How many points do you think BESS in Trinity will be this year? Thanks

I would not like to guess! Demand for Business courses has gone up. We will wait to see on Monday.
  • 17:17
My daughter got 360 points and she wants to study politics and law in DCU. Do you think she will make it? Regards

Has she satisfied all other entry requirements? Take a look in the Irish Times exam supplements and see what it was last year. Course points can change due to a change in supply and demand.

I don't know if she will make it but you and I will know on Monday.

Well done on a great leaving cert.
  • 17:28
Hi , I have applied to UCD and am eligible for the HEAR scheme. I didn't get all the points I might need. What is the average reduction of points? The web says 15% but can it be more? Thanks !

To the best of my knowledge the maximum reduction one can get through the Hear scheme is 60 points. I would advise you to contact them directly www.accesscollege.ie

    Good luck

There are a lot of rumours going around that teaching will go down. Do you think there is any chance it will go up? I got 475 so I'm cutting it tight. What is your opinion?

The truth will come out on Monday. Please view answers relating to primary teaching courses below.
Well done. A great result. Make sure that you satisfy the other entry requirements.
  • 17:36
I got 490 points but am really not happy. I will have enough points to do my subject of choice in UCD but will probably not get my first choice of trinity. I would rather repeat than study in UCD, does that sound like a good idea??
I am sorry to hear   that you are not happy.

You do not know what you are going to be offered on Monday.

With regard to repeating, well do you feel repeating is for you? Is there room for you to improve? Can you change your study skills etc?

Weigh up your other options. Research the course that you get offered on Monday. You might change your mind about it.

Research PLC courses - detail about PLC course is answered below.
Take a year out and change your preference order on your CAO.

Think this out and weigh up your options.

We are here next Monday and Tuesday. Do get in touch if you need more advice or support.

Hi. My daughter received 430 points in her Leaving Cert. We are chuffed, but she is distraught as she has missed her first choice, which was science teaching at UL. Could you possibly give us advice on options? Thanks a million.

You do not know if she missed Science teaching in UL. Nobody will know until Monday. Don't panic just yet.

She will be offered another course in which she satisfies the points and minimum requirements. Research this course and see if she is interested in the subjects studied.   She could always go on and apply to do the Higher Diploma in Education allowing her to become a secondary school Science teacher. One would need a level 8 Science-related degree to get into this course and even at that, entry is not guaranteed as demand exceeds supply at the moment.

There are other universities that offer science teaching. Maybe she will get offered a place on one of these courses?

If all else fails she could look at PLC progression routes and see if she can enter into  science  teaching at UL  using her FETAC results. Please check out answers regarding PLC below and click on the links.

Would she be a suitable candidate for repeating?

Well done to all on  a great result. I hope that things work out.

  • 17:45
If you need a C3 in French for a course in history and French and got a D1 would that rule you out automatically or could I still be offered a place?

This question has been answered below.
  • 17:50
I got 395 in the LC and want to Mechanical engineering in LIT or CIT but recently changed my mind and would like to do English & History teaching in Carlow. I was too late to change my mind in the CAO. Do I take the offer monday or wait for carlow

Well how interested are you im Mechanical Engineering? Pursue a course that you are interested in as you are more likely to do well at it and receive a good honours degree.

If you satisfy the requirements for Mech Eng you will get offered it. If you decline it you will not get offered Carlow. That i show CAO works. You may be offered higher prefernces in round 2 but not lower ones.

After Monday check out www.cao.ie - available places and see if Carlow English and History is there. If it is great, apply for it. If not you will have to wait till next year and apply again.
  • 17:54
I got 585 points this morning and with the HPAT I have a total of 741 points. Many people predict that points of Medicine will rise yet again this year but by how much? I'm finding it difficult to stay optimistic...

One step at a time. You obviously worked very hard this year. A huge congratulations on a massive result. Take today to enjoy such an achievement.

People can guess and perdict but nobody will know for definite till Monday. Be optimistic about what you have achieved so far this year.

    The very best of luck.
  • 17:59
My daughter got 530 points in her LC and wants to do Mathematical Sciences in UCC, what are the chances of this course going up? It was 520 last year.

Demand for Science courses have gone up. Whether this will affect your particular course or not will not be know for definite till Monday.

    Well done. Great result.
  • 18:05

has the demand for teaching risen or dropped ?

Please see answers relating to this topic below.

  • 18:06
My daughter got 360 points and wants to do science in gmit, any indication yet if the points are likely to go up for science in GMIT

The only indication is that the demand for Science courses has increased this year. What science courses will be affected by this increase in demand? Nobody will know the answer to this till Monday.

    The best of luck.
  • 18:08
Hey if my two lowest grades are D1(in biology) and D2(in maths) can I count the D2 for maths or do I have to count the D1 .. both honours

Count the one that gives you the most points. It sounds like Maths is the one to be counting. Don't forget to add in your 25 bonus points!

Well done and the best of luck over the next few weeks.
  • 18:13
Cian M You stated below (at 12:42) that "The median is the average score attained by students." I'd suggest not giving too much advice to people about Maths! Put simple the median is actually the "middle" number, not the average. They are not the same.
  • 18:18

Cian M correctly pointed out that "the median is actually the "middle" number, not the average. They are not the same." We gave the wrong answer earlier at 12:42. Thanks for that. It's been a busy day.

  • 18:31

I got 440 points and a HC2 in English. To get my first choice (Journalism in DCU) I needed a HB3 in English and 410 points. Is there any way I might still get my first choice? I heard that many students were dissapointed about their English results.

You must satisify th eentry requirements in order to  get an offer. If you are disappointed with your English result I would advise you to appeal it. Please see details regarding appeals procedure below.

Another option would be for you to repeat your English only next year. You do run the risk of points changing though.

We are back tomorrow. Contact again if needs be. Very well done.

  • 18:33
Hey. I got 520 points in my leaving cert and 151 in the HPAT. I am hoping to do medicine in TCD. Clearly I do not have the required points but I'm eligible for the DARE scheme. Do you think I have a chance of being accepted as I'm 70 points short?

I understood that the maximum amount of points reduction under the HEAR scheme was 60. However, i stand to be corrected. i recommend that you contact HEAR on www.accesscollege.ie

The best of luck. Congratulations on doing so well.
  • 18:38
My son failed maths. He got 220 points. Is there any way he can get in to college?

This question has been answered earlier. Please see below.

    Thank you
  • 18:41
My daughter sat some exams in hospital this year while repeating her LC. In one subject she recieved a C and she has been getting As in it all year and last. It was her sickest day in hospital and she only did 1/2 the paper. Does she have any comeback?

Has your daughter being suffering from an illness all year? If so did she apply th DARE? A DARE applicant can get into a course on a reduced point requirement.

You could get this paper rechecked and see if her grade improves. Unfortunately, there is no other comeback that I know of.
  • 18:45
so confused... will my daughter need to pass maths in order to attend UCC ?? looking at course ck108 .. i'm online and see no math requirement to get in...can you confirm pls?
Your prayers have been answered. You do not need Maths to study Arts in UCC, ck108.

    Enjoy the celebrations.
  • 18:45
My daughter got 340 points and is worried whether she will get commerce in Galway. Is this possible..Thanks

Nobody knows what way points will go till Monday.
  • 18:46
For new cao courses - new in 2013 - are the minimum requirements are all you have to go by ?

Yes, that is all for the moment until Monday.

    The best of luck.
  • 18:48
What is the position with regard to deferring a college place until next year. ? Is it possible

If a young person is offered the course they really wanted and worked towards, the offer is a tangible educational commodity. They may wish to defer their place for any number of reasons.

The most common reasons are: sports or other commitments, travel or gap year, family commitments, bereavement, health.

In this case they should contact the admissions office of the college in question and explain clearly their reasons for deferring. The college will then inform the CAO directly of the student’s deferral.

In rare cases deferral may not prove possible.

  • 18:49
My daughter achieved 470 points. If she accepts an offer will she still be included in second round offers for courses higher up her list of choices. Thank you

    Yes she will.

    Best wishes.
  • 18:54
Hi I got 470 points in my LC - next Monday do you just get offered your first choice on the CAo if you are lucky enough or can you be offered 2nd and 3rd choices if not successful in the 1st choice

If you get enough points and satisify entry requirements for your first choice well then you should get offered your first choice. If you fall short of this you will then be offered your second choice again, providing that you meet all the necessary requirements and so on..

  • 18:55
igot 430 points want comp applic in dcu reqd 400 last year what you think any chance?

The demand for technology courses have increased. Nobody knows what courses will rise or fall. We must hold tight till Monday. In the meantime, congratulate yourself!
  • 18:58
If I'm applying for a course not related to Maths, for example Irish or English, will the Maths bonus points still come into play? I.e. could someone with twenty fewer points than me but who had sat Higher Level Maths receive a place before me?Thanks

Are you counting Maths in one oof your best six subjects? If so then yes the bonus points still come into play regardless of what course you are applying for.

If that person is applying to the same cousre and both of you satisfy other entry requirements well then the answer is No.. You will get in before her as you have higher points. She might also get in depending on the cut off points.
  • 19:01
My son got 375 points in his Leaving Cert and wants to do BIS in CIT where the points were 325 for it last year , would points rise significantly for that course ?

Please look through answers on this below.

    Thank you.
  • 19:03
Hi, My daughter has had a complete change of heart since submitting her CAO change of mind. She has 605 points and wants to study Science which isn't even on her application. She has seen courses of interest in UCC UCD and UL. Any thoughts? thanks

Your daughter has good points to play around with. She could take a year out and fill out a new CAO form next year. it is best that she purues a course that she is interested in.
  • 19:05
Please advise: I got 430 points. I have computer applcation in dcu as 2nd choice. Was400 points last year. Is it likely to have gone up by more than 30? Also, if it stays at 400 am I sure of a place

if it stays at 400 and you satisify all entry requirements then you should get a place.

Nobody knows about course entry points till Monday.

Well done on a very good result.

Hi, My daughter has had a complete change of heart since submitting her CAO change of mind. She has 605 points and wants to study Science which isn't even on her application. She has seen courses of interest in UCC UCD and UL. Any thoughts? thanks

I know that some colleges offer a transfer once you have registered with that colleege. In order to be eligible for such a transfer on emust have the necessary points  and met the entry requirements for the course that they wish to transfer to. Howvever, you are not guaranteed a successful transfer as it will depend on the demand to transfer into the course verus the number of available places. Not all HEI's offer this service so I would advise you to contact the HEI that is of interest to you.

Here all day if you need us.

    Good luck
  • 09:21
in regards to LCVP, CAO says not all HEI's count it as meeting eligibility requirements in regards to passing subjects. can LCVP be counted as a grade rather than just for points in some HEI's ?

As far as I know the answer to this question is no. I will confirm this as soon as possible.
  • 09:27
My daughter got 490 points & in 83rd percentile in hPat v proud of her but she wants to do Med 1st choice, Science2nd & Engineering 3rd choice. Based on last year what are her chances of being offered anything. What happens if theres no offers. Thank

You will have to wait until Monday. She should definitely get at least a level6/7 offer? Whether she gets an offer on a level 8 will depend on how she filled out her CAO level 8 choices. We are here all day Monday and Tuesday. If you have any concerns please mail us.

She has plenty of options with such good grades. If her CAO line of choice no longer suit her she could possible take a year out or look to transfer courses once she has registered with the college. Please read email below giving you information regarding course transfers within a particular HEI.
  • 09:29
please advise got 430 point have co mputer applcation in dcu as 2nd choice was400 points last year is it likely to have gine up by more than 30 also if it stays at 400 am i sure of a place

Again nobody will know for sure until Monday. Yes the demand for technology and business courses have risen but who knows what courses will be affected and what courses won't. Hold tight and enjoy your success.

We are here alll day on Monday and Tuesday. Mail if you need help or advice.

I got 325 points and I hope to study an Arts degree in UCD (joint honours). I am also eligible for the HEAR programme. I have fallen short by 25 points. Will the HEAR programme get me there?

Each college or university taking part in the HEAR scheme has set aside a quota of places on a reduced points basis for students entering through the scheme. I cannot tell you exactly how many points you will get off. You enter into a pool for the quota of places. Example - 7 HEAR applicants are looking to study Arts in UCD . None of the seven have the required points but all meet HEAR eligibility and have gotten confirmation that their application has been successful. Now UCD ARTS has a quota of six places. The first six with the highest grades get places.

This quota is different for each third level institution. As well as receiving a reduced points place, HEAR Students may also receive a variety of academic, personal and social supports while studying at third level.

I would advise you to look on www.accesscollege.ie and contact the access officer in UCD.

The best of luck. I hope that things work out for you. We are here all day Monday and Tuesday if you need us.

  • 09:39

    The best of luck

i got 470 points - if i dont get my 1st choice do i get a offer for my 2nd or 3rd choice on monday or in the 2nd round thanks

Providing that you meet all th enecessary requirements. If you don't have this for your first choice but satisify all conditions for your second choice, well them on Monday at 6 am you should have an offer for your second choice online.

Hope that all works out for you.
  • 09:45
I'm very short on nursing points. Is there another way in by PLC or something??

Th eanswer is yes. Please read mails bleow giving website and links regarding PLC courses.

PLC colleges tend to run a one year programme known as nursing studies. One needs 5 passes to get onto this course. You must contact these colleges as soon as possible. This is a popular course and fills up quickly. You apply directly to the college.
  • 09:46
I got 500 points. I want to do computer science in ucd. The points last year were 470. The points increased by 60 points in 2012, is there such a demand this year that it will increase by 30 more points? Please help!

We will have to sit tight and wait until Monday.
  • 09:50
Does the maths second chance option apply to ordinary an higher students?

Some do but others only apply to higher level as they require a minimum of a higher C3 to begin with such as the Level 8 (honours) engineering programmes in DIT.

I would advise you to contact the admissions officer in the particular HEI that interests you.
  • 10:05

WHY IN GODS NAME DO THEY MAKE US WAIT UNTIL MONDAY FOR OFFERS.

Round one is not just about Irish Leaving cert students. It oincludes Eu students and many more. Some people who are applying through CAO are only getting their GCSE results today.

Cao send  information to admissions officers in all HEI. All this information has to be inputted and entry requirements have to be checked. There is an enormous amount of work involved in this. I imagine that HEI staff will be working very hard in order to have your offers out to you as soon as possible that being this Monday.

I hope that you get what you want. Here all day Monday and Tuesday if you need help.

in regards to LCVP, CAO says not all HEI's count it as meeting eligibility requirements in regards to passing subjects. can LCVP be counted as a grade rather than just for points in some HEI's ?

Getting back to this question. Some HEI's do accept LCVP as a subject to satisfy eligibilty requirement. To dind out which HEI's do please go to www.cao.ie. Then on the left hand side go to applicant scoring. You will be directed onto a new page. At the very bottom of the page you will see an option to click here. Click and you will be directed to a page that gives you this information.

Hope that this is of help to you. Get back to me if you run into problems.

What percentage of students got more than 580 points?

This information is not available yet. Hopefully next week.

My sons leaving cert physics class grades all appear to be down by 25%. He's requested to view it & will then appeal. If there is a mistake, what happens about college courses, scholarships etc that he may miss out on?

Please refer to answers below with regard to the appeals process. This will hopefully answer your question. With regard to scholarships I would advise you to contact the HEI directly.
  • 10:21
My sons leaving cert physics class grades all appear to be down by 25%. He's requested to view it & will then appeal. If there is a mistake, what happens about college courses, scholarships etc that he may miss out on?

Yesterdy's Irish Times CAO supplement gave a breakdown of leaving cert suject grades and also compare sit to last years. Take a look at it.
  • 10:26
My son got 460 points whch does not take into account the 25 bonus points for maths, he received a C3 in maths which was his lowest mark and not included in his 6 subjects. Is 460 correct or does he have 480?

Write down his seven subject and beside Maths put in 85 points. Write in the points for all other subjects. Now tally up your best six subjects now.

You can do this on www.qualifax.ie . Clicjk on the student tab up top. Then go to useful tools on the left hand side of the page. Under this will be points calculator.

Good luck. Well done to all involved.
  • 10:27
probably a few points short for med /1st 5 choices. 6th choice science if dont wish to take 6th choice and repeat lc but meanwhile appealing a paper can i still be offered higher choices even though ive turned down choices 6 yo 10 ,/.729 achieved

The answer to this question is yes. Please see answer to appeals procedure/ upgrades below
  • 10:34
I'm still curious about math.... is it required that you pass math in order to get into UCC arts ck101 or ck108 .. we have the points but failed higher maths and can't see anywhere on their website or the CAO site if passing math is an entry req. ty

The good news is that you are correct. One does not need to pass Maths to be sitting on this course. However you must satisfy the following entry requirements -
HC3 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at H or O level in the Leaving Certificate from:
Irish, English, another language and three other subjects recognised for entry purposes

I do hope that you get in and enjoy UCC.

  • 10:44
We are devastated and cant think straight and feel we have no hope. Our son got 290 points...no hope of any choice on his cao. He wanted Business and Law. Do you think he could do B&L in Griffith college and transfer to DIT after one year?

Mind yourself. There is no need for despair. He has plenty of options and I will take you through some.

290 points is above the average leaving cert result. Your son is above average so well done to all involved.

If he gets no offers it may mean that he did not cover himself enough with CAO application i.e he did not put down level 6 or level 7 courses that require less points than a level 8. He could take a year out, get a job and reapply next year. Level 6 and 7's can lead to a level 8 (honours) degree it just means that he is taking the scenic route. People have started out with level 6 and gone all the way to PHD's.

Griffith College is a fee paying college. Some colleges offer transfers but it is most likely that transfers wont be offered till he completes a certain level e.g. completes level 7 and then trnsfers. I suggest that you contact Griffith College and DIT to see if this has been done before as not all HEI offer this service.

He also could you PLC courses as a progression route. Please read mails below. I have given links and information on this typr of progression route. Also after next Monday CAO will have vacant places on their website www.cao.ie. See if there is any courses that would interest your son. You can apply for these courses then.

There is hope and plenty of it. Mail again if you need to. The best of luck.

got 550 points anf have primary teaching in maynooth as my first choice. Will the places be done on a lottery basis and if so is it by points
It only comes down to a lottery if these use random sampling. If the cut off point for this course happens to be 540 well then your in, provided that you meet the other entry requirements. Now lets imagine that there are 10 places left and 15 candidates have 540. Who out of the 15 gets in? These 15 places will be done on a lottery basis.

