two games and their reputation is in shreds.

It wasn't a great game, but I don't think anybody was expecting much. The Netherlands made it look very easy and will be pleased with third spot.

Thanks for joining today, sorry it wasn't much fun.

See you tomorrow? Heard there's a footy game on.
