Welcome to the Irish Times live blog on the final round of the US Masters at Augusta National. John O'Sullivan here and I'll be taking through to about midnight to find out who will be crowned champion and extend their wardrobe by one green blazer in the 76th staging of the Masters.

Well that's not strictly true because champions are obliged to leave the green jacket on the premises: in the champions' locker room to be precise.

In the interest of full disclosure I backed Phil Mickelson at 11/1 before the start of the tournament.

  • 19:17
I don't feel any conflict of interest, although I'd love to see Padraig Harrington claim a fourth major. To do so he'll probably need to shoot a 63 or 64. The good news is that someone had already done that, the American Bo van Pelt. His 64 included a hole-in-one at the par three, 16th.

Rory McIlroy was having a great day with Ulster beating Munster at Thomond Park in the Heineken Cup quarter-final and Manchester United winning 2-0 against QPR........that is until he got to the golf course.

The young Northern Ireland golfer had bogeys at the 1st, fifth, seventh and 10th with just a single birdie at the ninth and currently lies in a tie for 40th on three over par.
  • 19:28
Graeme McDowell, another United fan, is doing a little bit better. Playing alongside McIlroy he is one under for his round standing on the 11th tee and one over for the tournament to leave him in a tie for 26th place overall.
  • 19:31
Tiger Woods is in the water at 13 but has played an exquisite chip and may save his par. He's one over for the day and four over in terms of the tournament.

A first glimpse of Padraig Harrington and he rolls a beautifully weighted putt across the first green to about two and a half feet.

Bubba Watson is on the first tee and given his length he'll probably be asking his caddy for a wedge for his second shot.
  • 19:32
Pictures of Phil Mickelson on the practice putting green and he looks pretty relaxed. Mind you never heard of anybody making bogeys there.
  • 19:35
Woods saves par on 13 and the howls of anguish of about five minutes ago have been replaced by a 'sunnier' disposition. No sign of his caddy who's probably still picking up the toys on the fairway.

Lee Westwood birdies the second to make up for the bogey he had at the first.
  • 19:38
McIlroy misses the green by a margin on the par three, 12th but chips nicely to about three feet.

Bubba is not a happy camper. He screams 'mud-ball' after he hits his second shot to the first hole. It lands on the green but it'll be a good two putt from where his ball has finished.

Mickelson is wearing beige, for those of you watching in black and white.
  • 19:41
Mickelson is on his way to the first tee, sporting his happy face. If you think this blog is favouring Lefty a little too much just wait until he makes a birdie.

Bubba's mood isn't going to improve after that first putt on one; he's left it about six feet short.

Harrington chips to about five feet with his third shot on the par five, second hole. Birdie opportunity.
  • 19:43
The announcer on the first tee doesn't stand on ceremony. "Fore please," Phil Mickelson to play. No footage of the leader Peter Hanson's tee shot. Now that's not playing fair from the American broadcasters.
  • 19:45
Harrington holes for birdie. He's now five under and four behind the leader, Peter Hanson.

Bubba misses his par putt on the first and drops back to the same mark as the Irishman.
  • 19:48
Finally some footage of Hanson. He's just been told by his caddie "a nice, solid swing; nothing fancy." The upshot? He misses the first green right. It was more of a nervous steer than a shot struck with authority.
  • 19:49
Paul Lawrie's putt from off the green at the back of the third hole, shaves the edge of the cup but rambles on and he's got a Denis Wise (nasty five footer) coming back.
  • 19:51
Ian Poulter and Sean O'Hair have improved their positions by one to three under for the tournament.
  • 19:55
Harrington has played a gorgeous approach to the third. Another birdie opportunity, this one from about eight feet.

Hanson had gone 17 straight holes without a bogey but he's had one now at the first .

Louis Oosthuizen has just holed his second shot to the par five, second hole for an ALBATROSS (Double eagle if your American) to go 10 under and a two shot lead in the Masters.