I do hope that you go straight in. The best of luck.
  • 11:04

My son got 455 points and is hoping to do Law and Accounting in UL – last year the entry requirement was 415 points – what do you think his chances are of getting his preferred course ?

I am afraid that nobody will know the definite answer to that until Monday.

  • 11:05
I GOT 360 POINTS DO YOU THINK I WILL GET FIRST ROUND OFFER IN CAO IN ARTS UCD

Please see answer to similar question below.

    Well done
  • 11:20
My first (CAO) choice is Journalism in DCU, the points needed were 410, I got 440. One of the requirements was a HB3 in English, I got a HC2. I heard that most people were disappointed with their English results. Do you think that maybe they would drop down the requirements? Could I still get my first choice? Thank you.

Yesterday's Irish Times has a CAO supplement. This supplemnt has a detailed breakdown of this year and last years grades for all subjects. Check the English results out.

Unfortunately, I do not have good news for you on the matriculation requirements. Enrty requirements tend to be set in stone.  Only the points for courses fluctuate. I am very sorry for you.

Well done on doing so well. You still have plenty of options.

Contact us here if we can be of any assistance. Open for business Monday and Tuesday.
  • 11:27
I got 425 points. My first choice was science at trinity but obviously I haven't enough points for that. All my other science related courses require a b3 and unfortunately I got a c1. One of my options is to do a level 8 science course at DIT and repeat my leaving cert maths course. I could then make a new CAO application for a level 8 science course next year. If I go down this route, would I have to pay for my level 8 course ? Please help. Desperate !

Th eanswer is yes. You will be charged tuition fees on the course that you take up through your CAO application 2014.
Check to see if any of your other choices offer the special Maths exam. Phone the admissions office. This could be your lifeliner for other Science courses.
  • 12:03
    >I didn't get the points I need for most of my courses. The remaining one that I really want to be offered is my 9th choice. Can I accept my Level 7/6 course and wait and see if I get offered my 9th choice Level 8?

If you get offered say your sixth choice of your level 8 and decline, well then you will not receive courses further on down your list. You will only get offered courses above your sixth choice. If you do not satisfy the requirements for your top 8 then you will get offered your ninth choice providing that you meet entry requirements also.
  • 12:06
If a student accepts   a second or third-choice course offer is she then excluded from second-round offers?
    Many thanks.

No she can be offered choices that lie above her offer. Eg, if she got offered her third choice on Monday it could be possible that she might be offered her first or second choice on round two. She will never be offered courses below her third choice.
  • 12:07
My daughter failed English does this mean she has failed her  leaving cert even though she did well in other subjects and got a merit in lcvp

This question has been asked already. Please see answer below.
  • 12:08
Hi, I only got 380 points and have nursing down. It is what I really want to do and really don't want to repeat. Is there another way into it by PLC or something? Thanks

Yes, one of the PLC courses that is used as a progression route into nursing in a HEI is called nursing studies. I have talked about PLC in detailed below. Please read and research teh websites given.

Hello, my child got an overall score of 440 in her LC. Honors in all subjects except for her language subject. She is eligible for Dare but I don't know how many points she would be elegible for. She is hoping for law at UCD. We wait with a baited breath for Monday. What was the median point this year?

The median score for Law in UCD 2012 was 515. The cut-off was 495. DARE students can get anything up to 60 points reduction. How much of a reduction one will get will depend on the quota of DARE places on that particular course versus the number of DARE applicants for that particular course. This topic has also been explained below.

My daughter got 385 points in her leaving cert. She would like to get two subjects rechecked. We are away the 30th and 31st august at a wedding in Spain. She is confident her grade should go up. Do you advise getting it rechecked without looking at the paper with a teacher? Also, arts degree in Maynooth is 370 points. Do you think this may go up looking at trends of recents years? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Your daughter has to be there in person for the viewing of scripts.   I would suggest that you contact the school where she sat the leaving cert.

Another option might be to by pass the rechecks and send them straight for an appeal. This however, will cost you €40 per subject. This fee is refundable if you are granted an upgrade. Get in touch with your school for appeals application form.

I won't know points for courses till Monday.

I failed Hon. Maths and chemistry and am looking into repeating. Can I repeat some subjects and take some results from 2013 and use them with the results I receive in 2014 when re-applying for courses in 2014?

The answer to that is no. You can only calculate your points from the one sitting. You can satisfy entry requirements from repeating. First example - I want primary Eduvcation  . Scenario one -  I got 500 points but failed honours   Irish. I have the points requirement but not the matriculation requirements so I go back and   just repeat my Irish . Scenario 2 - I get an honour in honours Irish but I do not get enough points so I go back and repeat. I choose 6 subjects. I don't include Irish in this because I can use last years honour to satisfy the matriculation requirement.

    Is that clear enough?

I applied to both Trinity and UCD as a mature student. I got an offer from both, with Trinity's being subject to matriculation requirements. During the CAO Round A offers I got an offer from UCD, and as I didn't know the outcome of my exam, I accepted it not wanting to miss out on a college place entirely. Now that I know I did well enough for Trinity in the LC, where will my offer come from on Monday? UCD or Trinity, which was a higher preference on my CAO?

From what I am reading I imagine that you did not get an offer from TCD but you got a letter stating that if you satisfied the matriculation requirements that you would get a place on a particular course in TCD. You seem to have accepted an offer from UCD but it is still possible that you will receive an offer of higher preference than this. This could happen in round one or round two.

Have I understood and answered your email correctly?

  • 12:38

Hi. Re rechecking papers. Say you get offered a course and accept it. But when t[...]hey recheck you paper you drop enought points to go below the minium requirement for the course you accepted - do you then have to leave that course? Thanks

What happens is that CAO contact the HEI that you are attending to notify them of this downgrade. It is then up to that particular HEI to decide whether to keep you or lose you.

Data shows that most appeals go up as opposed to down so let's hope that you are one of the lucky ones.

    Good luck.

  • 12:42
I received a C2 in hon history but I am not sure if I should take it up again when repeating as I believe that's the best I can do for the subject. I sat 8 exams, received   a B3 in ord. English and a D2 in ord. Irish and a D2 in ord. Spanish. Could I take those three for matriculation and repeat Hon. Maths, Chemistry, Economics and another two for points?

Be sure to pick six subjects not five. The others can be used for mat purposes provided that they are not looking for a higher score or level than you achieved. Be sure that your wish list for next year won't involve a course where you need a higher B2 or something.

    Any other questions?
  • 12:46
I got a total of 390 points. I'm hoping to do Comm in NUIG. On the entry requirements it looks like I must include Maths as one of the four mandatory subjects plus two others (giving me a total of 345 for entry). Is this the case?

No. You need to satisfy entry requirements which means that for this particular course you need to have passed Maths. It does not mean that you need to include your points from your Maths as one of your top six.

You should still have 390 points and satisfy specific entry requirements so well done you.

  • 12:46
Will Arts in UCD go up or down? I got 365 points. Thanks

Hi there. You will find the answer to this question below.
  • 12:47
Do you know what reduction a student might get if they are eligible for the HEAR programme. I got 380 points but points required for course is 455 points.

Please check previous emails where I answered questions on this topic.
  • 13:49
Can you please repost HEAR information, as I have gone back through previous po[...]sts and can't seem to see it, thanks

Check out www.accesscollege.ie. Or you can email me a specific query?

My daughter got 425 and is devastated as she wanted Midwifery in TCDor UCD. She did not put Dundalk on CAO as she expected higher points. Any chance at all? Next choice is Health and Society in DCU, 430 last year. We don't know what to tell her. Than

Nobody will know until Monday. Keep an eye out of vacant places on www.cao.ie. Nursing programmes tend to be quite popular to they may not appear here.

She can take the scenic route to nursing by doing nursing studies through a college of Further Education. Please see information regarding PLC and FETAC below.

The best thing to tell her is that she has a lot of choice. One being the PLC route. She could also take a year out and reapply changing her order of preference on her CAO form.

She could also look into the Health and Society course and see how interested she would be in the subjects being offered on this programme.

She could repeat but be sure that repeating is for her. Repeating is not for everyone.

The best advice I could give would be go with the course that interests you most. The more you like it the easier it will be to study.
  • 13:59
Hi, my partner's daughter received 510 points and is over the moon, as are we,
however her first choice is Science at UCD, which required 500 points. There was
an enormous hike in last year's CAO points requirement, so I have urged caution,
but we are still relatively optimistic she can achieve her place with 510 points, are
           we being over optimistic perhaps?...

The demand has increased for Science, Technology and Business coursesThe truth is that nobody knows what courses will rise and what ones will fall yet. Hold tight until Monday.

  • 14:01
What was the national average no of points

The average leaving cert results is 285 approx. Statistics coming from CAO shortly.

  • 14:08
I got an E in higher level maths and really want uo do nursing. I have the points. What are my options

Nursing courses tend to have a maths requirement. Double check all your nursing courses and see if they all need Maths requirement.

One option for you would be to repeat just Maths next year and reapply.

Contact all the colleges that you have applied for and see if any are running the special maths exams for those who failed to get an offer due to not fulfilling the Maths requirement.

Nursing studies through a college of Further Education is also a pathway into nursing. You need 5 passes to as study this. Check information below on FETAC and PLC. Act on this as soon as possible. Places may be already full or filling up quickly.
  • 14:09
I did my leaving cert in 2009. I started a degree in 2010 in which I didn't enjoy. I left and undertook a plc in nursing. I now am in my final year of nursing in a great university in Scotland. Don't give up if you don't succeed the first time.

    Thank you for this message.

what is the trend for law is it likely to go down points as i herd it was? u got 480 and last year law in cork was 475 what are my chances

Please read answer to my last post below. Same rule applies to all subject areas.

Good luck on Monday and thank you.

Can you please repost HEAR information, as I have gone back through previous posts and can't seem to see it, thanks

The best thing to do is look at www.accesscollge.ie. It will give you all the information. If you have a specific question, please ask.

  • 14:48
My daughter looks like she might get arts in maynooth but doesnt have the maths grade for the business section of that degree and would prefer do arts in galway which is her next choice.Do colleges ever agree to transfers if case made?

If you daughter does not satisfy the Maths requirement  then she will not receive an offer do Business through Arts. Does she satisfy the entry requirements for NUI Galway?

Your transfer could be possible after year 1. A transfer form would need to be completed along with a fee of €25. Each university has its own policy on transfers so i suggest that you contact the admissions office of NUIM and Glaway.
  • 14:52
got 455 in my Lc, it looks like i`ll get business and law in dit which was 4th on my cao list if an offer for commerce in ucd which is 3rd on my cao list comes in during round2 will i be offered a place even tho i have accepted an offer for bus+law

Yes if you are entitled to an offer for Commerce you will get it regardless of accepting bus and law.

    Good luck
  • 14:53
If I do not get Level 8 offer in First Round but get offered Level 7 offer and accept can I still be offered a Level 8 place in Second Round.

Yes you can still be offered a level 8 at a later stage even if you have accepted a level 6 or 7.
  • 14:57
narrowly missef my first choice but probably better off with my second, im still unhappy with one or two grades though personally. If i get upgraded after a re-check can i still take my second choice if i get offered my first in October ?

You won't know this until Monday.

No, you can stay where you are. If you get an upgrade that entitles you to your first choice you then have two options. One option is to stay where you are and the other option would be to go to your course that was originally your first choice. It is your decision whether to stay or go.
  • 15:02
I have 450 points but i am 15 points short of anything i have down on CAO. What are my options? What happens come offers? Help!

Did you fill in any level 6 or 7's?

You may still get offres as points can go up or dowm. Time will tell.

If you don't get offers you still have options.

Check out PLC information below as well as vacant places through www.cao.ie. You could take a year out and reapply to colleges next year using your results from this year.

Private colleges may still have vacancies? UK clearing system?

Maybe appeal subjects if you feel that the grade does not match your performance on that day?

Hope that these suggestions help. Here all day Monday and Tuesday if you need us.

How can I access my granddaughter's results without contacting her directly .

I don't know if this is possible. You need a PIN to get results online. Your granddaughter school would have her results but I imagine that they would need her authorisation to giv ethem to a third party.

Got 530 points however first 5 CAO courses are now out. Having a re-think, I do not now wish to pursue course 6, 7 or 8 if offered but would really like my 9th choice now... how should I manage this? Can you advise what are the chances?

They may not be out. Wait until Monday.

If it happens that you get your 6, 7 or 8th choice then unfortunately you will never be offered your 9th.  I cannot tell you the chance sof this happening as I do not have access to the information that on ewoul dneed to make a decision. Have you a level 6 or 7 down that can lead you into your 9th ?

If you feel that you have messed up your order of preference you could always take a year out and reapply next year.
  • 15:13
if you get upgraded after a recheck, do you have to accept your new offer ? im happy with my 2nd choice but felt hard done by in one or two subjects. Thanks.

This question has been answered already. Please see below.

My son might qualify for HEAR but didn't apply this year. If reapplies next year via HEAR does he have to still have 2 HC3 grades. He got 300 points only 1 HC3 wants CK101

HEAR applicants still hav eto satisfy minimum entry requirements. He could repeat just on esubject next year and aim for at least a Higher C3. Then he would meet such requirements.
  • 15:16
I have applied to cao with my last year leaving certificate I took a year out because I got offered a course I didn't like last year .. Can you tell me if I am in the exact same position as those who did their leaving this year

Did you defer any offer? If not then you are in the exact same position.

    Good luck.

are there any fees for viewing the scripts? and can you view all of them or is there a limit

No fees for script viewing. You can view all of them. Be sure to fill out your application and get it back to your school by august 20th.

I am hoping to be offered Science in Trinity on Monday however whilst I would love to go to Trinity I have since changed my mind. What are the chances of taking the Science course and after a month switching to my now desired choice of BESS? Thanks

Trinity do offer a transfer system once you have registered with them. You must stisfy the points and specific entry requirement for the new course. It is still not guaranteed as it depends on how many people want to transfer and the number of place savailable. I suggest you contact the admissions office in TCD for further information.

My son was approved for the HEAR scheme and has met all the requirments for the courses on his CAO, approx how many extra points is he likely to get from the HEAR scheme?

It is hard to say. To the best of my knowledge the maximum reduction is 60. However, exactly how much of   a reduction will depend on the demand and supply of HEAR places. This differs for between courses and HEI'sI would advise you to contact the access officer at the particular college of choice. Also look at www.accesscollege.ie.

    That make it any clearer?
  • 15:29
just as someone who is currently a student nurse, places in third level colleges for nursing from plc's are very limited and you actually need a distinction in all of the subjects you do in order to get in

This is true. Thank you for your message.
  • 15:33
my daughter got 495 points in the leaving cert and is disappointed (I'm delighted) she only wants BESS in Trinity - 2012 points were 495 what can I say to her to cheer her up?

You can tell her to save the tears and wait until Monday as nobody knows what way things will go. Points can go up but they can also come down.

Did she feel that all her results reflected her performance? If not, appeal? You may or may not com eup a grade.

Can I use my 2013 results to re-apply to CAO in 2014 should I get a course I really do not believe is for me now.

Yes you can use your 2013 results when applying in 2014.
  • 15:59
Hi, I got 530 points in my leaving and probably failed to get dietetics. My next choices were science in trinity , science in ucd and then BESS in trinity. I either want BESS or science in trinity but I'm not sure how to go about this for offers on Monday. If I didn't choose science in trinity how could I get BESS? Thanks

I am a little confused . If you have Science down in TCD and get it but you really want BESS you could apply for a transfer. You must have the points and specific points for BESS . This is still not a definite as it depends on whether there are places on the BESS course and teh number of other people interested in transferring over to BESS.

Not sure about UCD. I would advice you to contact the admission office. If you get UCD you will not be offered any lower preferences. You may be offered higher perferences at a later stage.

My son got 280 points so wont get his choice of Sports Therapy in Athlone. What other routes can he go down. During the summer he has worked in a Bar and is now interested in Bar Management. Where could this be studied if Sports Therapy is not on.

Has he applied to do sports therapy anywhere else? Can he do a level 6or 7 and then progress to level 8?

Check out www.cao.ie and view where bar management can be studied. Keep an eye out to see if any bar management course come up on www.cao.ie vacant places after ,Monday next. He can apply for any course that comes up under vacant places. If this is not possible he reapply next year.

He could also using FETAC or PLC as a progression route into a level 8 the following year.

Hi there. I am intersted in Beauty Therapy and haven't yet filled in a CAO form is it too late?

You need to be contacting a college of Further Education. They run beauty therapy courses. You do not apply for beauty therapy through CAO. Please check previous emails where I discuss PLC course and FETAC. Get calling these colleges straight away. Places my be full or filling up quickly.

Will I get my sixth choice for level 7 ,if i did not get the points for all my level 8s , only the 6th choice in my level

I don't understand this question. Can you come again, please.

    Thank you.
  • 16:14

  • 16:15
In today's paper the points are broken out under 'final' and 'median'. What's the difference, please?

Final is the cut off points. Meaning the last person accepted on this course needed xxx amount of points. The median is the points scored by the middle person in the group.
  • 16:18
Can I keep any of the results for some subjects and concentrate on others and then combine the results for CAO in 2014? I got good results in some subjects and would like to keep those and just study for the ones I did not do well in. Is this possible in any way and if so how many subjects can I keep the 2013 results for?

You can keep subjects to satisfy specific or minimum entry requirements. You cannot combine scores from two sittings. Your leaving cert score can only be based on one sitting and the counting of your best 6 subjects.

I got 510 points in my Leaving Cert and my first choice in Trinity is History & Irish 545 points last year. I am so worried - Do you know if there were many second round offers in this course last year and if so what were the points requirements.

Or do you know if Trinity advertised many vacant courses - (Irish & Sociology) on the CAO after offers were made last year.

I am so upset that I didn't put this as my second choice as the points for it were only around 480 last year

I have UCD as my second choice but I really want Trinity -

I don't know about last years vacant list. Plus these lists change everyday. If Irish & Sociology appears again keep an eye on it. Start looking at it from next Tuesday onwards.

Check out last years points by going on www.cao.ie, then to points and input the year.

Colleges offer transfers so you could check this out with UCD and Trinity.

Also you could apply to PLC courses. Please find details of these below.

I got 585 points yesterday and hope to do Veterinary UCD. Any idea whether the points will rise above last year's 585 mark?

