    David Moyes has been sacked by Manchester United after just 10 months in charge and replaced by Ryan Giggs. The club are believed to be interested in putting Giggs in charge temporarily until the end of the season.

    Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn is calling for "robust collaboration" over issue of religious instruction.

    Mr Quinn has thrown down a challenge to the Catholic Church to give concrete examples of how its schools can be “genuinely inclusive” for children of all faiths and none.

    Honours leaving certificate maths will become a minimum requirement for entry into teacher training, Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn said today.

    In a comment which caused a rumble of disapproval among the 750 delegates at the annual conference of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, Mr Quinn referred to his “highly feminised audience and profession”, and remarked honours maths was not currently a requirement for the profession.

    He said “evidence-based research” had shown “women” who did well in maths at the junior cycle dropped higher level maths because it was not a requirement for initial teacher training.

    BBC news are reporting the banner “The Chosen One” that became the focus point of David Moyes’s struggles as Manchester United manager may end up in a museum.

    The banner was made after Sir Alex Ferguson appointed Moyes as his successor last year.

    A woman is in a serious condition in hospital following an incident yesterday afternoon in which her car was hijacked.

    She was assaulted by a man and a woman outside her apartment complex at Argyle House, Serpentine Avenue, Ballsbridge in Dublin, at about 2pm and her car was driven away.

    Internships have become a rite of passage for graduates desperate to get their careers started.
    Daithí de Buitléir (23), from Kilkenny, said his first internship was a paid stint with a multinational corporation in Dublin.
    “There was definitely an attitude that you’re here as a form of cheap labour. I was catapulted into this culture of a dog-eat-dog world. I would say I ended up becoming afraid,”

    Funeral arrangements are being put in place for a young Irishman who died in an Alpine climbing incident in Liechtenstein last week.

    Eoin Deasy (25), a secondary school teacher who was from Ballinlough in Cork city, died after he fell while hiking along the Fürstensteig route in the Alpine Rätikon mountain range last Thursday.