  • 19:59
Unsurprisingly it's the first ALBATROSS on the second hole in the history of the Masters. The great American golfer Gene Sarazen managed it at the 15th hole in 1935. It was dubbed 'the shot heard around the world.'
  • 20:00
Apparently there's been four ALBATROSSES at Augusta.

Harrington watches his birdie putt slide by. He needs everything to drop.
  • 20:02

    1935: Gene Sarazen (15th)
    1967: Bruce Devlin (8th)
    1994: Jeff Maggert (13th)
    2012: Louis Oosthuizen (2nd)
  • 20:03
Dave They showed Hansons tee shot here on CBS...
  • 20:05
O'Hair birdies the fifth (-4), Watson the second (-6)
  • 20:07
Lee Westwood continues to look like the proverbial rabbit in headlights on the greens. He's on three under.
  • 20:09
Defending champion Charl Schwartzel has finished on eight over for the tournament.

Harrington has missed the fourth green right with his tee shot. Looks like he's in the bunker. It'll be a tough one.
  • 20:10
McIlroy double bogeyed the 11th and has now slipped to six over for the tournament. He's managed to par 12 and 13.
  • 20:14
Hanson makes a par on the second but it'll feel like a dropped shot on the reachable par five.

Oosthuizen drove it in the trees at the third, through the back of the green with his second but has holed from 10 feet, via the side door for a brilliant par. It looks like being his day and tournament at this early stage.

Mickelson can only par the second too.
  • 20:15
Great bunker shot and six foot putt for par from Harrington; super scrambling after a poor tee shot.
  • 20:19
The sartorially challenged Ian Poulter (bright yellow shoes) has managed another birdie on the sixth to go to four under. Woods is five over playing the 17th and McDowell is back to level for the tournament with five to play.
  • 20:21
Adam Scott hole-in-one at the 16th. The word jammy, springs to mind, after seeing the route it took.

Harrington another glorious iron shot and another very good birdie opportunity.
  • 20:22
It takes the affable Australian Scott to three under for the tournament.
  • 20:24
Hanson's missed the green at the third and watched as his ball came back down the slope to 30 paces short of the green. His chip goes 15 feet past.

    Westwood birdies the sixth (-4)
  • 20:27
Mickelson watched another birdie chance go abegging. My money's too much of a weight to bear for him.

Harrington's birdie putt had a fair bit of break and it slides by. At least he's giving himself chances.........but he's got to start taking them.
  • 20:32
Hanson misses his par putt and drops back to seven under, while the leader Oosthuizen also gives a shot back. He couldn't rescue an errant tee shot on the fourth by getting up and down and is back to nine under.

    -9 Oosthuizen
    -8 Mickelson
    -7 Hanson

Mickelson has just seen his tee shot on the par three fourth career or a railing in the stand at the back of the green. Goodness knows where it has gone.
  • 20:33
Sorry I said the grandstand was at the back it's actually on the left. He missed the green by miles.
  • 20:35
Did I mention that Scott was slightly jammy on the 16th well he's just chipped in from a ridiculously difficult angle for birdie on the 17th (-4)
  • 20:37
Mickelson's found his ball and that's not good news. It's in the jungle.

McDowell has birdied the 16th and is now two under for the tournament, an excellent effort from the 2010 US OPen champion.
  • 20:38
Padraig Harrington take a bow! He's holed from just off the par three, sixth green with his putter. He's not just three behind.
  • 20:42
Mickelson had a slash at his ball and it's still not visible. He's played it right handed and his third shot has moved the ball out of the munchies.

Westwood moves to five under with a birdie at the seventh.

Mickelson tried to play a flop shot off a lie that was probably firmer than concrete. He's moved it to the bunker. His Masters challenge could end here. He plays a brilliant bunker shot and will hole out for a six and three dropped shots, moving him back to five under.
  • 20:46
Woods finishes on five over. He says that the pin positions are relatively easy and that someone's going to get hot and make a run.

Hanson has managed a second par at the fourth. Mickelson would offer him a fortune to buy that three.
  • 20:48
Mickelson has just caned it down the middle of the fifth. Hanson's in the semi-rough.