No idea, sorry. We will not know until Monday.

  • 17:18
I have been eligible for dare, does that mean i will get my first choice?

No not necessarily. Whether you get your first choice or not will depend on whether you satisfy the entry requirements and DARE requirements.
  • 17:41
Can i change my cao choices?

No. The time to have done that was prior to July 1st. You can apply for any vacant places that come onto the www.cao.ie. Check this out on Tuesday next and every day after that.
  • 17:42
I failed English. will I get any college offers?

You need to check your course requirements. English is not a requirement for all courses or college. Look up this on www.cao.ie , course search. If your course does not require a pass specifically in English and you have met all other requirements well then you should get an offer.

The Helpdesk is now closed but due to very popular demand will reopen for three hours on Friday morning from 9am-12noon. Please submit any questions you may have via the comment section above or by email to resultshelpdesk@irishtimes.com
If you submitted questions after 6pm they will be answered in the morming. Thanks for your patience. The Helpdesk will also operate all day Monday and Tuesday to deal with queries relating to CAO offers
  • 09:43
If you accept your first round offer, will you get offers from second round?

Whether you accept an offer or not in the first round of offers you will still remain in the running for a higher preference offer in the next rounds if you become entitled to one.  For example if you are offered your 5th preference in round one and you accept it, the CAO will still try to get you as close to your first preference as possible.  So if you get the points for a higher preference place in round two, you will be offered it and it's up to you whether to accept it or not.  So even though you already have an offer from round one you can still accept a higher preference offer in round two or three.  You could also if you wish decide to stay with your first acceptance either.

I have applied for the New Kilkenny Maynooth Campus full time arts course MH901. Points aren’t yet known. Is there any idea what the points roughly might be for it?

This sounds like it's going to be a great new new course option.  Unfortunately, we won't know until Monday morning what the points are going to be.  I would imagine the points will be somewhat in line with MH101 Arts in NUIM, maybe a little less.
  • 10:00
I got 360 in my LC and I'm hoping to get arts in UCD but it is my 3rd choice! It's the first course I have the points for though do you think I'll be okay?

The cut off last year for DN500 Arts last year was 350 so you're in with a good chance of getting an offer.  Whether it will be in round one though depends on this years demand for places in Arts.  I'd be surprised if you don't get an offer for it at some stage though.  Best of luck Monday.
  • 10:07
Hi, my daughter got 375 points and has been accepted for the HEAR scheme, my question is does she need to do anything further like contacting individual colleges or is this all done through the cao.

Your daughter doesn't need to contact anyone at this stage.   CAO is informed that she has been accepted to the HEAR scheme directly and will take care of everything.   She just has to wait now like everyone else until Monday morning to see what offers she will be made.
  • 10:16
It very likely that I have met this year's points requirement for Computer Science at Trinity. However, as I repeated this year (and did not repeat Irish), I am concerned that I do not meet the course's matriculation requirements. Is it possible to use my Irish language Leaving Cert. result from last year (for matriculation purposes), and combine this with my best six subjects from this year's Leaving Cert. sitting (for scoring purposes)?

Ok, firstly there is no specific Irish requirement for this course, it's a pass in English and a pass in one other language, so if you had a pass in any other language (French, German, etc.) it will meet the requirement.  In relation to last year's Leaving Certificate, the answer there is yes.  You can combine your two Leaving Certificates to meet the entry requirements for the course.  So you can use your Irish from last year.  However, you must have given your two Leaving Certificate exam numbers to CAO for this to happen.  If you have, great, CAO will automatically pull in your Irish from last year, if you haven't you need to contact CAO immediately through their website and give them your exam number from last year.
  • 10:33
How does one organise a recheck without viewing the script? Who does one notify and where does one send the cheque?

The State Exams Commission will give your school a personalised appeal application form for you.  You can pay the fee (€40 per subject) either by Credit Card on the examinations.ie website or by using the Bank Giro form attached to your personalised application form, at the bank.
The appeal form, which is sent by the school, must be with the SEC by the 4th September so it must be returned by you to the school by the morning of the 3rd in order for this to happen.  All these details are in a Candidate Information Booklet on the home page of the examinations.ie website if you want to download it.

My daughter is hoping to do an arts degree  and then study for a further two years in St.pats in order to become primary school teacher. She has also put B.sc in educational studies. 4 year honours degree Level 8 in marino on her Cao application. Can she go this Route for primary school and Do 2 yr study in St. Pats after educational studies marino.

Absolutely, the entry requirement for the Postgraduate course in Primary teaching is a level 8 honours degree (2.2 minimum) in any discipline, so the Education Studies Degree can fulfil this requirement.  I would imagine it would be a great foundation for the H. Dip in Primary Ed.

I was wondering what the demand for nursing is this year in the CAO as i did not get the points required and i am hoping that the points will come down some bit!

Unfortunately, I don't see the points dropping in any signficant way for Nursing this year.  There has been no major drop in the demand for places so this would seem to say the points will probably remain broadly along the lines of 2012.  There may be slight movements in individual courses but not a major shift.

If I do not receive a level 8 offer in round 1 or 2 and accept a level 7 is it posssible to transfer to level 8 in a different college after one year or must I complete the full level 7 course.

Generally speaking if you commence a 2 year level 6 course or a 3 year level 7 course, you would normally complete the qualification in one college and then move on to the higher qualification in the same college or transfer to a different college.  There is some movement between colleges when going from one qualification to another.  After one year I would imagine it would not be possible to transfer directly into year 2 of another course in another college.  If you have particular colleges in mind you could ring the admissions officers and get their opinion.

Can a teacher accompany a student to view their scripts?

Yes. It is advisable to have someone accompany the student who knows the subject and knows the exam and it's marking scheme very well, so that a clear picture can emerge about the possibility of an upgrade.  Each student can be accompanied by one person when viewing a script.

I have a specific question re medicine. I think I am unlikely to get my first choice of medicine course but I have a good chance of being offered my third or fourth medicine choice. I got 625 in the LC. If I accept my third or fourth choice, defer, and repeat the Hpat, can I reapply next year to my first choice if I improve my Hpat score significantly and am confident enough to waive the deferral or am I precluded from doing that because I have deferred?
Also if I accept and defer a first round offer, might I still get a second round offer further up my list of preferences?

Yes you can. You are not precluded from doing this.  If you are allowed defer your place you would submit a CAO application next year putting only that course on the CAO form to take up the defered place.  In the meantime you could repeat the HPAT and if you do much better could then put you first choice med course down on the CAO form before the change of mind to have another go at getting a place on that course.  This will however wipe your defered course from this year once you put any other course on the CAO application.
If you accept and defer a first round offer, you may still get a second round offer further up your list of preferences.

My grandaughter did her Leaving Cert in 2012 and was offered and accepted a place at UCC on a BA course. She has now finished her first year and finds that the course is not really what she likes or gives her scope for the subjects she likes or is good at. The next on her CAO list last year was the Interior Architecture course at CIT which she thinks may have been a better choice for her, but of course wasn't offered it.  Can she now apply for the CIT course this year,  and if so, how would she go about it.

Unfortunately she has left it too late to apply for the CIT course this year.  It is not possible to submit an application at this stage of the year.  There is a late closing date for applications for those already in a HEI of 22nd July but after that date the only courses that can be applied for are Vacant place courses from the CAO website.  It might be no harm contacting the CIT admissions office to discuss this with them even to get information for next year.

  • 11:51

Hi, I expect to be offered a place in Drama at Trinity but no longer want it. What are my chances of getting an internal transfer to science?

It can happen.  It depends on a number of issues.  Generally you can only transfer to a course that you have the points to get into in the first place.  There would have to be places available also on the science course.  When you get into TCD you would have to go to the admissions office and ask them about the transfer possibilities.  Most of these requests seem to be dealt with on a case by case basis.

  • 11:54
Won't get first preference in Trinity. Sure of 2nd choice of Arts in UCD with 525 points, but really should have put Arts in Trinity as 2nd choice. If I defer for a year, can I then make a new CAO application and change the order?

If you are allowed defer your Arts course in UCD then to take up this course next year you must fill out the CAO form and put only that course down on the CAO form.  If you put down other courses such as Arts in TCD on the form then it is essentially a new application because you will have lost your defered place in UCD.
  • 11:56
If accept offer of Arts in UCD, but have enough points for Arts in Trinity, can I transfer between colleges?

Afraid not, totally different courses in two different colleges.
  • 11:58
I got 390 points in my LC which would seem enough points for the course in DCU that I have applied for,but the problem is that I got a D1 in my German exam and the requirement for this course is a C3! Would i still be able to get a place?

Afraid not.  You have not met the minimum entry requirements for the course and not eligible to proceed with your application to this course.  You must meet the entry requirements before your points are taken into consideration.
  • 12:00
When do the CAO points for this year go up?

2013 points will be available from Monday morning on the CAO website and will be available here in The Irish Times also on Monday.
  • 12:03
LC point was 425 and most of my choices were medicine and pharmacy. What will happen now that the point is not enough to make the cut for both. Would CAO offer a chance for other courses?

If all you have put on your level 8 list are Med and Pharmacy courses then it is unlikely you are going to get any offers there and unfortunately there is no facility for you to now include other level 8 course choices (except vacant places).  Did you put down any level 7 courses?
  • 12:05
If my daughter decides to repeat, and does not increase her points next year, can she use this year's points for next year's CAO application?

Yes.  When she is applying to the CAO next year make sure she gives the exam number for both Leaving Certificates and then the CAO will use the one with the highest points automatically.
  • 12:08
If you don't receive an offer in the first round are you still eligible to get an offer in the second if you have enough points? Thank you.

Yes. Whether you receive an offer or not in the first round of offers you will still remain in the running for a higher preference offer in the next rounds if you become entitled to one.
  • 12:10
I was wondering if engineering would go down in points as i got the points required for last year ?

It is looking unlikely that Engineering will go down this year as demand for places is very strong again this year for Technology /Engineering courses.
  • 12:13
Hi, I got 405 points in my leaving cert, but my first choice arts with human rights in NUIG is 425, so you think I might get in as the course fell by 55 points last year. Also if I don't get it, would I get my second choice, arts in NUIG for 305?

I think it is unlikely that Arts with Human Rights will drop considerably this year but there is no way of knowing for definite.  If you don't get an offer for this you are almost certain to get an offer for your second choice in Arts in NUIG.
  • 12:17
Are the points for Home Economics teaching likely to drop this year? And if not is there any other way of getting into Home Economics teaching?

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing until Monday, but we don't anticipate a big drop.  Home Economics teaching is quite limited here in Ireland to get into with only one college offering courses in this area.  Another possibility is the UK.  Have a look at www.ucas.com which is the UK equivalent of the CAO.  You can carry out a course search on the website.
  • 12:21
I got 470 points in the LC but I did not reach the points for any of my 1st three choices on CAO. I did however exceed the points for my 4th choice law plus in UL(405 points). Could I be offered a place on Monday even though its not my first choice?

Remember the points requirements for this year could be quite different from last year and so you just don't know what will happen on Monday.  But based on your question the answer is yes, if you get the points for your 4th preference course you will be offered this on Monday.  The CAO will offer you the highest of your preferences that you are entltled to.
  • 12:23
I got 430 and undemo engineering in galway last was 430 so do i have a chance?

You have a chance, given you have met last year's points requirements however Eng points could creep up a little this year so it's unfortunately a waiting game until Monday.
  • 12:26
What are the chances of my son getting his first preference course B.A. Connect in Arts with Performing Arts in N.U.I.G. with 450 points?I know you will respond - wait til Monday but just wondering what you feel, thanks - great service by the way.

Unfortunately, I have no knowledge about this course that could lead me to tell you other than wait until Monday.  It's a waiting game I'm afraid!
  • 14:31
Hi, many thanks for the advice given here! I have a question about the HEAR scheme. I am eligible, I was wondering how the points reduction works,. Say if the course will be 460 on Monday and I got 450 in the leaving cert, could I get in with that?

Yes you could.  Basically a certain percentage of places on courses are set aside for applicants who have qualified for HEAR, it varies from college to college. If there are more eligible HEAR applicants than places a mini points competition is set up and the top point applicants get the places.  This is all explained on www.accesscollege.ie if you want to see it all in detail.
  • 14:34
Hi, got 400 points if I get offered a course say 5th on my CAO list is it possible to decline this and to accept my 7th choice? (I dont have enough points for first 4)

No. If you get offered your 5th preference everything below this is now gone for you.  You can never move down your list only up and the CAO tries to get you as close as possible to your first preference.
  • 14:36
How many points are possible off GY515 general nursing in galway with DARE scheme?

We don't know for sure but it could be in the region of 50 or thereabouts.  We are not really given this information.
  • 14:38
Are level 7 courses offered seperately to Level 8 course offers?

Yes,  the two lists are completely separate, so most people will get an offer from both lists on Monday and they must decide which one they want to accept.
  • 15:06
Is there such a thing as a post-grad entry into speech and language therapy after doing something health related?

Yes there is a postgraduate course in Speech and Language Therapy in UL.  Details on
www.iaslt.ie - Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists.  There are also a number of these 2 year postgrad courses in the UK which Irish students have trained in.
  • 15:08
Do you know what the demand for law in UCD is like this year?

It doesn't appear that there has been any huge change in the demand for Law this year.  I can't answer specifically for UCD but I would imagine the points will be similar enough to 2012.
  • 15:10
This might be stupid but i really want my fourth choice which is science in galway.. i definately won't get my 1st choice but do you think there is any chance that science in ucd and trinity will go down? because then i could be in trouble?

I would be shocked if Science in any university goes down so it looks like you will be ok.
  • 15:17
My daughter achieved 470 points in her Leaving Cert and her first two choices were Science in DCU and Physics and Biomedical Sience in DCU ( 435 and 415 respectively last year) . What are her chances?

I would say she has a very good chance of getting her 1st choice on Monday.  It's unlikely (but never impossible) that Science will go up 35 points this year to above 470 in DCU.  It will be an early morning on Monday!
  • 15:19
Any chance the HEAR grant will get me into Biomed in Maynooth with 10 points below? Or will it only allow me in with the same minimum points as everyone else?

Yes there is a very good chance as you are not competing with everyone else for a place, you are competing with other HEAR applicants for a small reserved number of places on the course.  Have a look at www.accesscollege.ie for details.
  • 15:26
By your second year in a diploma (level 7 course) are you basically in a level 8 course? I've been told the last two year of a diploma is actually a part of a level 8 degree

There are 2 ways of getting a level 8 honours degree.  First, like in the universities you can go straight into a full level honours degree programme at the end of which you graduate with an hons degree.  The second way is to do a 3 year level 7 ordinary degree (formally called a diploma) and then do an add on year which leads to an hons degree.  So in a way while doing your ordinary degree at level 7 you are working towards your level 8 hons degree, but you must complete the add on level 8 year to get the level 8 hons degree.
  • 15:40
May seem like a silly question, but is 405 a good leaving cert result? whats usually the average? am I above it? thank you for this also, helps a lot :)

Absolutely, 405 is a great Leaving Certificate score.  You should be very proud of yourself.  I haven't got the official figures to hand but from memory I think the average Leaving Certificate result is around the 300 mark so you are well above that.
  • 15:41
Is there a chance general science is UCD or Trinity will go down? i got 465 points.

Unlikely I'm afraid from looking at the demand for places in these courses.
  • 15:45
Hi, my son will most likely repeat he has passed all his subjects this year but no where near points he needed. my questions does he have to repeat english, maths, irish, german..as it says a language he is exempt from but does that mean irish?

Not sure I really understand the question.  If he is repeating his Leaving Certificate he does not have to repeat all his subjects again.  He can use his passes in Maths, English, etc. from this year and pick 6 subjects for his repeat leaving Certificate which he feels will maximise his points.  So essentially he can combine Leaving Certs for meeting entry requirements but not for points.  Hope this answers the question.
  • 15:48
I want to view of two of my scripts but unfortunately I'll be away on holiday during the viewing period. Is it possible for my teachers to view my scripts without me being present ?

Unfortunately not.  The rules state that your papers cannot be handed out to anyone but you.  You must be present and can bring in one other person with you.
  • 15:51
My daughter wanted midwifery in Dublin but unless the points drop will not get it. She is thinking of re applying next year for nursing then can she go into midwifery after? Does not really want her lower choices.

If she has no interest in her lower choices then I think she is wise not to go into them.  She could find herself in the course very unhappy and the dropping out shortly after starting the course.  This is not good for anyone, so serious thought should be given to this before accepting something she is not happy in.
  • 15:55
My daughter got 570. She has phychology in nuig down as first choice but now wants to move to biomedical science nuig also ,which was 550 last year. How long or is it possible for her to transfer over. Will it be down to places available.

It is very difficult to know if this will be possible.  I would recommend ringing the admissions team in NUIG re this.  Some colleges do allow transfers internally to other courses but it seems to be done on an individual basis and yes only happens if they have places.  The fact that she has the points for the course is essential and in her favour but there are no guarantees.  Give NUIG a call.
  • 16:06

My son is in the happy position of having been offered and accepted a PLC course in art and intends applying to art college next year when he has completed his portfolio.

As he wasn’t so definite about his career path in January, his career guidance teacher advised him to apply through the CAO system for other courses as well as the PLC course.

He is now certain that he wants to study art and will apply next year.

So I have two questions: Does he refuse any place offered to him through the CAO this year (as he doesn’t intend taking it up anyway) or defer which was the advice given by his teacher, thus keeping his options open in the unlikely event of changing his mind.

Secondary, does he apply for art college through the CAO or FETAC system next year?  He got 400 points including a  B1H art.

Many thanks for an excellent service which is of great benefit to parents and students – well done.

If he is definitely intent on doing his PLC course then I think he is as well to let the CAO courses go this year which means doing nothing when the offers come in.  It's not clear from your email what the offers are likely to be in but I think there is no point in defering.  He applies to Art college (NCAD) next year through the CAO system while he is in his FETAC PLC course.  The application is the same as this year and he will have to submit his portfolio.

  • 16:08
Is it too late to apply for a PLC or further education course? If not, how do i apply for it?

No, a lot of the PLC colleges are still accepting applications.  Simply ring up the college and get an application form.  Some have online application forms but I would give the college a quick ring first to make sure they are still accepting applications.

