14:17Hello, Carl O'Malley here, welcome to the Irish Times' live text commentary on the All-Ireland hurling final between champions Tipperary and living legends Kilkenny. The third-in-a-row between these two sides promises to be a belter, so join us here for a blow-by-blow account from 3pm. Throw-in is 3.30pm
-
14:32Marty Morrisey is embarrassing a teenage Tipperary girl on d'telly, by having a half cut crowd sing Happy Birthday to her. She holds her head in her hands - for the first and only time today, she and her Premier County faithful will hope.
-
14:36Irish Times GAA professor Seán Moran's prediction is a narrow Tipp win. Feel free to give us your thoughts over the next few hours, preferrably sooner rather than later. There's no point predicting a Cats win when they're three points up with a minute to go. (That's not my prediction, by the way).
-
14:52The Galway minors have won their final against Dublin on a scoreline of 1-21 to 1-12. Shane Maloney scored a stunning 1-09 in that game, while, perhaps ominously for the Cats, the Dublin goalscorer was Ciaran Kelly.
Congrats to the young Tribesmen! -
15:07We're under half an hour from showtime now, and rain is threatening to dampen spirits. Let's hope it doesn't dilute the quality of hurling. The teams are out for their warm-up.
"There's no turning back now", according to Michael Lyster, as if anyone would want to. -
15:11No changes to either team as yet, so the line-ups are as follows:
KILKENNY: D Herity; P Murphy, N Hickey, J Tyrrell; T Walsh, B Hogan, JJ Delaney; M Fennelly, M Rice; E Brennan, R Power, H Shefflin; C Fennelly, E Larkin, R Hogan.
TIPPERARY: B Cummins; P Stapleton, P Curran, M Cahill; J O’Keeffe, C O’Mahony, P Maher; G Ryan, S McGrath; S Callanan, N McGrath, P Maher; E Kelly, J O’Brien, L Corbett. -
15:17
-
15:17In case anyone is wondering how last year's final went, here's a brief summary. Not included, of course, is Henry Shefflin's knee injury that saw him leave the field after 12 minutes.
-
15:19
-
15:19That was a tough day for the Cats. Some took it on the chin. Others took it all a bit to seriously.
-
15:24President Mary McAleese is on the pitch greeting the players. She's sporting a pink ensemble, careful not insult anyone. One assumes there are few among those with hurls who are used to wearing pink. Is there a Paul Galvin of hurling? Not sure

-
15:30Minutes away now, as the anthem rings out around Haedquarters
-
15:321 min: Here we go, for the third year running. Game on. Kilkenny asking the eary questions. Fennelly awarded a free in and the Cats will have shot at goal.
-
15:32King Henry stands over it and fires over from 30m out. First blood Kilkenny.
Jackie Tyrell is marking Lar Corbett at the other end. -
15:344 min: Lar's first touch and he is shunted in touch. Kilkenny come again and Eoin Larkin is dispossessed brilliantly as lines up a shot at goal.
-
15:35Larkin not be denied, however, and he fires his first score. Cats are two up.
-
15:36Tipp getting nothing at the other end and are being swarmed by Kilkenny defence. Noel McGrath has a sideline cut, however. Very tight angle.
-
15:387 min: Tipp have a 65. Bit of argy bargy between JJ Delaney and Seamus Callanan there. Delaney's been putting himself about a fair bit already. Eoin Kelly misses the 65 from the touchline.
-
15:39Lovely take and turn by Callanan but he's stopped again by the Kilkenny defence. Tipp getting no time on the ball here. Kilkenny look pumped up.
-
15:4110 min: Tipp working hard just to cear their lines here, it keeps coming back, but a booming effort from Tipp puts Cats goalkeeper Herity under pressure. Free out after he's hit hard in the square.
-
15:4211 min: Line ball up to Larkin and it finds it's way across to Richie Hogan, who cuts inside and fires a third point. Kilkenny well on top at the moment.
-
15:43Big scare for Tipp as Paul Curran lifts the sliotar off the line after Larkin flicked Hogan's effort past Cummins. That was a let off for the champions!
-
15:44Richie Power in on the act now. The Cats are rampant. Tipp, nowhere to be seen. Lovely point from Power, when under pressure.
-
15:4615th minute now and the Tommy Walsh brilliantly claims a highball and fires it up Henry. His second point and Kilkenny's fifth. This is worrying for Tipp no, the need to get a score on the board
-
15:4716 min: And there it is from Noel McGrath. Nice point off his left.