Never mind all that, Harrington's just hit another sumptuous iron shot to about four and a half feet at the seventh.
  • 20:53
Harrington misses. It was a tricky one, downhill. He wasn't happy about the line and it showed with the stroke. His iron play is absolutely brilliant and if he can just up his conversion rate on the greens, he's going to be a genuine contender.

    -9 Oosthuizen
    -7 Watson, Hanson
    -6 Harrington, Kuchar
    -5 Westwood, Mickelson
  • 20:55
Adam Scott talking about his hole-in-one on the 16th. "It was a perfect number, a full seven iron."
  • 20:57
Oosthuizen has just holed from the apron/rough on the back of the sixth green for a par. That's two brilliant saves with the blade. It can't continue, can it?
  • 20:59
McIlroy has birdied the 17th and is five over the tournament.
  • 21:01
No player that has had a treble bogey during the tournament has gone on to win the US Masters. Lefty's had two so far.
  • 21:03
Kuchar moves to seven under with a birdie on the seventh. Nice symmetry there.

Westwood drops a shot at the par five eighth despite almost holing from 80 feet.

Poulter is upwardly mobile again with a birdie on the ninth (-5).
  • 21:05
McIlroy signs for a 76 (+6) while his playing partner and good friend, McDowell posts a superb 68 to finish the tournament on two under.
  • 21:09
Oosthuizen lobbed his ALBATROSS ball to a member of the gallery at the second green and already someone has bid $20,000 for it if the South African goes on to win the tournament.

After his heroics from off the green at the fifth with the putter, he fails to convert a good birdie chance on the par three sixth.

Apologies McIlroy finishes on +5, same mark as Woods.
  • 21:11
Harrington two putts the eighth for a par. Longish birdie chance, he produces a good pace putt; stone dead.
  • 21:19
Kuchar misses a good birdie chance on eight. About seven feet. Along with Harrington he's playing the best golf tee to green. It's all bubbling up nicely.
  • 21:21
Bubba really does hit the ball further than some people go on holidays. He's just smashed a ball a country mile with his second to the par five eighth after catching sand off the tee.
  • 21:24
Patrick Cantlay, the world amateur number one, is a fitting winner of the low amateur in the Masters (+7).

Harrington, in trouble on the ninth, he's got a 20 foot, 'down the marble counter-top,' putt to save par.
  • 21:27
Hanson's just skulled a spectator with his tee shot on eight. Nasty and the spectator, while moving, is lying on the ground.
  • 21:30
Kuchar's just knocked it into the gallery on nine after being in the trees off the tee. Bubba's missed a shortish putt on eight for birdie; lips out and he taps the green in frustration. He taps in and then stares out the spike mark.
  • 21:31
Harrington bogeys the ninth to drop back into a tie for fifth on five under.
  • 21:33
McIlroy's grace in defeat once again shines through in his post round interview. A sense of humour is important.
  • 21:38
Mickelson scares the hole for eagle with a flop shot, on the par five, eighth. Has about a four and a half foot putt for birdie.

Kuchar double bogeys the ninth to slip back to five under, three putting from five feet, something that is all too familiar in the world of the casual golfer.
  • 21:42
Hanson was holing putts from different post codes yesterday and so far in the final round can't buy one. He's still right in the mix though, something he'll need to remind himself as he heads towards the turn.