I got my fort choice and I'm delighted but I would like to get one of my subject[...]s rechecked if I go down a grade I will lose points will that effect my course even though I excepted the place ?9:14

Congratulations. If you go down in your recheck you can go down in points. CAO contact the relevant HEI. It is up to each college as to whether to let you stay or whether to have you leave.

Very few people go down in rechecks.
  • 09:22
I lost out on my first choice of Veterinary Medicine through random selection even though I had the required 575 points, what are my chances of being offered it in Round 2?

I don''t have the answer to this. How many places will come available will depend on the number of students that decline their place through the first round. Also the amount in the random sampling pool will also have a bearing. Obviously the less people that didn't get it due to random sampling the better it is for you in getting offered a place in round 2.

  • 09:26
I got Pharmacy in RCSI (555 points) but now I want to do Pharmacy in Cork (565 points). Its not on my CAO form at all but i have enough points for it since I got 575 points. Is there any way I would be able to transfer?

I am afraid not staright away. I would suggest that you phone each college. They may have a transfer system that you could apply for after completing your first year of study. Some but not all HEI offer this service.

    Good luck.
  • 09:26
As offers appeared , I'm disappointing I got offer Hospitality management which is only 300 points , the course that i wanted i didn't get as it i got 360 points and the course that i wanted appeared 365. I would like to know if there still any chance of getting the course i really want? And I should i accept ? incase I dont get an offer?

The general advice to you is to accept something in round one because there is no guarantee that you will be offered anything else in the next rounds. If the course you really want is a higher preference course than Hospitality management, then there is a chance that you could be offered a place on it in round two as you are only 5 points off. Remember by accepting the Hopitality Management course in round one does not mean it's all over, you will still remain in the running for a higher preference course and will be offered it whether you accept the Hosp management course or not.
  • 09:29
Business in UL has gone up to 410 from 375 in 2012, was a35 point rise expected & would you feel the 2nd round will see a drop to anywhere near last years levles

We have seen an increase in the demand for Business courses and obviously a demand for this course hence the increase of points. This course did not go down in points in round 2 last year.

My guess would be that it is unlikely to go down by that much to meet last years points.
  • 09:33
If I accept my number one level seven course tomorrow, can i still be offered one of my level eight courses in round two? Eg if i'm offered my second choice in level eight in round two but i've already accepted my number one choice in level seven?

Yes.  Eg. if you are offered your level 6/7 1st preference and your level 8 7th preference in round one and you accept your level 6/7 1st preference then in the next rounds you will remain in the running for everything above your 7th preference in your level 8 list.

My daughter is starting her Leaving Cert year now and would like to apply for Medicine in U.C.C. but while she has a good chance of getting around 550 points , the Hpat will block her .What other routes could she follow ?

She could apply to study medicine aboard. Check out www.eunicas.com. Through eunicas.ie, Irish students can apply for up to eight degree programmes , taught through English, in universities in Europe. She could also apply to Cambridge or Oxford but would have to sit a similar exam to the HPAT know as the BMAT. If applying to UCAS she would have to sit a medical exam called the UKCAT.

The HPAT-Ireland 2014  exam will be taking place on Saturday the 1st of March 2014. She could start working towards this?

I got 400 points and had down early childhood ed. in DIT ad furst choice I missed the course by 20 points, is it likely il have any chance in second round? And if not what is my best options from here?

It is hard to say as it will depend on teh number of people that reject this course in round 1 and also on the number of people who are in the same position as you.

Have you this course down in a different college? I assume that this is your next choice? If so accept it. Although the colleges differ the actual course itself should have similar modules. Plus if points go down and you get offered DIT in round 2 then you can accept and head to DIT.
  • 09:41

My cao form doesn't have my leaving cert results on it thus i have no offers. What do i do? HELP!

Go to the CAO website and use the contact us facility to query this with CAO, quoting your CAO number.

I got 560 points and average in hpat (60%) will I get medicine

Well you should know this by this morning. Have you received any offer?
  • 09:45
I've been offered a place on a level 7 course, but did not fully meet the minimum subject requirement, although I have the points. Does this mean I can accept this place.

This is very unusual. Are you sure about the minimum requirements as it is highly unlikely that you would have been offered the course without meeting these specific requirtements.

It means that you can go ahead and accept this course.
  • 09:47
I didn't manage to get Computing in DIT, I was 5 points off. How does getting some of my subjects rechecked work? Will I get a place if I go up points wise?

The results of the rechecks will be out in mid-October.  Essentially what happens is the results of the rechecks are backdated to today.  So, for example if you get an extra 10 points in October they are backdated to today and whatever you would have been offered today with the 10 extra points must be offered to you in October, even if you are already started on another course.  if you get an offer like this in October you decide if you want to take it or stay with a course you've already accepted.

  • 09:51
I got my first round offer in my email but its for the course that was second on my CAO(Electrical engineering UCC), dose this mean i didn't get into my first choice(Computer Science UcCC)

This means for one reason or another (points or entry requirements) you are not entitled to a place on this course in round one.  If you accept your 2nd preference in round one the CAO will keep trying to get you into your 1st preference in the next rounds if you become entitled to a place.

My son got the required points for mechanical engineering in UL but a D1 instead if a C3. He can do a special maths exam this Thur in UL. Have you any idea of the standard? Should he get some tuition?

The exams vary between the colleges, and some colleges also run prepratory courses to help students get a handle on what to expect. Fees may be payable. All information should be on the UL website.

The exam would be of higher level leaving cert standard if the Maths requirement is a C3 at higher level.

My daughter got 510 points and was offered her second choice, science in UCD. If she accepts this is there a possibility she may be offered her first choice, science in TCD in a second round offer. Thanks

If the points go down for Science in Trinity, well then yes there is the possibility that she might be offered her first choice. If this happens then has the choice to stay in UCD or swap over to Trinity.
  • 09:55
Hello, I received my third choice buy would actaully prefer my fourth. what happens if i dont accept my third and wait to possibly get my fourth in the next round? is this a mad idea? Help needed!!

Once you received your 3rd choice today, effectively all your choices below this are now gone.  The only possibility of you getting any further offers are for your 2nd or 1st choice courses only.  So you should accept your 3rd preference today as there is no guarantee you will get any further offers and could be left with nothing.
  • 09:57
My son got his first choice offer level 8 this morning but has decided he would prefer to take his first choice level 7 - which he missed by 5 points. If, on appeal, he makes up the points will this level 7 offer be made? Thanks

Yes. If he gets an upgrade and satisfied the points requirement and specific entry requirements he should then get an offer for this course. He could also get offered it in round 2 if the points for this course go down.
  • 09:57
My son is fine points short for his course. He has been offered a lower course. If he points increase when rechecked will he then be offered his course .

I have answered this question, please see below.

My son applied for Multimedia CIT (per CAO site this morning 350 down from 365). He got 385 in his Leaving and still has not been offered a place. Does this mean it is over subscribed. I would have thought oversubscription would mean an increase.

Your son seems to have met the points requirement for the course but may not have met the minimum entry requirements for the course.  Check the entry requirements for the course on careersportal.ie or qualifax.ie.

missed out on pharmacy in trinity by random selection. Is there any way to know how many other people missed it by random selection too? Do you think there is any chance of me getting a place there? Thanks

  • 09:59
Im 5 points off my first choice which is commerce in ucc, do you think there will be second round offers for the course?

There is no way of telling for sure, however last year there were places offered in round two for this course and the points dropped by 5 points so there is hope.
  • 10:02
I have been offered my first choice but I really want my third choice level 8 , should I refuse my first two choice's or could that mean I may not be offered my third choice?

If you refuse your first choice you will not get offered your third choice. The only way you would get your third choice would be that if you did not have enough points for your first and second choice, provided that higher points were needed for these two.

If course 3 is at the same college as your offer today you could see if your college offers a transfer service.
  • 10:04
I needed 405 points for my course in UCD, but got 400 points. I was offered my level 6/7 course on the CAO this morning. I was wondering, if i get my exams re-checked, can I be reassessed and offered my 405 point, level 8 choice?

Yes you can and then you can opt to stay at your level6/7 course or move to UCD.

What's was the points for Arts in UL?

    440
  • 10:06
If I accept Commerece in NUIG would it be possible to transfer to UL after a year or 2. If yes would I have to start at year 1 again.

Transfers can take place but are looked at on a case by case basis and depend on a myriad of issues.  The golden rule generally is however that you must have had the points originally to get into the course you want to transfer onto.  I would give UL a ring to get their views on this.
  • 10:08
How do find out what the points for Arts in Ul were this year?

The 2013 round one cut off points for courses are on the CAO website or in today's Irish Times.

I got 500 points and was looking for Science. I have missed out by 5 points and been offered BA instead ( really don't want BA). What are the chances of being offered Science in the second round?

The demand for Science courses have increased this year . However, the points could come down. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing. Whether the points will come down or not will depend on the number of people who take up on this offer. The more that decline then obviuosly the more place sthat will become available.

Didn't get a Level 8 Offer but got level 7, thinking about repeating Leaving. If I do not take up the level 7 can I still stay in the system for the 2nd round offer on level 8.

Yes. You will stay in the system.
  • 10:12
Is there any way of adding a course I have the points for? My course jumped by 10 points to 505 and I have 495... But in Glaway it's 460?? Thanks

No there is no way of adding a new course at this stage unless this course comes under vacant places. Check this out on www.cao.ie vacant places.

How does one defer a year?

One should contact the admissions office of the college in question and explain clearly their reasons for deferring. The college will then inform the CAO directly of the student’s deferral.

In rare cases deferral may not prove possible.

  • 10:15
My sister got 415 points and got offered social science however she does not want to take it - she has disability nursing down after social science - what are they chances of her not taking social science and getting nursing? thanks

If Nursing is below Social Science then she will not be offered it.  Once she offered social science everything below that is effectively gone and she will not get any offers for those courses.  In the CAO system you can always hope to move up but never down.
  • 10:16
Where can i see what points courses were this year, 2013?

The Irish Times  have a supplement , College choice 2013. You will find it all in that.

My daughter got her first choice (medicine in Trinity) but i don't know if I can  afford to send her. Do you know what the fees are or if they are going to go up what they might be? I've already checked and we're not entitled to a grant.

The maximum rate of the student contribution (registration fee) for the academic year 2013-2014 is €2,500.   In Budget 2013 it was announced that the student contribution will be €2,750 in 2014-2015 and €3,000 in 2015-2016. TCD will acept payment in 2 instalments. Don't forget your local credit union who may be able to help also. (From another reader)

I applied for the photography courses in 2012 but got rejected after working on a portfolio for two years. I went to a plc course and applied again but still haven't gotten any offers. I mainly want DIT. Do you know if the course is full ?

It is likely that all places on this course have been offered at this stage.  If you have a specific query about admission to the course especially as there are portfolios involved, it might be no harm giving the DIT admissions office a ring.

What are the points for computer applications in DCU now?

405 points is the cut off for round one today.
  • 10:27
If I am offered my 4th choice can I decline and be offered my 5th in the next round?

No.  You can always hope to move up your order of preference list but you can never move down.  In your case everything below your 4th preference is now effectively gone.
  • 10:35
I got offered my 4th choice in my CAO but I wanted the first it is Commerce in Nuig and the point requirements were 340 last year and I got 370 and completed the minimum requirements, does that mean I should get that offer in round 2? please help

The points for Commerce in NUIG today are 375 so you are 5 points short.  It is possible the points could drop in round 2 and you might be offered a place but here is no guarantee of this so you should strongly consider accepting your prefenece place today.
  • 10:35
My girl did not get the LC results she expected & is in shock. have requested to see scripts, this morn she was offered a level 7 choice, she is 40 pts short for her level 8 which is all she wants, how can i help, what are her options, repeat is a no

How about taking a year out and reapplying through the CAO next year for a similar cours ewith lower points?

She could use a PLC course as a progression route. She would need to check to see if this level 8 offers a route for FETAC applicants.

She could also keep an eye out on vacant places on www.cao.ie. If she is interested in any of these courses she can apply for them straight away.

I hope that things work out for her.

What are the points for Veterinary in UCD?

    575*
  • 10:37
I was offered a level 7 and no level 8. In order to be eligible for level 8 in 2nd round must I first deline my first round offer. If I accept my level 7 can I still be eligible for an offer on Level 8 course in 2nd round

Yes whether you accept or reject your level 7 you will still be eligible for ann offer on level 8 courses in round 2.

    Good luck.

Can you tell me what points arts, arts international and film and screen media were in UCC ?

Arts 335, Arts International 430, Film and screen media 445.

If I defer a place this year but the points for that course rise next year, could I lose my place?

No your place will be kept for you regardless of how points go in 2014.
  • 10:46
Photography in DIT with a portfolio was 630. i only got 565 points. Do you think there is any chance i could get offered a place in the second round?

Please read mails below regarding this topic. 65 points would be a big drop but you never know. None of us will know for definite till the 28 August.

Have you other alternatives? Mail us if you need help.

Hi My daughter received 5A2 in Higher plus C2 in Maths - just missing her first choice Physio in UCD by 5 points. Getting 4 subjects rechecked . Can't believe it mid Oct before recheck results out - Do UCD have to offer her place then

Colleges do their utmost to accommodate students in the current year if at all possible. However, they do advise students to consider deferral until the following year, since they may be taking on a course that is already several weeks into the first 12 week semester.

If students opt to start a course several weeks into term, they are advised to contact the Student Advisor for their particular subject area. The advisor will give them orientation and advice on what they have missed.

The Programme Office and academics in the subject / course area try to help as much as possible. However applicants are also advised that special provision cannot be made for assessments if they have missed the start of term.

  • 10:49
My son got a fantastic 515 points in his leaving and is offered his second choice. If he gained 15 points more in rechecks he would have the minimum for his first choice. Could he secure a place this year for next year in his first choice course?

Not sure I understand the question.  If he gets an extra 15 points in October and becomes entitled to his first choice he must be offered that in October.  However if the college cannot create a place at that stage they may offer a defered place for the following year (2014 entry).  If the college offers a place in October it is also possible for your son to seek a deferal until the following year.  Hope this answers your question.
  • 10:51
Hi. I got 485 and wanted primary teaching in Maynooth which went up 30 points to 495. Do you think i might get it in round 2? Also, I'm getting a subject rechecked, what do you think chances are of getting it if my points go up?

Please refer to mails on this topic below. Ten points off is not totally out of reach. Whether or not points will fall will depend on the first round take up. If you get an upgarde and you go up to 495 you will be offered a palce.

    Good luck.
  • 10:54
My daughter got her 2nd choice to do Arts but says she can use this to go on to primary school teaching (her first choice) how does this happen

If she does her Arts degree and gets an honours degree (2.2) she can then apply for a place on a postgraduate course in Primary teaching.  These are generally 2 year courses but have a lot of competition for places.  This is now a very common route into primary teaching.  It is also good because if you daughter changes her mind about teaching she is not locked into it and could pursue other postgraduate options.
  • 10:57
hi, please help me XD I got 445 pnts (incl the extra 25pnts) I got my 8th choice- DCU Business Studies International (445pnts) Will there be a possibility that I will get my first choice-Computer Science & Business (465points) ? Should I wait ?

There is a chance but no guarantee so I would seriously consider accepting your 8th choice and then you will still remain in the running for a higher preference place in the next rounds, but at least you have a good course accepted just in case there are no more offers.
  • 10:59
my sister got 400 and had computer applications in DCU as her first choice. as the points for that are now 405, what are her options? re: rechecks, second offers... etc.

Application for viewing of scripts have to be back to the school where they sat their exams by today. The student must be there to view the script and has the option of bringing someone else along. There is no fee for the viewing of scripts but there is a fee fro appeals. This is refundable if granetd n upgrade. If you then have sufficient points for DCU you will be offered a place.

Round 2 points - will depend on the first choice up take of this course. You will have to wait till August 28th.
  • 11:02

I am 10 points shy off the points for BESS in Trinity. If i get a re-check and jump up 10+ plus points , will i be offered a place? Or will all places be taken by mid october ,even if my points end up being higher than someone who is in the course?

If you jump up ten points you will get offered a place.

    Good luck.

  • 11:10
As offers appeared , I'm disappointing I got offer Hospitality management which is only 300 points , the course that i wanted i didn't get as it i got 360 points and the course that i wanted appeared 365. I would like to know if there still any chan

Of course there is a chance. Points may go down in round 2 and you are quite close. Nobody will know for definite till teh second round offers come out on August, 28th.

Be sure to pursue a course that your interested in otherwise you run teh risk of dropping out. Also the points for each course are gotten from the interaction of supply and demand for that course. Points don't tell you if the course is good or not.

    Best of luck.
  • 11:11
I recieved 10 distinctions in a fetac 5 nursing course last year and applied to nursing in 2012 and 2013 with 405 points also. I still didnt get any level 8 nursing offers will I get 2nd round or is there a way of appealing directly to the college

Unfortunately there are so few places for FETAC applicants on nursing courses that it becomes a lottery for the applicants who have acheived the max points score from their FETAC award.  you could ring the colleges involved but realistically I don't think there is much that they can do.  There is a system in place and the CAO are rigorous in applying it.
  • 11:12
I got offered my second choice but I am getting some exam re-checks done. Do I need to let the cao or college know about the re-checks?
No. If you accept your second choice and then go up in rechecks you will be offered either to stay where you are or go to your first choice (provided that you now have the points for this course).

You won't know teh outcome of your rechecks until mid October. Please read mail below on thsi topic.
  • 11:14

I got 415 points and was offered psychiatric nursing which was my second choice . General nursing was my first choic and it dropped to 415 what are my chances of getting it ?

You may not of satisfied entry requirements  for teh general nursing? If this is so then you will not be offered it in 2013 CAO offers.

    Could this be possible?

  • 11:15

If i accept the level 8 course that i got offered now, will i get a level 8 offer again in round 2???

It is possible if the other level 8s are above the one you have just been offered, however there is no guarantee that you will get any other offer.  Read some of the other questions for more answers similar to this.
  • 11:17
I missed my first choice by 5 points, if I accept my 2nd choice could I still be offered my 1st choice in the second round offers?

My son got 415 points and missed UCC Science by 5 points. The review process for the leaving will not be completed until after the CAO offer deadlines. What happens if his points increase by 5 on review?

If you accept a 4th place offer hoping to get your 3rd in the second round and subsequently don't get your 3rd and then opt to repeat the leaving, will you still have to pay the course fee for the course you accepted?

No. You do not have to pay the course fee until you register with a HEI.