-
15:48
-
15:48Will it change things, though?
-
15:49Maybe, free in to Tipp, from the left-hand sideline. Eoin Kelly over it, head bowed. Beautiful point from Kelly, just inside the post. Three in it.
-
15:54It's all boiled over here and referee Brian Gavin needs treatment after getting a bloody nose from what looked like Tommy Walsh's hurl. Unintentional, of course, but he's in the wars and is getting his nose patched up now. There would have been some odds on the man in black getting the first whack from Walsh.
-
15:5423 min: He's back up and running but not without significant repairs. He's wearing what would be referred to in horsey circles as a nose band now.
-
15:5524 min: Eddie Brennan opens the gap after a nice run by Power.
-
15:56Free out for Tipp and Brendan Maher is being prepared on the sideline. They need a bit of his guile.
-
15:5827 min: Cummins gathers and clears Shefflin's effort after great work from Eddie Brennan. He could have done better there, Henry.
-
15:58Brendan Maher is set to replace John O'Keeffe in the halfback line.
-
16:00Power has lost his helmet as Maher enters the fray and O'Keeffe makes way. Maher over to mark Shefflin straight away.
-
16:01Still three points in it but Conor O'Mahony is standing over a Tipp free. Fired in and there's another foul on Bonner Maher. An scoreable chance here for Eoin Kelly.
-
16:0231 min: Kelly takes his third point and there is just two in it. Amazing really considering the opening quarter of this game.
-
16:0433 min: Shefflin lines up another free and takes his score for a three-point lead wtih two minutes to go. There must be plenty of injury time considering Walsh's intervention earlier on.
-
16:05Brilliant mopping up Walsh again, he's having a stormer back there. Paddy Stapleton is down clutching his after an awkward looking collision. He's back up though after a bit of treatment
-
16:06GOAL: The line ball from Shefflin to Hogan, who finds Fennelly on the burst throught he middle and he fires it home.
-
16:07Eoin Kelly repsonds but the Cats lead by five again. Big goal from Fennelly, his first in Championship hurling.
-
16:0837 min: Michael Rice adds his first to open the gap further.
-
16:09Lar Corbett gets what must be his first touch since being hoofed into touch by JJ Delaney in the first few minutes. He's been anonymous so far. Remarkable, really.
-
16:10Patrick Bonner Maher denied by Walsh as he lined up a goal attempt. Walsh is having a massive game for the Cats. But Wait, free in.
-
16:11Kelly gets his fourth. That came after Noel Hickey tripped Maher on his way through, which allowed Walsh to clean up. Good spot by the ref. His nose is in bits but there's nothing wrong with his eyesight.
-
16:13That's it. Halftime and there's five points in it, thanks largely to Michael Fennelly's goal. Last year, Kilkenny trailed by one at this stage. It all looks very different now but there're 35 minutes to come.
-

Tipperary's Padraic Maher and Kilkenny goalscorer Colin Fennelly during the first half. - (Lorraine O'Sullivan/Inpho) -
16:29It maybe hasn't quite lived up to the billing with, as the lads in the RTE studio remarked, the intensity dropping after the referee got a crack of Walsh's hurl.
Feel free to give us your thoughts, folks, via the comment section, or tweet me on @carlomalley -
16:30We're back on. Seamus Callanan and Shane McGrath are off for Tipp. Changes for Kilkenny too, I'll get them in a second.
-
16:32It's Benny Dunne and Pa Bourke on for Tipp and the latter fires narrowly wide early in this second half.
-
16:32Dunne, however, makes no mistake from the right. Immediate impact there from both subs, even if Bourke missed his effort.
-
16:32Proud Cat It may not have Carl.. but that could lend itself to a better second half. There's everything to play for and not much in it. Still think the Cats will take it
-
16:3340 min: Shefflin repsonds with his fourth point. Patrick Maher stopped by JJ Delaney for a 65.
-
16:35Eoin Kelly points to close the gap to four. 41 minutes gone.
-
16:36Colin Fennelly gets his first point from way out. Lovely score from distance off his left.
-
16:37Richie Hogan shoots wide. He's scored one but has been relatively quiet. Though, of course, he did assist Fennelly's goal. Richie Power fields and fires another point.