Mickelson drops his birdie putt and is back to minus six, three behind Oosthuizen. The South African is in a bit of trouble on the ninth facing the same putt that Harrington had: ridiculously quick, down the hill. It's really a question of where the one back will be from.
  • 21:44
The answer is two and a half feet underneath the hole. Great touch from the tournament leader.
  • 21:49
BBC salivating at the prospect of a Lee Westwood charge. He's four under and has just hit a fine tee shot to about 14 feet on the ar three, 12th. He'll need to start galloping quickly.
  • 21:52
    -9 Oosthuizen
    -7 Watson, Hanson
    Harrington, Kuchar, Poulter
  • 21:53
Harrington has just fired a wonderfully brave iron shot into the 11th, flirting with the pond on the left. It's paid off though. He's another makeable birdie chance.
  • 21:56
If the Dubliner can hole this one it might just give him the impetus to re-produce the brilliance he displayed on the back nine yesterday. Everyone is through the turn, let the Masters begin in earnest.
  • 21:58
Padraig's had to watch another chance (eight feet) go abegging. Pity. He won't expect everyone ahead of him to falter so he has to bridge the gap with birdies.
  • 22:00
Perfect timing with that last remark. Oosthuizen has bogeyed 10 and is now just one clear of Watson and Hanson on eight under.
  • 22:09
Westwood moves to five under with a birdie on the 13th. Harrington watches another birdie putt slide by on the par three, 12th. He's got to stay mentally strong with two par fives to come, the 13th and 15th.
  • 22:13
Harrington in the pine needles off the tee on the 13th. Didn't get the ball to turn as he wanted: likely lay-up.
  • 22:16
Kuchar birdies 12 to move to six under. Eight players within three shots.
  • 22:18
Mickelson comes within a gnat's whisker of putting it in the pond on 11. Having hit his second shot he immediately turned to his caddie and asked where the ball had come to rest. The answer is on the apron. He hit a big cut and it was almost a fatal wound to his chances.
  • 22:19
Westwood birdies the 14th to go to six under; the ranks are massing behind Oosthuizen, who hits a nice shot to the par three 12th, right over the pin.
  • 22:21
Ken Brown's course tips offer a decent insight; a nice sideshow to the action.
  • 22:24
Bubba's been clumsy with the putter from the back of the 12th. He's got about 10 feet back for his par.

Harrington's played peek-a-boo with the trees and hits a low runner from the pine needles. It's ugly but effective.
  • 22:25
Bubba bogeys. Back to six. Harrington's chip a little strong. He''s about 15 feet left for birdie. He'll be very disappointed with that one.
  • 22:28
Harrington makes par on 13. He's static while rivals move forward.

    -8 Oosthuizen
    -7 Hanson
    Mickelson, Westwood, Poulter, Kuchar
  • 22:29
Westwood reaches the par five 15th in two; he's got nine feet for eagle and a chance to move to eight under and a tie for the lead.
  • 22:30
Hanson has just had a shank at the par three 12th. Recognised the swing and contact immediately.
  • 22:33
Westwood's putt circumnavigates the hole without touching it. Tap-in birdie. Minus seven.
  • 22:35
Would any of the contenders take eight under now and walk in?
  • 22:37
Well definitely not Lefty but one or two others might. He two putts for par on the 12th, looking a little exasperated.

Kuchar birdies the 13th to go to seven under. Hanson heads in the other direction with a dropped shot at 12 (-6)
  • 22:40
Oosthuizen as he prepares to hit his second shot to the 13th: "trust the shot." He didn't and tugs it long and left to the rough at the back.

Hate to say it but Harrington's just hit another beautiful iron shot to the 14th. Come on he's got to hole one. He's definitely overdue.
  • 22:41
Finishes on the lip. It bounced on contact. A lesser man would be cursing the golfing gods; audibly.
  • 22:43
Oosthuizen almost chips in for eagle on 13. It grabs a bit of lip on the way past. Odds on birdie to move to nine under
  • 22:46
Bubba Watson birdies the 13th to go back to seven under but Oosthuizen drops his first birdie putt of the day to move out to nine under.
  • 22:48
    -9 Oosthuizen
    Westwood, Kuchar, Watson
    Hanson, Poulter
  • 22:51
Mickelson glorious second shot to the par five 13th; 15 feet for eagle.

STATO: The winner of the Masters has played in the last pairing on the final day in 19 of the last 21 stagings of the tournament.
  • 22:53
Thanks be to goodness, Harrington holes from six feet for birdie on the 15th. He's six under but will probably need to birdie two of the last three holes to have an outside chance really.
  • 22:55
How did that stay out? Mickelson's eagle putt shaves the edge but it is a tap-in birdie (-7).
  • 22:58
Kuchar shouts "come on baby, be good" after hitting a rescue club second shot to the 15th. Almost the second Albatross of the day. He's got about five or six feet for eagle.