I've gotten 2 offers one level 8 I have no real interest in the level 8 I've been offered and the parents have a serious problem with the level 6/7 course. If I accept one of these offers can i get a 2nd round offer?! THANK YOU!

Yes, you can get offered a level 8 in round 2 .
  • 11:24
Could you tell me generally to points go up or down for second round offers?

Points can only either remain unchanged or go down.
  • 11:25

If my sister gets her exams rechecked can they bring her down instead of up!?

Yes, thats why it is always a good idea to view the scripts before sending them for a recheck.

Does the UCC course Public Health BSc (Hons) - CK706 have enough science/nutrition content to allow a successful graduate study a post grad course in Dietetics, thus qualify as a dietitian please? And if so, where would you recommend? Thanks

I think that it would be wise for you to contact UCC and make this enquiry. They will also be able to tell you where there graduates have gone onto.

    Best of luck.

I have 405 points and nine distinctions in a level five nursing course. I applied for nursing in waterford both last year and this year to no avail on either fetac or cao. Can I appeal directly to the college or what are my options..

My son is 10 points off psychology in Trinity, and its all he really wants. what are the chances of him getting it in round 2?

I have to say I think it is unlikely that the points will drop this much (although never say never).  The points last year remained at 565* but because of the random selection astrix they may have issued some places in round two without the points changing.  I would proceed as if it is not going to happen and be pleasantly surprised if it does.
  • 11:31
What are the points for UCD BA Degree - joint honours (full time) DN500

    340 points
  • 11:32
only got 490 points and want to study psychology in DCU which is 500. i am getting some papers rechecked but was offered a course that i dont really want to do as it is in a college i dont like. help, what do i do
Ok, well you may come up in rechecks or the course may come down in round 2. Try not to panic just yet. I would suggest that you concentrate on the course as opposed to the college. Or maybe look into doing first year in the college you don't like and see if they offer a transfer service that would allow you to switch to a similar course in a different college. Not all colleges offer this service. I would advise you to ring the admissions office of this college.
  • 11:33
Is it possible for Nutraceuticals in Health & Nutrition in DIT ro go down by 5 points? i got 400 but the course is 405 this year?

It is possible that courses will come down buy unfortuantely we will not know this until round 2 comes out.
  • 11:33

My son did not get any offers. He got 275 points. For all his level 8 picks he did not reach the min entry requirements and was not offered any of his 3 level 7 picks. Do you think he might get something in round 2?

He will not be offered any of his level 8s at any time if he has not met the entry requirements for the courses.  Depending what he has in his level 6/7 list he could be offered a place in the next rounds if places become available.  Has he applied for any FETAC PLC courses?  If he completes a FETAC course he could apply next year to the CAO on the basis of his results in the FETAC course and not his Leaving Certificate.

I failed french , which my whole class did terrible. If i get it rechecked, will i still have time to get an offer to UCD or Maynooth ? as thats all ive applied for and I'm worried i will not get to college this year ? Please help

Yes you will hav etime. Rechecks come back mid October.

What happens if I want to take my third choice and not my first. I will just equal the points needed for my 2nd choice so if theses were to go up. Would I then be offered my 3rd choice even though it's a different College than my first choice?

Have you received an offer yet today?

If you do not have suffiecient points for your first and second choice you will be offered your third.

Howvever, if you have the required points for your first or second choice you will no longer be offered any course preference below this.
    Good luck
  • 11:45
I didn't get offered anything.. I got 375 points and was expecting to get offered a business course in UL that was 375 last year but that's up to 410 now, little chance that'll come down in round 2??

It could come down but you need it to come down by quite a bit. Whether it will come down or not will depend on the number of people who decline the offer hence offering places to waiting candidates .
  • 11:46
I got 450 for media studies in maynooth ,course pts last year were 455 but dont know am i that close to this years points?? if they have gone way up then id accept my nxt offer but id prefer maynooth!

What are the points for Biological and Chemical sciences in UCC this year?

    445. Check out supplement in todays Irish Times.

Have been offered DT555- international business and French which was higher up on ny list of choices- but now actually want to do DT365 business and management which I had ranked lower, got 425 points ... Is there anything I can do, could I transfer after a year maybe ! Help!

You may be able to transfer once you registrar, if your college offers this service. Certain conditions will have to be met. Each HEI has it's own policy on this. I would advise you to contact the admissions office.
  • 11:53
My son got 365 but did not receive any cao offers this morning. He has been accepted for hear scheme and will this be taken into account if he applies for cao vacant places. Some courses have point requirements higher than 365. Thanking you in advance.

If your son applies for courses in the Vacant Places his acceptance onto the HEAR scheme should be taken into account if the courses are in colleges that are part of the HEAR scheme. These are listed on accesscollege.ie. Remember vacant places are generally offered in round 2 and we don't know what the points for these places will be.  it depends how many people apply for these places and what points they got.
  • 12:03
My daughter applied to college through the HEAR Scheme and was offered a place through it in DCU. This was her second choice on her CAO form but she has realised that instead of this she would prefer her third choice which in UCD. She has enough points for this course from her LC. Can she not accept the HEAR place , and if so will she be offered the lower points place? Also could she get the other benefits of the HEAR scheme without using the reduced points option?

Afraid not, once she has been offered here second choice all courses below this are effectively gone, even in the situation above with the HEAR scheme.  You can always hope to move up but not down.
  • 12:04
Is course with 230-250 points level 7 ? Not good ? It. And is all irish colleges are recognised abroad?

What determines course points is the interaction of supply and demand for the course. Some colleges have a smaller number of places and therfore, may require higher points than others.

The points do not tell you how good the course is. Students views will differ depending on their interests and likes.

All Irish Colleges would be recognised abroad through the National Qualification Framework.
  • 12:07
my daughter was offer arts in maynooth and hope to take this route to primary school . She wanted psychiatric nursing in DCU so you think she has any chance of an offer in round 2. She got 365 points . many thanks

Nursing courses can drop but not sure that they will drop that much. I imagine not as demand for nursing is too high. Nobody will know for definite till August 28th.

    Best of luck.
  • 12:08
I got 385 points and the course i want is 395. if i appealed some results and raised 10 points am i guaranteed to be offered this course or is there a possibility it will be full

If you get 10 extra points in October from the rechecks then these are effectively backdated to today and whatever you would have been offered today with the extra points you must be offered in October.  So if you had 10 extra points today it is likely you would have been offered the course in question and so would be offered it in October.
  • 12:09
My son got 485 points his first choice was Coporate Law which is 355 his got his second choice with is Civil Law 415 why was he not offer his first choice?

That seems strange. Check to see what the course requirements were for his first choice and see if he has satisfied them. check out www.cao.ie or www.qualifax.ie
  • 12:11
I got 335 points, my 1st choice was Arts in UCD which is 340, do you think seen as i have all the grade requirements minus the 5 points, i will get a 2nd round offer? In the past have they sent out 2nd round offer for this course before? Thanks.

This course was 355 in round one last year and 350 in round 2.  Can't say for definite until round 2, August 28th.

    The best of luck.

hi , i got 500 points and have been offered mh208 which is my 7th choice but i missed out on ucd dn200 by 5 points , is there a chance i will be offered that course in round 2 ?

Yes, if the point sgo down or your grades go up. The points for this course remained teh same in round 1 and 2 last year. This does not mean that it will be the same this year. It will depend on whether many places become available due to people rejecting their first offer.

    Best of luck.
  • 12:17
I received 390 points in my leaving. i got offered a place in Waterford IT for psychiatric nursing. Although my intention was to go to Trinity or DCU (my first two choices). Is there a chance I could be offered a place here in second round offers?

You can still be offered courses above Waterford It. So if points fall and you have the necessary points need then you will be offered a place. You will not be offered any course preference below Waterford.

    Good luck.
  • 12:22
my daughter got 400 points and was hoping to get business in UL (375 last year, 410 this year). Is there any way of finding out what number she is in the list for subsequent offers for this course?

  • 12:23
I never got offered my first choice in the cao and my course when up 25 points l am 10 points down now is there a chance l could still get my first choice in the 2nd round

  • 12:26
I got offered a course in Maynooth which i dont want, i am 5 points short of the course i want in UCD. Can i begin repeating my exams as i wait to get my exmas re checked?

Yes. Rechecks come back mid October.

I have been offered Geography and sociology in TSM in trinity however I have since looked at the points and the minimum points needed for Geography are 450. I only got 445,is this a mistake by the CAO offering me this place ?

No, the cut off points for Geography and Sociology in TSM is 445*.  The points for the TSM are on the TCD website in admissions/undergraduate.

Hi.Had no LC results on CAO so got no offer.I have contacted them and sent LC number and exam year. Will I have to wait for Round 2 offers? Thank you.

I am not so sure if CAO put your results online. It may be a case that you did not get any offer sin round 1. If points fall and you now have the required points you should be offered a place.

    Is that ok?

  • 12:35
Is it likely for Psychiatric nursing points to drop for second round offers? Thank you in advance

Nursing courses have gone down before but not by a huge amount.
  • 12:36
is there any chance of taking ur 9th offer which u receive enough points for instead of ur 8th offer ?

No, unless they are in the same college and the college offers a transfer service.
  • 12:37
I have not got any offer on the cao website in the first round for medicine. Is there any chance for getting an offer in the second round?

Yes, if the points go down. This will depend on whether or not people accept it in first round offers.
  • 12:38
many thanks for fast response! what are her best subjects (she will def take music) as part of arts in maynooth to pursue primary school teaching ? where can she do her post grad

I am presuming she has here HC3 in Irish.  The most important thing is that she gets her honours degree so the best advice for Arts subjects is to pick the ones she thinks she will enjoy most and do best in.  Obviously subjects from the primary curriculum may be helpful but not essential.  Music is a good subject.  There are a number of places to do the course: St. Pats, Marino, Mary I in Limerick, privately in Hibernian College and also the UK is another possibility.
  • 12:39
i am waiting for the round 2 offers but i need to accept the course that i am offered by 26th , should i accept it first and then wait till the 29th ?

Accept it only if your interested in studying this course. Do you like the subjects etc? If the answer i syes well thenm accept it as you may receive offers higher up in preference to this at a later stage.
  • 12:40
Do you think pharmaceutical healthcare demand is high? What precentage you think it might do down? I need 5 less .thank you

You will know by the point sas to whether demand for this course is high or not. High points reflect high demand .Your close so lets hope that on August 28th it will go down by 5. Nobody will know until then.
  • 12:42
I got 450 points and need 460 points for my first choice. I am getting 2 scripts rechecked. If I come up to 460 points will I be offered my first choice, even if the points rise in round? i.e. do they go by first round or second rounds points?

Hi Dave, have a read of similar questions to this answered below.  The bottom line is if you get upgraded to 460 in October, those 460 points are backdated to today and whatever you would have been offered today with 460 points you must be offered in October.  So the first round points are the key figures.
  • 12:42
got offered psychiatric nursing in UCD with Fetac points (choice 7) I really wanted Athlone which is my first choice is there any chance that I may be offered Athlone

It is unlikely. I would advise you to contact CAO.

Well doneon doing so well and getting an offer.
  • 12:45
My daughter fell short for med she got 565 was offered pharmacy in ucc but would prefer trinity. Same points this year but random selection for trinity. What's likelihood of getting trinity in second round offers. Thank you.

This course fell in points last year for round 2 offers, so you never know. Nobody will know this till August 28th.

I hope that it works out for you.
  • 12:47
Hi, I applied for business (Cw018) in Carlow but I've just realised its in Wexford! Oh no, help?

Oh no. Have you the necessary points for Business in the Carlow campus? If so phon eteh admissions office and see if they could facilitate you with a transfer.

Get back to us if needs be. Good luck.
  • 12:48
I got offered a place in ID Nursing in UCC but was hoping for General Nursing, I have the exact points for general , 450, what are the chances of getting the offer for General in the 2nd round?

Unfortunately, you are in a random pool of applicants on 450, hence the astrix.  Colleges generally try to eliminate these astrixed scores if possible.  There is no way of finding out how many applicants are in this pool and hence whata re the chance of getting out of it.  If more places come available in Nursing ( which is a long shot)  your position in this random list will determine if you are entitled to a place or not.  This process is explained in the back of the CAO handbook if you want to have a look.
  • 12:55
I am 15 points of GY401 Engineering (Undenominated) will it come down that much in 2nd round offers?

I really don't know the answer to this. You will have to wait for second round on Aug 28th. There was no change on points for this course for round oneand two last year.
  • 12:57
Hey, I didn't get my offer for Arts (BA) in on the hear scheme could I get accepted in round down 2 ? Also what's the vacant places about ? I don't quite understand, tyanks

You coul dhet it in round two if points go down. Have you satisfied the requirements for HEAR and BA Arts?

Vacant places are a list of vacancies on courses that have not been filled in certain colleges. This will open up tomorrow and you can apply for them straight away.
  • 12:59
My son had medicine nuig as his 1st choice. However he got 575 and has been offered Pharmacy at RCIS-his 3rd choice. If he accepts the offer, can he still accept at the 2nd round of offers if offered medicine(nuig 739)?What are his chances at 728?

Yes, if he accepts Pharmacy, he will still remain in the running for his two higher preferences and will be offered the places if he becomes entitled to them.  Based on his score of 728  and given NUIG is 739 with an astrix I think it would be a long shot for him to get an offer of a place.  From 728 to 739 alone is a long gap to close.
  • 13:00
My son has been offered his 4th choice. Does he have to say no to this in the hope of reaching a higher choice in round 2? If so does he risk losing a place? Or if he accepts his 4th choice, could he be offered a different course in round 2?

No. If he accepts this he is still in the running of getting offered higher preferences.  He will not accept losing a place on course 1,2 and 3 by accepting course 4. If he doesn't accept course 4 and nothing changes he may have no college to go to.
  • 13:01
U say round 2 is the 28th is it not the 29th ?

Round 2 of CAO offers online on August 28th and by post by 29th August.

  • 13:04
My HEAR wasn't applied to my NUIG applications, resulting in me being offered my 4th choice at NUI Maynooth, I really do not want to do this course but I fall short for the points I need for NUIG. What can I do now?

I would contact HEAR and query this. Look up www.acccesscollege.ie . Get back to us if needs be.

What about round 2? You might get it in this round.

See if Maynooth can offer you a transfer to NUI Galway after year one? Contact NUIM admissions office.

  • 13:05
My son got offered accounting and finance. To teach second level does he need to do something after.

He needs to apply for a Higher Diploma in Education. This will qualify him to teach at post primary level. This diploma is now spread over 2 years.
  • 13:07
My friend got the exact points for Pharmacy in RCSI (555) but didn't get offered her place. What chances does she stand for getting this in Round 2? Could the points go down for it and then would she stand a better chance?

Random selection has been used to fill the last few places on this course.  This arises when maybe there is one more place on the course but the next maybe 5 people on the merit list for the course all have the same points and are equally entitled to this last place.  So one person is randomly picked and an astrix beside the score indicates that not everyone on this points score got a place on the course.  The problem for your friend is that we don't know how many people are in the random pool with 555 points so it is hard to know her chances of getting a place in the next round.  The only way the points will go down for this course is if they clear all the random pool of applicants and move to the people with lower points if places become available in which case your friend would already have been offered a place.
  • 13:09
received my third choice however would have preferred to get my number one choice, do I "accept"my third choice today and wait for round two to hope to get my first choice next week

Yes but only if you are interested in studying your third choice. You are still in the running for being offered higher preference courses.

  • 13:10
Is there any chance that there will be vacant places in Arts at NUIG?? I put it as my 9th choice and now I really regret it as the points for Arts (journalism) were way higher than anticipated (480 compared to projected 325-350)

I would say almost certainly not I'm afraid.
  • 13:12
Got 505 points but have fallen 5 short of Business & Law in UCD...likelihood of 2nd round offer? I hope to get those points in the re-checks though....

ok thi sis what happens if you go up a grade from rechecks..

Colleges do their utmost to accommodate students in the current year if at all possible. However, they do advise students to consider deferral until the following year, since they may be taking on a course that is already several weeks into the first 12 week semester.

Are Round Two offers only for courses higher on the choice list or could someone be given something lower on the list?

Only for courses higher on your choice that what you have been already offered.
  • 13:14
If my daughter accepts her offer for Intellectual Disability Nursing will she still be in the pool of people with 450 for General? Your help is much appreciated

Yes she willl providing that her preference for General nursing ia above what she has been offered today.

Congratulations and the best of luck.
  • 13:14
If my daughter accepts her offer for Intellectual Disability Nursing will she still be in the pool of people with 450 for General? Your help is much appreciated

Sorry, we would need more details to answer this question, i.e. positionof courses, points, etc.
  • 13:18
Yes I have, met the requirements for both the hear and Arts in ucc, tommorrow so do I go onto my cao nd try for Arts again is it ?

You obviously don't have the required first round points?

Round 2 is available online on August 28th and by post on August 29th. Points may fall and if you have the necessary points you will be entitled to an offer.
  • 13:18
Is it common for points to fall in round 2 ? And have many courses been seen to make more spaces available in the past?

Yes, if more places are offered in round two, they are generally offered at lower points.  Generally it is not colleges making more places for round two, but rather people who have been offered places in round one are not accepting the places for some reason and hence these places are then offered to the next most entitled applicants on the next points down.
  • 13:20
I was not allocated my Dale pts as I should. I've been offered my 4th choice as a result. How to I get my Dare pts allocated so I get my 1st choice which I'm eligible for with my Dare pts?

How do you know you have not been allocated your DARE points?  If you feel there is a problem with this you could contact CAO from the contact us form on the CAO website and quote your CAO number and why you feel there is a problem.
  • 13:20
got my second choice which is social science in UCD but I really want my first choice which is Law with social justice in UCD. I'm 20 points off so is it totally realistic to hope that I could get it in the 2nd round and if I get upgrades?

20 points ia a good bit but you never know. Round 2 offers available online on August 28th. You could also get upgrades so who knows. Phone the UCD admissions office and enquire about transfers. Not all HEI offer this service and all have differnet policies regarding transfers.

    The best of luck.
  • 13:22
General Nursing is her 2nd option and Intellectual Disability Nursing her 4th, she got 450 points

What colleges are we talking about Yvonne?  Off to lunch will have a look when I get back for your reply.