-
16:3845 min: Power wins another free as he looks for space around the 45. Shefflin adds another from in front of the posts. It's all a bit similar to the first half for Tipp.
-
16:39They respond. Conor O'Mahony comes up from the back to do the honours. One point from play from the Tipp forwards so far. That ain't good.
-
16:41Jackie Tyrell bounces two Tipp men out of the way before punching the air as the whistle sounds in the mistaken belief the free has gone his way. It hasn't. Eoin Kelly scores for Tipp.
-
16:43GOAL! What a goal from Richie Hogan. Eddie Brennan flies through the middle with ball on his hurl, handpass to Hogan as he peels off his man. One touch on the hurl and fired into the top corner. A fantastic strike worthy of any final.
-
16:45That was similar to Corbett's third last year, except it was further out and better placed. An amazing bit of stick work from Hogan. Seven points in it. 51 minutes gone
-
16:46Hogan is hauled down and Shefflin fires another. It's all looking a bit ominous for the champions.
-
16:4754 min: Noel McGrath reduces the deficit from a sideline cut. Tight angle, there. An impressive score but they need a few more.
-
16:49GOAL TIPP!! And how. It's Pa Bourke, who takes a pass from Corbett and fires from distance through Herity.
-
16:50Goalkeeper should have done better there, perhaps, but it doesn't matter now.
-
16:5157 min: Lar Corbett lets another chance slip. Tipp need him to find his range. It's now or never.
-
16:52Frantic finale now. Four points in it. TJ Reid is replacing Eddie Brennan for Kilkenny.
-
16:53Make that a five-point lead. Michael Fennelly scores another. He's having a big game.
-
16:5510 minutes left now. It's bubbling up nicely now. Sideline ball to Tipp. Noel McGrath fires it in but Herity clears as far as Delaney who helps it on. Great defence there.
-
16:56McGrath strikes back, though, as he fires one over when unmarked. Brian Cody thinks it was picked off the ground. Nobody's listening.
-
16:58Tipp are busting a gut here to get back in this now. Kelly points another free and the gap is three.
-
16:59Michael Fennelly, however, is hauled down by David Young, greco-roman style. Shefflin makes it a four point-game again.
-
17:00Benny Dunne and Pa Bourke bulldoze their way down the right, but the free is awarded out for either overcarrying or throwing. Danger averted, for now.
-
17:02Misplaced pass from Shefflin is gobbled up by Brendan Maher and Bonner Maher is taken down. Kelly points for the eighth time.
-
17:03Every time they score, Kilkenny respond. It's TJ Reid this time. Just on the pitch for Brennan. Straight down the other end and PA Bourke is hooked as he sets his sights on goal and who else but TJ Reid is back to clear the danger. A point at one end a clearance at the other. Quite a shift he's putting in.
-
17:0470 min: Two minute of added time. Tipp look for the net, but there's no way through.
-
17:05Gearoid Ryan fires one over the bar, however. Just a goal in it. One minute left. Where are ya, Lar?
-
17:05That's got to be it, though. Eoin Larkin fires one over. Kilkenny are champions again!!!!
-
17:07Brian Cody greets the flashes of the cameras on the sideline yet again. Five All-Ireland's in six years, with last year the only blip. Tipp never looked like getting there to be honest. A stunning riposte from the Cats. They're back!
-
17:10That's Cody's eighth All-Ireland, in 11 finals, in 13 years.
-
17:12For what it's worth, my MOTM, was Tommy Walsh, for setting the pace, snuffing out danger time and again and setting up wave after wave of Kilkenny attacks.
-
17:14Brian Hogan claims the Liam MacCarthy Cup - Kilkenny's 33rd. Cúpla focail ás Gaielge. He thanks "girlfriends, mothers and .. wives", in that order. Just ruined what could have been a great few days there.
-
17:18

17:20Brian 'If I could just say a few words I'd be a better public speaker ' Hogan calls for "three chips for Tipp".
In fairness, it was warm tribute to their vanquished opponents. Plenty of respect there. -
17:21Jackie Tyrrell is another shoult for man-of-the-match, kept Corbett awful quiet back there.
-
17:22Has to be Walsh, though, sure he even clocked the ref when he got in the way. That's dedication. Nobody's safe from Tommy.
-
17:47Philip OToole thanks for the brilliant updates, best I could do up here in sweden. congrats kk, from a galway man