Harrington 25 feet away on 16.
  • 23:00
Watson goes birdie, birdie with his second in succession on the 14th (-8).

    Harrington's birdie putt...........................slides by.
  • 23:02
Bubba's just hit it three miles down the 15th with his day-glo pink driver.
  • 23:06
Kuchar holes from four feet for eagle on the 15th to join Oosthuizen at the top of the leaderboard on nine under.
  • 23:07
It's sweaty palm time. Oosthuizen misses the 15th green right in two. It's be tough to get up and down for birdie from there. Watson on in two and will have an eagle putt from under the hole.
  • 23:09
Kuchar's just blocked his tee shot on the par three 16th. It would be signalled a wide in cricket. He'll have to chip or putt down a steep slope.
  • 23:10
Poulter three putts the 18th to finish on five under for the tournament.
  • 23:15
A tight looking putting stroke from Bubba. He misses his eagle chance from 25 feet and has about two and a half left for birdie. He makes it (-9)

Oosthuizen rolls in another clutch putt from seven feet for birdie to regain the lead. (-10)

Westwood birdies 18 to go to eight under and post the clubhouse target.
  • 23:17
Kuchar fails to get up and down on 16 and drops back to eight under.
  • 23:18
Mickelson 222 yards second to the 15th. three minute conversation with caddie. Five iron chosen. Put back. Chosen.
  • 23:19
Lefty's caddie Bones tells him to take his time. The discussion is ongoing.

Watson in to six feet on the 16th.
  • 23:19
Mickelson finds the green, 30 feet from pin.
  • 23:22
    -10 Oosthuizen
    -9 Watson
    - 8
    Westwood, Kuchar,

    Harrington, Hanson
  • 23:24
Oosthuizen two putts for par on the 16th but Bubba's fourth birdie in a row takes him into a tie for the lead with his playing partner.
  • 23:26
    -10 Oosthuizen, Watson
    - 8
    Westwood, Kuchar,

    Harrington, Hanson
  • 23:27
Watson just hoiked one way left with his driver on the 17th. Mickelson (-8) and Hanson (-7) birdie the 15th. Harrington has a 10 foot putt for par on the 18th after catching the front greenside bunker with his second shot.
  • 23:29
    -10 Oosthuizen, Watson
    - 8
    Westwood (F), Kuchar, Mickelson

  • 23:33
Harrington three putts the home green for a double bogey to drop from six under and finish on four under. It was a travesty given the way he played for most of the round. If he'd putted like he did for the first three days he would have gone close to winning the tournament: a real pity.
  • 23:33
    -10 Oosthuizen, Watson
    - 8
    Westwood (F), Kuchar, Mickelson
    -4 Harrington
  • 23:37
Oosthuizen great bunker shot on the 17th. About three and a half feet left for par.

Mickelson makes par on the 16th.

Watson hits the corner of the hole, at speed, in trying for a fifth birdie in a row.
  • 23:38
Harrington (72) will finish in a tie for eighth place as things stand.
  • 23:39
Oosthuizen and Watson head for the 18th tee tied on 10 under par. Mickelson is on eight under on the 17th, Kuchar (-8) has a 25 footer on the home green for birdie.
  • 23:41
Watson booms one down the middle of the fairway and Oosthuizen responds in kind. Game on.
  • 23:46
Harrington admitted: "I was very pleased with how close I hit it all day. I would struggle to believe that anyone gave themselves as many birdie chances as I did. I thought I could win it right up to the 16th. I was between clubs for my second on the 18th and didn't commit to the shot. It was a disappointing way to finish but there are so many positives to take away from the week."
  • 23:47
Advantage Bubba after the second shots to 18. Oosthuizen has a lightning quick one down the green while Watson is coming across rather than down
  • 23:48
John On a road trip from Florida to new jersey and enjoyed the great commentary as could not watch on tv.
  • 23:49
Oosthuizen only has to sneeze to see putt travel the 30 feet to the hole.
  • 23:50
Four feet by. Very fine control of pace.
  • 23:52
Watson nudges it down to 10 inches and holes out. Oosthuizen has a putt for par to tie the American left-hander.
  • 23:52
Nerves of steel from the 2010 British Open champion.
  • 23:56
Mickelson (-8) and Hanson (-7) are the only players left on the golf course. The American has to hole his second shot and given his drive has gone into the trees; unlikely. Time to get ready for the playoff. Watson v Oosthuizen. Sudden death.
  • 23:57
Mickelson's found the green but needed to hole it.
  • 23:59
He's probably thinking about that treble bogey on the par three, fourth, or more probably trying not to. Credit to Hanson he hung in there when lesser men would have folded completely.
  • 00:02
Mickelson (72) misses with his birdie putt finishing in a tie for third place with Lee Westwood, Matt Kuchar and Hanson; the Swede making a birdie on the home green.