General Nursing is her 2nd option and Intellectual Disability Nursing her 4th, she got 450 points

I have been offered my second choice, Architecture in UCC 400 points, if I accept this could I still be offered my first choice which was Architecture in UCD 465 in the second round? Thanks

Yes you still keep yourself in the running for receiving higher offers in round 2.

    Good luck.
  • 14:08
Is there much point applying through cao if you got under 200 points in the Leaving cert ??

Yes. You should be looking at applying for level 6 or 7 courses. These are usually offered in IT's and Independent colleges. One could start at a level 6 and progress right the way through to a PHD.

Check out www.cao.ie for level 6/7.

    Best of luck.
  • 14:09
Hi, Im only 5 points of my frist choice, i got 2 offers today.. if I accpet one of them can i still get offered my first place in the second round and do you think I will if Im 5 points of?

Yes, you can.  If you become entitled to a higher preference choice you will be offered it and it is up to you whether to accept it or stay with your first round offer.  There is no way of knowing whether there will be second round offers for courses as it all depends on what the people who have received the first round offers do.  If all first round places are accepted then there will be no further places offered in the next rounds.
  • 14:11
Hi - I want to do PE and Biology in DCU but I fell short of the points. Is there any way I can do PE and Biology in DCU without the points? I did get a Science course in DCU and wondered if I could transfer over at any point?

I would not think so especially initally. I would advise you to phone the admissions office in DCU to see would this be possible at some stage.

Best wishes and good luck. Hope that things work out for you.

daughter got 738 points needed 739 points for med galway, any chance she'll get offered it on 2nd round?

Nobody will know this until August 28th when the round 2 offers are made available online. The points for med have gone down before so lets hope that this one goes your way.

Congratulations on achieving such good scores.
  • 14:20
must wait til round 2 of offers and hope I get Arts (BA) in praying, but according the Hear you must go too the orientation week on the 26th-30th, but sure I can't I must wait for an offer, so do I wait ?

Offers are available online August 28th. Have you explained your situation to the access officer at NUIMayooth? I recommend that you do this www.accesscollege.ie

  • 14:22
I'm 5 points short of primary teaching in Mary I. What are the chances the points will come down in 2nd round. I plan to get some papers rechecked.

It is unlikely that the points for Mary I will come down again.  But remember if you become entitled to a higher preference choice you will be offered it and it is up to you whether to accept it or stay with your first round offer.  There is no way of knowing whether there will be second round offers for courses as it all depends on what the people who have received the first round offers do.  If all first round places are accepted then there will be no further places offered in the next rounds.  If you get papers rechecked then the increased points are back dated to today.  Read one or two questions below where we explain about this.

My daughter got 42 points (in the top 1%) in the IB and didn't get her first choice for Psychology at TCD. We were told that non Irish Leaving Cert applicants were dealt with in a different pool, she is a European applicant. Can you comment?

I think you need to contact TCD admissions on this one.

is it possible for nursing in DCU to drop from 400 to 390? or in Trinity from 410 to 390? Or what is the likelihood of this happening? thanks

It is possible but nobody will know till August 28th. Points fell for some nursing courses in Trinity last year but not in DCU.
  • 14:28
How many points can the heat scheme help me out with if I fall abit short still in round 2 ?

It's very hard to know, we are not given a break down of the points concessions HEAR candidates achieve.  I would ring the access office of the college where you are hoping to gai a place and ask them about your situation.
  • 14:29
I got 490 in my leaving cert. I got my 10th choice today and i am very unhappy with it. I will not accept this offer. I really want to get law in UCD which is 500 points. What are my chances of getting an offer in the 2nd round on the 28th ?

I don't know and nobody will know this till August 28th. The closer your points are to round one offers the better the chance you have if points are to fall. Hold tight.

    Best of luck.
  • 14:31
Hi I was wondering how difficult it was to transfer to a differant college, I have got a place in arts at NUIG but I want to continue in UCD next year is there anything I need to do now and is it possible? thanks

Contact the admissions office for both colleges. You will have to have the points for Arts in UCD in order to qwualify for a transfer.

    Best of luck.
  • 14:33
I am five points short for ucd commerce how likely is it that i will get offered it in round two.

Unfortunately we can't really say, it depends on the those who got the first round offers and how they reply.  But you're in a good position on 5 points short as you're obviously very close.  The only problem is that commerce courses are very popular this year so they may not have any unaccepted places for round two.
  • 14:34
Hey are there any back ways into commerce in cork. Like a plc which my daughter could do in cork for the year or something? Thank you

    Students Presenting FETAC Qualifications;

    Entry Routes:

    BBSAX: Administration
    5M2111: International Trade
    5M2102: Business Studies
    5M2069: Marketing

With distinctions (i.e. 80% or greater) in 5 modules which must include any 4 of the following modules:

B20001 Accounting - Manual and Computerised
    B20005 Business Administration
    B20017 Marketing Practice
B20029 or C20139 Statistics or Mathematics
B20131 or B20132 Business Law or Legal Studies
    B20151 Applied Economics

It is expected that there will be up to 5 places available in CK201 for students presenting with these qualifications.

Entry to degree programmes at UCC is available on a competitive basis to students who present with one of the FETAC qualifications listed above. However, students must meet the component requirements and have achieved distinctions (i.e. 80% or greater) in five component awards as outlined on the following pages. The FETAC award scheme is presently being updated and the course codes are changing. Please check the FETAC website www.fetac.ie for these changes.

    FETAC Scoring Scheme
Components that have a credit value of 15 receive the following points:
    • Distinction 3.333 points
    • Merit 2.222 points
    • Pass 1.111 point

The scores for each of the best 8 Awards taken at a single sitting are added up to give a total best tally, to a maximum of 400 points. UCC only counts the best 8 modules. Places reserved for FETAC applicants are then offered in order of merit based on ranking.

Can you explain why lyit early childhood education level 8 is 275 in your paper but level 6/7 ilyit is documented ar 360 is this a mistake appreciate your reply many thanks

No, this is accurate and it merely indicates that the level of demand for the level 8 course is less than the level 6/7 version.  It may also reflect that applicants may not have met the requirements for a level 8 course such as 2 HC3s, etc.
  • 14:44
Tk u for reply. TCD Dare person told me that my pts hadn't been allocated and it was a competition to get in. CAO says it works on a 'reduced points' entry. Can't get reply from CAO to see how this works. Can you help?

You need to put all your details in an email to CAO about this.  Use the contact us option on the CAO site.  They generally try to clear all emails sent to them by the end of the day so be patient.  Make sure and give them your CAO number.
  • 14:45

Hi - sat LC last year and went to UCC. Reapplied to CAO this year but go no offers at all. 2012 LC results seem to have been ignored. How is this possible and what can be done?

Check to see if you have satisfied minimum entry requirements for each course that you have applied for. They would not ignore 2012 LC students who reapplied. If you seem to have satisfied entry requirements I would advise you to contact CAO immediately.

  • 14:46

I am short 10 points for Computer Science in UCC, which has increased from 340 points to 430 points - a ridiculous 90 point rise. Is it likely for me to get an offer in 2nd round offers?

  • 14:48
Would it be too optimistic to expect an offer in the second rounds with a CAO point of 425 and a 7th course choice of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Chemistry in NUI Maynooth ?

First round came down from last year suggesting that the demand for this course has fallen. How many will accept their offer on this course? Who knows and this is what will determine whether points fall further. You will have to hold tight until August 28th.

    Best of luck.

I received an offer for bsc orndinary deg health & leisure in cit. I have already received a place on sport & rec fetac in csn not 100 % on which option to take? researched what courses entail heard heath & leisure course is difficult by few people

It depends on which course offers the subjects you like most. A level 7 is a higher qualification than a FETAC. You should choose the one you think you would enjoy most. Choosing subjects that you like will make studying them easier.

    Good luck with your choice.

Are there any back ways into doing commerce in cork, like a plc for a year or so?
This question has been answered below.
  • 14:53
my dad had accepted an offer i got while am thinking of repeating. is it possible to repaet leaving cert even if you've accepted an offer.

Yes,  but out of courtesy you should contact the HEI in question to let them know that you no longer want to accept their offer. It will give the HEI the chance to offer your place to someone else.

    Good luck with your choice.
  • 14:54
My son's UCC Science Course is at 420, he has 415. If the second round drops to 415 will all at 415 get offered a place or how do the CAO decide who on 415 will get a second round offer for this course?

Not necessarily all people on 415 will get a place.  When all the replies come in from round 1 and it emerges for example that 6 people for whatever reason have not accepted their offer then these 6 places are offered to the next 6 most entitled applicants.  If the next 10 people are all on 415 then random selection will be used to determine which of the 10 applicants will be offered the 6 places in round 2.  415* will appear as the new cut off which indicates that random selection was used and not everyone on 415 got a place on the course.

Hi. Im just wondering where can the points be viewed for the general public as to the first round points, or do we have to wait until the places have been accepted?

The Irish Times have a supplement that contains all this detail.
  • 14:57
My daughter may take year out to reconsider options-are there any courses available for coming year only that wont knock out free fees when she formally accepts cao offer next year?

Your daughter can do a PLC and this will not affect her free fees next year. She could also sign up to a course in  a fee paying college. Neither will effect her free fees next year.
  • 14:58
Is there still a chance that students who have gotten just below 700 can get medicine? Whether it be the 2nd or 3rd round? Or are they completely out of the running altogether?

Nobody will know this for definite till August 28. Personally I doubt that they will drop that much.
  • 15:00
Can you defer a course to sit the Leacing Cert again?

Yes but you must keep this deferred course as choice one on your CAO application 2013/2014. Otherwise you loose your deferred place.

f a course drops from 420 points in round 1 to 415 points on round 2, will all applicants on 415 points be offered places. If not how do the CAO distinguish between those on 415 points who are offered a 2nd round place and those that are not?

Providing that there is sufficient amount of places available for all applicants on 415 points. If not then applicants will be picked on a random sample basis.
  • 15:05
I need two C3's higher level and 6 passes for my level 8 course. I have only higher level C3 and 310 points ( mim requirement is 300). Will I get my level 8 offer in round two

I am afraid not as you have not satisfied the minimum requirements and will not get an offer on any round.

    Sorry.

what is the minimum leaving cert points required for medicine excluding the hpat

Interesting question.  This score if it exists will vary from course to course .  We don't have that information here, you would have to contact CAO for this, if indeed they can give it to you.

My son's cao statement shows OTH where the LC should be. and doc saying they have not been authorised to offer a place. Why isn't LC listed. He got 385 points - course is 350. Rang CIT and they say that he is eligible. What is OTH.

I am looking into this. In the meantime try contacting CAO. Will be in touch once I get feedback.

I got 410 in LC but missed my course by 5 pts ( DT365) is there any chance I will get offered it next week or am I being unrealistic ?

My son received 595 pointsbut did not get his choice of medicine courses due to Hpat. He was offered Nanoscience in Trinity which went up to 585. If he does not accept it could it go up in points next year . Can he defer and try Hpat and med again If he does not except it, yes points can go up next year. Howvever, if he defers his place then he is sure to get in on 2013 points for this course. If he chooses to defer this course to next year then he must have this course as first choice on his CAO application 2013/14. Otherwise he loses his deferred place and enters into the point race of 2014.

He should know his HPAT result by change of mind time next year so I reckon that this plan could work.

Is it possible to moved down on account for a CAO mistake in the order of your preferences?

No. One can only move up in their order of preferences.
  • 15:17
Can I still get a 2nd round offer if I do not accept my 1st offer but have already applied for a deferral. Could I then subsequently defer the 2nd round offer if I got that? Thanks

Yes and yes.  You remain in control all the time as to what you want to do with your offers.  Remember there are no guarantees with deferals, it's up to the colleges to decide to grant them or not.
  • 15:19
I've accepted Biological and Chemical sciences in UCC, but can I transfer to general science in DCU through the year even though it wasn't on my CAO, I have enough points for both courses.

I seriously doubt it. You may be able to seek a transfer after year one if the courses are similar in content. All colleges different policies regarding transfer services. I recommend that you contact HEI involved.

    Good luck
  • 15:19
If I accept my first round course can I still accept my 2nd round choice If I get it?Im 5 points off commerce in NUIG hoping to get it in the second round?

Yes you can.  Have a look at some similar questions/answers below.  How likely it is that NUIG will offer any more round two places in commerce is questionable though as demand for places was very high.

are there any alternative routes into medicine in Ireland? I have 540 points but even with the hpat scores i fall short of courses in ireland. I dont want to go the postgrad route or travel abroad if i can help it. Any courses that would get me in?

Would you contemplate repeating your HPAT next year. Otherwise you will have to go the postgrad route or aboard. If you are going to reapply for medicine nin 2013/14 you will have to resit HPAT anyways.

I have been offered my first preference in DCU but now i really want my second which is in DCU too, i have satisfired all requirement and have the points so if i decline my first choice offer now will or could i be offered the second ?

No, you will not be offered any choice below your first preference if you have been offered your first choice. Whether you accept or reject offer 1 you will not be offered choice 2. Get in touch with admisssions in DCU and enquire about the possibility of a course transfer once you registrar.

    Good luck.
  • 15:29
Do I inconvenience anybody by asking to view my papers when I have enough points for my first choice course? I would be interested to see more out of curiosity than anything else...

There is no harm in asking. I imagine that many teachers will be helping other students viewing scripts. Be sure to view them and kill that curiosty.

    Best of luck.
  • 15:29

I have already accepted a place on a plc course. I did not receive a course that I want on my CAO today. The plc wants me to register and pay the fees next Tuesday 27th. If I receive an offer in the 2nd round will I be refunded the fees.

You may or may not, it depends on the PLC college.  On many occcasions they will not refund fees so I would talk to the college in question and ask them what their policy is.  The 2nd round offers are out on the 28th so could they hold the place until the following day so you would know if you have a 2nd round offer or not.

  • 15:38
If i repeat leaving cert in 2014 can i carry points from 2013?

You can choose to use either 2014 points or 2013.Be sure to put down this years examination number in your new application and then this should be no problem. You canot combine subjects from two sittings for points purposes.
  • 15:39

Are points for Digital Media Maynooth likely to come down much in second round.
My son got 325 points and has satisfied the entry requirements. Thanks

This course ha scome down in points since last year. Courses can come down but nobody will know by exactly how much untill August 28th. 25 points would be quite a substantial drop.

    Good luck.

  • 15:50
I don't think you get me. I meant the CAO printed a mistake in their preferences on my application. I got my second choice (according to them) however I set it as choice 8. Can I be moved?

When did you notice this mistake?  Was the correct listing of choices on your statement of application record which you should have received?  Did you completer a change of mind?  I think you need to contact CAO immediately through their website and give them the details of this issue, but they will want to know the answers to the above questions.
  • 15:59

Sorry, still waiting for an answer regarding my query re deferral and the possibility of getting a 2nd round offer and then deferring that. Send query 2 hours ago approx. Thanks again.

Hi. I am not to clear on your question. You can only get offered courses that are of higher preference than what you have been already offered. Can you explain the deferral situation to me a bit more, please.

  • 16:01

am 5 points short of History at Trinity which is 470. History is quite a popular course so even with my 5 point shortage is it unlikely that they will have any vacancies?
Trinity does not tend to have too many vacancies up on vacant places. But we can never say never.. Cheek this out tomorrow and everyday on..

  • 16:04
My son has received a first round offer in a course outside his preferred career path. His 7th choice is nursing in GMIT which is 405 and he has a point tally of 400, is it possible he may be offered in round 2?

Your son can only receives offers of choices above the one he received today. He will not receive course choice slisted below the cours ethat he got offered today.
  • 16:05
If I defer my first offer do I still get my second offer?

    No.
  • 16:08
Can i get offered a vacant place on an preference lower than the one im offered?

Yes.  Eg. if you get offered your 4th choice preference and you see your 8th preference advertised in the vacant places and would like to apply for it, you can.  You insert the vacant place above your 4th choice and you will be offered the course if you become entitled to it.  This is the one occasion where you can move a course on your original CAO listing because it is an advertised vacant place.

Hi I am an asylum seeker and I have been in the country since 2007 and I am awaiting permission to stay in the country. I completed my leaving cert this year and got 490 points can you tell me if I can accept a place or not because of my status.

Yes, you can accept it. I would advice you to contact the relevant HEI fees department. You may need to fill out a fee status form. They should be able to tell you more with regard to payment or non payment of fees.

    The best of luck.

My son got 330 in LC wants BA Degree DN500 got offer this morning but not happy wants UCD is it likely to go down a further 10 points in round 2 & if so will everyone with 330 be offered it. Thanks

Unfortunately we cannot say if it will go down at all in round 2, it all depends on the replies of the people who were offered round one places.  I would think 10 points would be a lot for it to go down.  Also if it does go down to 330 not necessarily everyone on 330 might be offered a place as random selection could come into play where there may be a lot of people on 330 looking for a limited number of places.
  • 16:15
CAO say no LC recorded. The OTH on the form means that they have an applic to HEAR. How can LC not be recorded? I have given them LC number now and they say it will be on their system on Friday and that it is up to CIT to decide. What are the chances

No LCE means that you did not tell CAO about doing the Leaving cert.

.OTH usually applies to exams other than LCE, FET and/or GCE

I don't know what the outcome will be but I suggest that you phone the admissions office in CIT.

Good luck. Hope that it works out for you.
  • 16:16
Is it possible that UCD will have vacant place in its BA Degree

This is most unlikely as it is a very popular and over subscribed degree.
  • 16:19
Hi, do you know if there is anywhere online where you can view previous year points differences between first and second round offers? Thanks

Cannot find round one and two of 2012 results online.  This info was given on Leaving cert supplements in newspapers last week.
  • 16:20
I got offered accounting in GMIT but its not my first choice, can I accept it and still get offered my higher preferences if the points come down in second and third round offere

Yes you can still get offered higher prefernceds than your offer today.
  • 16:21
I am not eligible to receive offers for my first 2 choices due to the points requirement. I got 570 but I did not get an offer for Pharmacy in TCD (565*) which was my third choice. Why?

You should have, in terms of points as the cut off this year is 565* as you indicate.  Did you meet all the course entry requirements?  If you did and you have calculated your points correctly then you need to contact CAO with your details and details of this issue.  They will come back to you fairly quickly.
  • 16:22
I received an offer for my first preference but I would rather do a lower preference course. Can I still get an offer through available/vacant places for the lower preference course.