Watson and Oosthuizen are being transported back to the 18th tee and the playoff will begin shortly.
  • 00:09
Both players find the fairway with their tee shots.
  • 00:11
There's no conversation as they walk six feet apart to play their second shots.
  • 00:13
Oosthuizen 140 yards. Knocks it to 18 feet.
  • 00:13
Bubba flys it past the pin and spins it back off the slope. About nine feet.
  • 00:14
Guest Thanks for the great commentary on holidays at the moment in Hungary from Nicky Sean & Laura Come on South Africa!!!!!
  • 00:16
    Oosthuizen stalking his putt.
  • 00:17
Kisses the edge of the hole. Thought it was in. So did the South African.
  • 00:17
Bubba has a slightly different angle but will have got a read from Oosthuizen's putt.
  • 00:17
    10 feet from Masters glory.
  • 00:18
He's touched the other side of the hole. The playoff goes on.
  • 00:19
The players are now making their way to the 10th tee. No coffee left in the Irish Times. It's pure adrenaline.
  • 00:20
    Bubba with the honour again.
  • 00:20
He's pulled it right into the trees.
  • 00:21
Oosthuizen's gone into the trees too. Amazing.
  • 00:23
DonersD fantastic commentary thanks to all in the IT
  • 00:25
Oosthuizen's caught a break and rebounded off a tree. Watson's hit it miles and he appears stymied by the trees. May have to chip out.
  • 00:25
The South African has come up short of the green. About six paces from the front apron.
  • 00:26
Watson works the ball well but if he gets this on the green it'll be one of the all-time great shots.
  • 00:28
It is. Absolutely magnificent. He hit a massive draw and it's come to rest about 10 feet right and under the hole. Pressure back on Oosthuizen.
  • 00:28
Given his lie and the angle, Watson showed great courage to take on that shot. He's been rewarded.
  • 00:30
Oosthuizen is a little heavy handed with the chip and it runs through to the back apron. It may be him to putt first.
  • 00:31
It is. It's about 15 feet with a significant break.
  • 00:31

How did that stay out. A brilliant effort but it didn't drop. Bubba has two putts from 10 feet to become the Masters champion.

That second shot to the second playoff hole will be replayed over and over again. Technique and courage in equal amounts.

Not sure Bubba's swing will inspire a generation or if it does it'll certainly keep chiropractors in business. But to go with that idiosyncratic swing and the sheer power is a great touch and imagination. He's a maverick and that's certainly no harm for the sport.

He lost the US PGA Championship in a playoff and now he's claimed his first major in one.

The final round of the 2012 US Masters in a few sentences? Oosthuizen's albatross on the second, Mickelson's treble bogey on the par three fourth and Watson's stunning second shot on the second playoff hole. It's green jacket time in the Butler Cabin.

Watson very emotional when asked about the son he adopted recently. He's doing well to hold back the tears. Comes across as a very nice guy.

Well that's it from the US Masters. Thanks for your company and comments. It's straight to the driving range in the morning to swing it like Bubba, the 2012 US Masters champion.