Yes. If your lower offer appears on vacavnt places place it above your offered course.
  • 16:25
My cousin is applying from England and has all the right points for Law at Trinity. For some reason the information on the CAO is incorrect and so was not offered a place on teh first round. Can she do anything about this ?

She needs to contact CAO with her CAO number and details of this issue.  They will come back to her fairly quickly.  Did CAO get her exam results?  I'm not sure what you mean by "the information on the CAO is incorrect".  But CAO should be able to help her out.
  • 16:28
Hi i have 455 points but did not get engineering stream in UCD or TCD.. Is it worth it to redo leaving cert and try to get enough points or opt for GUI maynooth or any other college. My parents tell me degree from trinity or ucd is more worth

Whether or not to repeat? Well that depends on the candidate. Do you want to repeat.? One will struggle to apply themselves unless repeating i sreally what they want. Do you want this course enough to repeat for it? Is there room for improvement and can you recognise changes that need to be made?
These are only questions that you yourself know the answers to.

While the reputation of UCD and Trinity may be percieved to be better, NUIM is still a leading university which provides very well recognised degrees.
  • 16:29

Further to my question at 15.05 needing 2C3's at higher level but only getting 1 C3 yet exceeding points requirements, course required in in an IT is there any chance of being offered a place if course is not filled by 3rd round of

No. Points can vary but course requirements stay static.

    Sorry.

My daughter did get by the portfolio and interview stages on her preferred courses. So we did put them down on her final Cao list. She wants to do a plc portfolio course to try again next year so we will ignore the other courses she has been offered?

If she wants to do a PLC portfolio course and receives some CAO offers, then she can either ignore the offers and they will be gone or she may decide to defer one of her offers to keep it on hold for next year.
  • 16:35
If BA degree does not go down another 10 points and it's not likely to appear on the vacant list if my son does a Liberal plc in rathmines what is his chances of getting into ucd next year with 330 points. Thanks

There are a very limited number of places on UCD Arts for people coming in with a PLC course so there is no guarantee of a place if he does the Liberal Arts PLC in Rathmines.  If there are 5 places available for PLC applicants and 10 apply for them then a mini points system happens based on the results in the FETAC course to decide who gets the 5 places.  So he is in with a chance but not guaranteed.
  • 16:36
I didn't get past the portfolio stage on my preferred course. Can I try again nx year using either leaving cert or fetac or both?

    Yes you can.
  • 16:41
My son got his 3rd choice but would prefer a course not on his CAO form. If he accepts his 3rd choice can he add a new course further up the list - does this course have to appear on vacant places to be added?

Yes and yes.  He can add a course from the vacant place list above the choice he has been offered and he will be considered for an offer of a place on this course in round two.  This is the only way he can add a course to his CAO application.
  • 16:41
I got 410 points and expected to get a place in film and screen media is it still possible to get it or do i have to look for other courses ?

Yes if this course lies above the course that you got offered today. You can continue to be in the running for higher preference courses in round 2.
  • 16:44
I got more points required for commerce in UCC... however I am a repeating A level student and CAO did not have my correct exam results & only got in contact on saturday and it was too late. Do I have a good chance at getting an offer on 2nd round?

I recommend that you contact CAO and make sure that all the details are correct. You need to get answers from them. I would only be speculating.

    Good luck.
  • 16:47
I have accepted my 2nd choice (NC003) and hope to get my first choice in round 2 (DC133 Multimedia). If I see another course I prefer in the Available places on CAO.ie how do I go about applying for it and how does it affect my accepted 2nd choice?

You apply for vacant places just like a change of mind.  You now have your NC003 accepted so that stays unless you are offered and accept a different course either your first choice or through the vacant places.  If you want to remain in the running for your first choice but also want to apply for a vacant place you could insert the vacant place just after your first choice.
  • 16:48
Hello my son got 565 and got pharmacy in ucc but had trinity ahead of ucc. Points in both are 565 however trinity is 565 random selection. Question is is there still a chance of getting trinity in round two offers?

Yes there is still a chance. It will depend on whether all candidates take up their offer in TCD. If not then more people in the random sample pool will be offered places.

    The best of luck.
  • 16:56
Hi are you able to accept the course you got offered and defer it for next year, but also reapply to the cao with different options and maybe pick one of them next year instead of the differed course??

You should be able to defer but you must contact the HEI in question and put it in writing. Your place will be kept for you on 2013 points. You must put this at the top of your CAO application otherwise you lose your deferred place and are back competing in 2014 pool.
  • 16:59
Hi, children's & Gen nursing points went down in UCD to 500. Which Is exactly what i got. I didn't get offered it as random selection. Are there usually people who don't take their place? Last year the course was 515 but people got in on 490. Ta

Yes, usual for one reason or other. How many defer is not exactly known so I cant promise you that you or all the other who failed entry due to random selection will now face offers on August 28th.

    I hope you get in.
  • 17:05

My daughter got 485 points her first choice was Physical Education and Biology in DCU which is 490 points . Is there any possibility she could be offered a place on 2nd round?

Yes it is possible but nobody will know until August 28th.

  • 17:07
Will a engineering degree from NUIM be preceived as more valuable that from UCD or trinity in the local job market? this is critical for me to decide should i take up NUIM or repeat LC. please advice...

I recommend that you move forward and take NUIM. NUIM is a very well recognised university offering excellent degree programmes.

  • 17:08

I done my LCE in 2012 but I failed maths cause I only done p2 but honoured the rest, I went on to do a fetec level 5 in mechanical engineering which I got a distinction so I applied to CAO collages this year to continue the same but got refused. Help

Did you repeat the LC maths while doing the PLC course.  This may be an issue where there may be a requirement for a pass in a certain maths module or indeed a requirement to have a pass in LC maths.  I would contact the admissions office of the cao colleges you applied to, to see what the problem was so you can go about remedying the situation.

Got405points;wanted UCD Social scienceDN550;its410.DEVESTATED as missed 5th year DUE to severe illness And worked so hard to catch up.will It drop in 2nd round.offered course don't want;if I accept will I b offered higher course?if I reject is it the

Whether it will drop or not will be known on August 28th. In order for it to drop we need successful candidates to reject their offer and make room for people like you.

If you accept your lower choice you can still be in with a chance of getting higher offers in round 2.

Were you eligible for DARE due to your illness. This could help you with points reduction.
  • 17:34
If i take a year out, can i just say no to what im offered now, then apply again next year using the same points, thanks

Yes you can. You could also try to defer your place guaranteeing yourself a place for next year. You can do this by contacting the HEI directly in writing.
  • 17:38
Hi :) Do you know if it's possible to defer medicine in NUIG for a year? Also, I missed medicine in UCC by random selection, is there a good chance of getting a second round offer?
You must write or email NUIG in order to seek a deferral. The chance of you getting into UCC will depend on the actions of successful candidates. How many will reject there place and therefore, create an opportunity for those in the random sample pool. Will enough people reject first round offers to let everyone from the ransom sample pool in or will 3/4 places be mad eavailable? Time will tell and nobody will know the answer to this until August 28th.

We wish you teh best of luck.
  • 17:41
Hi I only got 275 in my leaving what courses are there out there for me or should i repeat

First of all, there are many courses out there for you. You will mainly be looking at level 6 and 7 courses (noramlly offered by IT's ) or apply to independent colleges. You could also look at doing PLC. PLC courses can be used as a progression route into thirs level education.

Whether you should repeat or not will depend on many things such as - do you want to repeat? How can you change your study plans, is there room for improvement.. Omly you can answer these questions.
  • 17:46
I have 450 points and am looking for an engineering stream.  DCU was unfortunately below the course choice i put. Can i expect vacant places in round 2 for applying. Do i have a chance with my marks

I have seen Engineering courses in the vacant places list in the past so keep an eye on this list every day over the next week or two.  Remember the vacant place list is updated on a regular basis with new courses so keep a regular eye on it.  With 450 points you should stand a good chance of getting an offer if the right courses appear on the list.
  • 17:47
Hi got 360 points short 25 for arts in St. pats did not apply to Maynooth as I did not have a language would there be any point in calling admissions office to see would they offer me a place got 5th choice but not happy with it should I accept

No. In order to get into Maynooth you must have it on your CAO application as well as satisfying the minimum requirements.
You should study a course that you are interested in. If tyou like teh subjects you will find it easier to study and hence do well. You can now no longer receive any of your choices below your offer today. You can however receive an offer above todays offer.

    Good luck.
  • 17:48
got 455 but lost unlucky as my choice integrated eng with management got cut of with 455 on asterisk. should i keep fingers crossed for round 2 for same placement

Of course. You got very close. Please read mail below regarding what happens when you miss out on random selection. The asterisk stands for random selection.
  • 17:49
Is it possible to accept an offer this year and then apply again to CAO next year using the same point LC point

Yes your LC points are yours to keep so you can apply to CAO again next year using this years points if you wish.
  • 17:49
didnt get enough points for he course i wanted to do so i was offered any level 8 choices im wondering if i apply for vacant places could i still get an offer in round 2
Yes, if you apply for vacant places you could still get an offer in round 2.
  • 17:50
My little brother got 290 pointsand got offered a level 8 course in sligo and a level 7 in galway but he wanted arts in Gway which is 300 which was his 1st choice. If he accepts sligo will he still be eligible for second round offers for 1st choice?
    Yes he will.
  • 17:51
I didn't get the course i wanted, the course is heavily audition based, can i keep my leaving cert points from this year and apply for next year's audition? thank you

Yes you can. Your points are yours to use whenever you want.  You can reapply for the course again and redo the audiition and try to improve your score.
  • 17:51
Hi. I am short 5 points for BIS in UCC . Do you think I will get an offer in round 2? It has gone up from 410 to 440 this year.

I think that it isquite possible but nobody will know for sure until August 28th.
  • 17:54
hi, im just wondering how many vacancies can yu apply for and do yu still have to meet the requirements and if yu were eligible for hear would that help yu get into a vacant course with reduced points

Applying for vacant places is like doing a change of mind.  You insert the vacant places onto your CAO lists so theoretically you could apply for a good number of courses.  You must meet the entry requirements for the vacant place courses you are applying to.  Yes, if you are a HEAR candidate this may help with your application if the courses are in a college in the HEAR system.
  • 17:58
I've gotten 5 points off the min entry of my 2nd choice, and the number of places in the course is 20. Might I still be able to get this course in the second round offers despite this? Or might the number of places be extended?

Second round places are generally offered where people who have been offered places in round one decline the places and then these places are offered to the next applicants most entitled to a place.  Being 5 points off is the best position you can be in if they are going to make 2nd round offers, so you are in witha good chance.
  • 17:59
The points for physiotherapy in RCSI (530) does not have an asterix beside it. Does this mean that random selection did not occur and is there a chance the points may decrease in the second round of offers
Random sample did not occur so. There is always a chance that points may decrease but we will have to wait until August 28th to find out for definite.

    Best of luck.
  • 18:00

hi further to my question before given a choice between DCU and NUIM in the engineering stream whom should i keep a lookout for in the vacant stream. Which has got more market value

It is very hard to say as people will have different opinions. It really depends on the person. It is a personal choice. Both are excellent universities offering high standard degrees.

  • 09:15
My nehew had the points for mechanical engineerig in ul. Had not got the honours maths . If he does the engineering math exam will he get offered a place

Yes the exam in UL is a second chance exam for those who failed to get the required grade in the LC.  UL are advising applicants to accept what they got in round one and then sit the exam. if they are sucessful in the exam they will be offered a place in round two.  Full details and FAQs on the UL website.

My son is delighted as he got a place in DIT. Is the registration fee €2500 and do you have to pay it in one lump sum or can you pay in installments? Thanks

Many colleges allow the payment of the registration fee over 2 installments, so I would be surprised if DIT were any different.  Contact DIT fees office and they will give you details of payments.
  • 09:53
hello! i got 340 on my CAO. 5 of my courses were cancelled out since they didn't match my requirements. i would like to try computer applications in DCU which is 400...but the website says students need a minimum point of 300 and higher?

Not sure what the question is here.  300 is the minimum points anyone would need to be even considered for a place in Computer Applications.  DCU is one of the only colleges to set a minimum points score for a course.  However with normal market conditions demand has increased this score to 400 points.  You would not be entitled to a place on this course as you only have 340 points.
  • 10:15
do you have to accept a round 1 offer when you don't want it in order to be elig[...]ible for round 2 offers

No. You can still be offerd courses that were of a higher preference than the one that you were offered yesterday whether you accept or decline that offer. The only way that you will receive additional offers in round 2 is if the points for your higher preference courses go down and you now have the adequate points requirement.

    Good luck.

This is not a Journalism course.  It is a BA in 2 subjects with Journalism added in a as a small specialism.  If at the end of 1st year you really don't want to do any more journalism you can switch to the normal BA omnibus and continue with 2 normal subjects.  But you should go in with an open mind:  you never know you might love the combination of journalism with legal studies.

I did a FETAC course in Applied Social Care but only got 5 distinctions so did not get an offer. I still want to get into a Social Science or Childcare course but don't know where to go from here.

Keep an eye on vacant places on www.cao.ie.

You could apply as a mature student. You have to be 23 years of age. I would also advise you to contact the college where you studied the course. They should have experienced this before.
  • 10:44
if i accept an offer in the first round, will i be offered a course in the second round
    Please refer to mails below.

Wondering what the alternative positions are for accessing PE teaching with chem/geog as I didn't get the points required. Am I best to repeat or do a plc. If plc is best option should I look at sport or sciences?

There are 3 PE teaching courses at undergraduate level, UL, DCU and UCC.  I don't think these courses have FETAC links and so I'm not sure if doing a PLC is going to be a great help to you.  If you realy want to get into one of these courses repeating for the points might be the best way to go.  Remember you can also do PE teaching in the UK so an application to UCAS this year might be advisable also.
  • 10:47
Hi just wondering if you get offered number 3 and you want number 7 what happens

You will only get offers on courses above your third choice not below it. Hence, you will not get offered your seventh choice in this years offers.

You could reapply next year and position your courses differently.
  • 10:53
is level 8 business level 7 with one extra year?

It may or may not be. I would advise you to look and the course content of both and compare. Usually once one completes  level 7 (providing that they meet a certain criteria)they can carry on  into a level 8 add on.
  • 10:55
I have not got any offers as my leaving cert results plummeted and I wasn't expecting it! I have plenty of points for arts and would like to do it in ucd however I never put it on my CAO is it likely that a place in arts will become vacant ?

It is highly unlikely but I would still be checking on a daily basis.
  • 10:59
Has culinary arts in DIT ever came on vacent places in recent years?

I don't have access to this information. Keep an eye on www.cao.ie vacant places on a daily basis. DIT may be able to help you with this.
  • 10:59
what is the round 2 offers that are available today ? please explain

Round two offers will be available in applicants homes on the 29th August.  These are basically where people who have been offered places in round one have not accepted these places and the places are now being offered to the next people down the course merit lists usually on lower points.

  • 11:02
Portfolio and points based courses eg sports and GAA in Carlow, if unsuccessfull is it reasonable to seek feedback as to why one was unsuccessfull?

I would advise you to contact the admissions office in Carlow. Carlow IT 059 917500.

Hi if you accept an offer and then on recheck your points go up will you be offered something then again and have all your choices become irrelevant as you have accepted something? thanks

If you scroll back through some other questions/answers below we have answered questions about rechecks and subsequent offers, you might have a look over them.  Basically if you get an extra 10 points from your rechecks in October then these extra points are backdated to yesterday, round one offers day and whatever you would have been offered yesterday with the extra points must be offered to you in October.  In this regard you don't have to worry about your other choices.  Proceed as if you are not going to get any upgrades and if you do it's a pleasant bonus.
  • 11:06
I didn't get enough points in the Hpat to do so and I'll be repeating it this year In the meantime I'll be doing a science based course. If I accept this offer will it be possible to transfer from my current course to medicine next year?

From now on the HPAT is only valid for you year. This means that it will not be possible to present results achieved in the 2013 sitting of the HPAT-Ireland test for admission to undergraduate medical courses in 2014.

It is not possible to transfer from a science based course to medicine after year one.
  • 11:08
got an underwhelming 330 points. would it be reasonable to hold out for arts in ucd which has dropped to 340? will the drop make it more or less likely for me to get in?

Unlikely that this popular course will drop. Nobody will know for definite till round 2 on the 29th August.
  • 11:08
in the cao available places do these offers depend only on the points you get or would they look at the minimum entry requirements?

You must meet the minimum entry requirements for any course you apply for.  Then depending how many people apply for the vacant place, a mini points competition may form for the vacant places available.
  • 11:10
i failed maths got an e in ordainry level but the courses of engineering that i wanted to go on were really low points but the entry requriments were od3 in maths if them place dont fill up will i still have a chance of getting a place in any course?

I am afraid not. Points may vary but entry requirements tend to stay static. Check to see if this college offers the special maths exam for those who did not meet the specific maths entry requirement.

    Best of luck.
  • 11:10
for teaching or await rechecks and hope to gain points to get her course and if so will pats have a place vacant in oct when rechecks are decided

Could you resend question, some of it got cut off.
  • 11:16

I'm 15 points off my course law plus in UL if I gain the points from re checks wil I be offered the course this year ? In October ?
If you get the necessary points then you will get an offer.

  • 11:25
If i start a course the course i have been offered but dont like it. Will the gov pay the fees for a different course next year

Providing that you leave your course before October 31st 2013.
  • 11:29
What does the asterisk beside a course mean ?

It means that random sampling has been used. E.g. If only 3 places remain out a possible 200 places on a course, and the 198th to the 202nd eligible applicants all have the same points, only 3 out of these 5 applicants can be awarded a place. When applying to college courses through the CAO, each applicant is allocated a random number for each course. This number is totally random – similar to a lottery number, and bears no relation to any other factors including CAO number, date of application, or order of course choice.

The applicant with the highest random number is allocated the first of the three remaining places and likewise for the two remaining places. The three eligible course applicants with the three highest random numbers are allocated the three remaining places.

You can read the full expalnation on www.cao.ie

  • 11:29
Hi I am eligible for the DARE,is it possible to be offered a place on the second round ?

Yes it should be.  I would imagine that each of your course choices that are part of the DARE scheme should have been scored with your extra points for the DARE scheme and if you become elligible for a place on a course in the normal way then in round two you would be offered it.  If you wnat to be a hundred per cent sure then contact the admissions offce of the courses in question.
  • 11:32
I got an offer at GMIT, which i will accept, but i will be appealing in order to try and get a course in DCU! So i was wondering,if my appeal goes successfully, will I be able to transfer from galway to dublin? and would i have to pay the fees again?

Have a look at some of the recent questions/answers below where we have addressed this issue.  On the fees front, if you move college in October you will not have to pay the registration fee again, it will be transferred from one college to the other new college you have moved to.
  • 11:33
Got dn500 UCC as my 5 th choice next choice up is 430 international arts Ucc. have 400 points really want this what chances grtting on 2nd round as this is a brand new course can I put in alpplication of transfer after I register.

DN 500 is Arts in UCD.

You would have to check with the college to see if they offer this transfer service. It is unlikely that you would be abl to transfer into a course without having the necessary points for that course.

It is unlikely that DN500 will drop. Nobody will know for definite until round 2 offers come out on August 29th.
  • 11:38
Hi, do you know what points were needed for course TR198, Geography & Economics in Trinity?

    495. Not all applicants were offered places. Random selection was used.
  • 12:00
If you do not take up an offer as you got a place in England, What happens if you don't like England and want to come back here next year. Can you reapply next year and are you entiltled to free fees. Or should you defer this year.

The two systems are completely separate.  After the year if you don't like England you can come back to study here.  During the year in England you fill out a new CAO application the same as this year and then you will get offers as per this year in August.  You would be entitled to free fees as you have not used up government fees here in Ireland.  If you have been offered a course this year that you would be very happy to take up next year if needed then yes maybe you should consider defering, but remember to take up that place next year you must apply through the CAO next year and put only that course down on the application.  If you put down anything else you lose your defered place.
  • 12:03
Hi, I didn't get into my level 7 engineering course in DIT. The points were 360 and I got 330. Is there any chance that I may be offered a place at all?

It is unlikely the points will drop from 360 to 330 so it's not looking good for general engineering.  Have you any other level 6/7s in your choices that you might get an offer for.
  • 12:04
why has computer science in UCC increased 90 points

The demand for this course has increased and the candidates obviously had points around the cut off points.
  • 12:06

My niece had her heart set on studying medicine at TCD and only put this course on her CAO application. Unfortunately, she did not get enough points. Is it possible to add a course if one becomes available on the vacant places list?

Yes. Keep an eye on www.cao.ie on a daily basis.
  • 12:07
If you got the points but not the requirements could you be offered the course on round 2 ?

No. Points can vary but course requirements do not change.
  • 12:08
Hi i got 505 points in the leaving my first choice is speech and language therapy cork which has gone down to 510. iv already accepted biopharmaceutical chemistry in galway is there any chance of getting in the second round of offers?

There is a chance albeit it very slim because the points are 510*.  The star means that not everyone on 510 has been offered a place on the course as random selection was used.  The problem is that we don't know how many people on 510 are still in the random pool awaiting the possibility of an offer.  These must be cleared before they move down to people on 505 points.  I think your best bet is to proceed as if it is not going to happen and the if it does happy days.
  • 12:09
Hi I've been offered mechanical eng 175 pts which I don't want,I really wanted civil eng and met the exam requirements in both dit and dlk I can't understand why I wasn't offered it and will I get it on second offer

If civil eng courses are below your mechanical eng then you will not get offer for these course. Once you get an offer you ca only get offers above that choice and not below it.

    Could that be the problem.
  • 12:11
Hi, I accepted my CAO offer, just wondering when I should be expecting to be contacted by the University? Is everyone contacted at the same time? Thanks

It varies from University to Unviresity. It can be anything from 3 or 4 days afterwards.
  • 12:11
My daughter was offered her 2nd choice. Can she defer this offer and reapply to cao for 1st choice again next year. Thank you

No.  If she defers 2nd choice she must only put this down on the CAO form next year to take up the defered place.  If she puts another course down she loses the defered place.
  • 12:13
Is it likely for some courses to drop their points from 30 when the round 3's come out?

It all depends on the of people that reject their first offer. Obviosly this will vary from course to course. So it is impossible to say. Round 2 out on August 29th.

    Best of luck.
  • 12:15
Thank you for your reply 15.59 and apologies if my query was not very clear. My son has to defer his offer, but in so doing, is he out of the system! Can he still be offered his 1st choice in 2nd round and then defer that instead? Tks again

He will still be in the system regardless of deferring yesterdays offer. He can still be offered his first choice in round 2.

    Good luck.
  • 12:16
I want to consider taking a year out before going to college. How long do I have to make that decision ie can I accept my first offer and then retract my decision?

Your decision must be with CAO by 5.15pm on the 26th August.  If you accept your place and then have a change of heart you can contact the college and tell them you now don't wish to take up the place.  You can then reapply next year with a new application.
  • 12:18
Hi I'm eligible for dare and repeating next year but didn't know about dare this year, how many points under does dare let you in ?

This may vary from college to college but it is in the region of 60 pts.
  • 12:19
Is the course to become a primary school teacher in marino institute of education fee paying?

You will be liable for registration fee like everyone else. This is €2,500 p.a. and can generally be paid in instalements.

Is it possible to call into cao here in galway re a lower course. Something on news just now about this. She wanted med but got pharmacy, thought she would get biomedical science here in Galway and would have only that pharmacy points came down. 565
    You could try!!!
  • 12:22
Got offered my second choice. I need to defer this year. If I email HEI and ask to defer my place, can I still get an offer on my first choice? ie, if college accept this deferral does that rule me out of getting a better CAO offer on 29th August?

    This question is answered below.
  • 12:25
If l don't accept my offer in the first round do l still get an offer in the 2nd round!! and if l accept my 3rd choice will l only get offered either my 1st and 2nd offer in the 2nd round

Regardless of whether or not you accept an offer in round one you will still remain in the running for a higher preference course in the next rounds.  You're right you can only move up from the roound one offer and not down so if offered choice 3 in round one then you can only hope to be offered choice 1 or 2 in the next rounds.
  • 12:27
My son got 480. Got offered 3rd choice ga980. His first and second choice were both physical education . He would prefer his 4th choice . What should he do

I would recommend that you choose the course that you like the most. He could take a year out and reapply through the CAO. He would run the risk of points increasing though. He could look to see if his 4th choice offers a back door option via doing a PLC. Check out this link:

Hi my son got into business and law in dit but was really hoping for business and law in ucd is there any way for him to transfer into ucd, after year 1 or year 2?

Some colleges do offer this service and each college would have their own policy on this. I advise that you contact the colleges admission office.
  • 12:29
When are the vacant cao courses next updated??

The list of vacant places is updated on a regular basis.  Colleges can update the list on daily basis sometimes so it is worh having a look at it every day if you are serious about making a vacant place application.  The instructions about timings are clear in the information so read it carefully.
  • 12:30
My niece has received no offer this year. She wants Veterinary Nursing, deferred last year and has got FETAC level 5 (7 distinctions and 1 Merit) plus Leaving Cert 2012 (335 points). Will she be offered anything in round 2.

If she deferred her place on a Veterinary Nursing and placed this as her number one choice then she should have been offered it.
I would advise her to contact CAO immediately to ensure that they have her FETAC results.
  • 12:31
I got offered a course that I really don't want to do so I'm thinking of doing a plc and reapplying next year. If I get a grant for this year for a level 5, am I still entitled to one next year for a level 8?

My understanding is that you would reapply again next year and if things haven't changed you would be elligible again.  Contact SUSI to get a definitive answer to this.
  • 12:32

I would advise you to contact CAO.

Hi, i want to study zoology but did not recieve the points for sc in trinity or ucd. I accepted a place for general science in dit. If i did not put down science in nuig on the caothis year, can i transfer into it next year if i meet their criteria?

Transfers are a very difficult thing to make general statements about as they are usually treated on a case by case basis and depend on a number of issues before a decision can be made.  I would advise calling the admissions offices involved for further information.
  • 12:37
Hi, I got 360 points in my Leaving cert this year and my corse is 370 so i didn't get offered it in round 1. Could I still get offered it in round 2 even though I am 10 points off?

We have already answered this, please read similar questions / answers below.

I didnt get enough points for social science this year and want to apply again next year. I'm thinking about doing a plc course this year to help with my entry next year. What advice would you give me and what would be the best course

PLC courses can be used as a progression route into third level. Competition is high and the quota for FETAC applicants into third level courses can be limited. My advice for you would be to some research. Check out the following link:

    http://www.careersportal.ie/members/auth/courses/plc_search.php
  • 13:07
Son just finished a year in a UK university, applied through CAO this year got a[...] place in first year here in Dublin, are we liable for fees or do we still qualify for free Irish fees?

You still qualify for free Irish fees.

  • 13:15
I want to apply to a course that's not on my original level 8 list. It's on the list of available/vacant list either. Is there any way I can do that? Who can I contact

If it is on the vacant listen then you can apply for that course. I think that you meant to say that the course is not on vacant places?
Keep an eye on the vacant list as this can change on a daily basis. You will have to reapply through CAO next year if this course does not appear under vacant places.
  • 13:20
Do u think pharmaceutical healthcare is big demand this year? 10pts short

The points requirement will tell you that. If candidates reject their place in the first round then places become available. This may cause points to fall as those next in line may have lower points.
  • 13:25
Hi there! i got my letter yesterday from CAO saying none of my courses were chosen Most of my courses had an asterisk(*) beside them...the rest didn't. Does that mean that i might have a chance at getting a place?
Yes if places become available or if points drop then you could be in with a chance of getting a place. The asterisk means that selection was chosen at random e.g.

If more places come available then the other two apllicants now get in.

    Good luck.

  • 13:27
Hi. I have accepted my 2nd choice and am happy to take this course but I am 15 points off my first choice. If I get offered my 1st choice on the 2nd Round offers do I have to take it? or can I stick with my 2nd choice which I have accepted.

Well done. No, the choice is yours. You have to option of stay put or moving over to your new offer. It decision is up to you.
  • 13:31
I got offered my third choice in DCU which was 410 points but I really want my number 4 choice which is 370 points in DIT, should I not accept my offer and wait to apply next year or what do you think?

The only way you could get into your 4th choice course is if this course appeared under vacant places. So keep an eye out on www.cao.ie on a daily basis.

Choose a course that you are interested in. The more you like the subjects the easier it will be to study. More study should lead to higher grades!

It is hard for me to say what to do. I can give you the information but ultimately the choice is yours. If you wait and reapply you can change your order of preference but nobody can guarantee that the points for this course won't rise next year.

Think about it. We are here if you have more questions.
  • 13:34
Why points increase ? or decrease or stays the same? what are the reasons ?

It all depends on the supply ( the number of places available on the course) and demand ( the number of applicants who want the course)

e.g. a course has 5 places - supply. Demand is 15. The first 5 students get 500 each. The sixth student gets 490. The points in round 1 for this course will be 500.
  • 13:36
last year the course that i want increased by 45 pts this year by 20 pts .why is that? Im short 5 pts ? is there a big chance to get in second round ?

The students demanding this course have high points. Read the mail below. Nobody knows what way the points will go in round 2. Whether your course goes down or not will depend on how many successful applicants reject their places on this course and then making new places become available.

    Good luck.
  • 13:40
Is there no possible why I can be offered my 4th choice after I was offered my 3rd? I really don't want my 3rd and that means ill have to wait a year to apply again and I meet all the requirements for my 4th choice

See if the colleges offer a transfer service. Some offer a transfer service from one course to another with that college. This service tends to become available once you registrar but there is no certainty that it will be granted. Other colleges may offer transfers after year one. You are best to check with the colleges in question. Each HEI has their own policy.

    Good luck.
  • 13:46

Hi I received 360 points only got my 5th Choice my 3rd choice of Arts in St.Pats is what I really wanted Would there be any possibility of getting a place in Maynooth have the requirements but no language Thank you should I accept first offer even though I do not want it am having 2 subjects checked

In order to get offered Maynooth you need to have it down on your CAO application. Those who are exempt from a language needed to fill out an language exemption form along with proof of the exemption into NUI head office on a date prior to sitting your leaving cert.

If you accept your 5th offer you still keep yourself in the running for getting all offers  above your 5th one in the second round. My advise would be for you to do a course that you like. The more you like it the better you will be at it.

  • 13:47
I was offered my 2nd choice but I don't really want it I would prefer my 3rd choice will i accept it?

Please read email below. Unfortunately, it is not possible for you to get course choices below the course that you have been offered.
  • 13:54

I am getting one of my exam papers rechecked. If I accept the course offered to me today and if I get an upgrade later can I change to my first preference course. Or is it wiser to accept nothing until my paper is rechecked?

My advise would be for you to accept the course. You will be offered your first preference if you are granted an upgrade. Results of appeals come out mid October. You have the choive to stay put on the course that your in or move to your new course.

    Good luck.

  • 13:57

re your response 15.59.Many thanks and apologies that my query was a bit confusing regarding deferral! My son needs to defer the course that he was offered (DT501). In doing so, will he be out of the system for the 2nd round offers, as he would prefer to defer his 1st choice (TR002) if it is offered then; he got 440 points and this went up from 420 to 455! Thanks again.

No he will still be in with a chance of getting his first choice in round two regardless of what decicion he makes with his offered choice.

    Best of luck.

  • 13:59
what should i do if i get offered a course above the course I want in round 2? its within the same college ,the course that I must likely get

The decision is all yours. This puts you in a nice position as you can choose between staying on in your 2nd choice course or moving to your new offer.
  • 14:01
Hi I have been offered my 2nd choice of Childcare but my 1st choice is Pharmacy Technician . If I accept Childcare would it be possible to transfer to Pharmacy as they are both in same college ? And would this effect my grant if I get it ?

I imagine that you would need to have the required points for the Pharmacy Techician. Not all colleges offer a transfer service so I would advise you to phone the admissions office. It should not affect your grant but again I would let SUSI know if there is going to be a change in circumstances.
  • 14:08
My son did not get first choice ,Film and TV production in Dun Laoghaire , he was offered a course that is he is not very keen on doing so he is going to try to get onto a FETAC course that provides entry route to first choice course for next year.
How many FETAC places are available on this course ?
Is it actually very difficult to progress through this route because of limited places?
I have read the CAO handbook about the deferral process and it appears to say that if he defers the course that he has been offered this year he may only apply for that course next year. Is this correct?

FETAC courses can be used as a progression route and yes you are correct. The quota of places for FETAC applicants tends to be quite limited. You are therefore, completeing against other FETAC applicants for these limited places. However, sometimes FETAC applicants don't fill all these vacant places. I would advise you to speak directly to the college offering this course.

With regard to deferral, you have your facts right. If you defer you must place this course on the top of your new CAO applicant form otherwise you lose your deferral.

    Best of luck.
  • 14:12
Really need to know if cao offer can be revoked if it was offered and you don't have all the subject requirements for the course

I haven't applied for a course I can now qualify for based on my results from 2012 in Waterford .I.T. I am wondering do i have to apply now through the CAO or contact the college itself? Also, i am wondering if i can, for my second year, transfer from Waterford I.T to NUIM? The arts course i hope to apply for in Waterford is a level 8, the same level as the arts course in a university!.

I am not very clear on your first question.

All colleges differ in policy regarding transfers so I suggest that you contact the colleges in question.

If I accept my offer and I am offered nothing in round two do I have to still take the offer which I accepted?

No. I would let CAO know if you have had a change of mind though. This place could then be offered to someone else.

    Good luck.

If I accept my offer will I be only offered choices higher on the list in round 2?

Whether or not you accept or reject your exisiting offer you can only ever be offered higher course preferences to your offer.
  • 14:23
If I accept my first choice will I not be offered anything in round 2?

    Please read mail below.

Re 14:12 course is AS003 Maths is a required subject but I failed Maths but have received an offer. I'm afraid that I might get a call saying there has been a mistake!!

The NUI Institutions do have a compensation system where a HE will suffice if you have other combinations of grades.

NUI college have a rule where one higher E is acceptable for matriculation with either 3 Hc3 or one HB3 + 1HC3. This may have been put in place for you and hence you got an offer.

I suggest that if you want the exact details, you contact the NUI or email CAO with your number. Let me know the outcome and here to help if you have any further questions.

If I don't accept my offer to DCU and apply next year can I out dit first on my cao?

Yes. Your course choice and order of preference is your decision.
  • 14:43
Hi I have been offered a place in my 4th choice and I am thinking of deferring it for the year, I am still hoping that I may get offered my 2nd choice after my appeals, Im just wondering if I get offered my 2nd choice can I defer it too?
You can apply to defer it. It is up to the college whether they accept or reject your application for deferral.
  • 14:45

But if I accept my first choice will I then be offered choices lower on the list?

You can never be offered preferences that are lower down from the course you have been offered whether you accept or reject this offer.

  • 14:47
What does defer an offer mean?

If a young person is offered the course they really wanted and worked towards, the offer is a tangible educational commodity. They may wish to defer their place for any number of reasons i.e. postpone their commencement on this course till Sept 2014

I was offered my first choice if I accept this will I be offered anymore in round 2?

You don't get offered courses that are lower ranked than your first choice if you have received your first choice. So the answer is no.
  • 15:13
I have accepted a course but am considering getting two exams rechecked. If I go down a grade on these rechecks instead of up, I will no longer have the points for the course I have accepted. Would I lose my place on this course if this happened?

Very few students go down grades in rechecks. If this was to happen, CAO contact the relevant HEI. The HEI make the call on weither to allow you to stay on the course or not.

    Good luck.
  • 15:34
if i accept my first choice on level 7 will i be able to get a second round offer for a level 8 higher preferences than the one i have already received?

Yes you will still be in the running for a second round offer.
  • 15:36
what is the likely hood of second round offers for arts in NUIG

It really depends on how many if any of the successful applicants reject their offer for this course. If these numbers are substantial points will drop. Nobody will know the exact answer to this question till Monday.
  • 16:02
Does the cao vacant places list update all day everyday Thank you

    Yes is the answer.
  • 16:03
Hi, my first choice was arts in ucc points this year were 335. I met these points and all the subject requirements but only reason i wasnt offered the course was because i forgot to submit my leaving cert results for my cao. Can i still get it ?

I would advise you to contact CAO immediately.
  • 16:16
Is it possible to get a chance of an offer for a course in the 7th choice position if no previous offer was received in the first round ?

Yes it is possible but only if points fall. Whether you get your seventh offer or not will depend on your order of preference and the points for these courses.
  • 16:20

Hi I have qualified for the date scheme back in June and was hoping It would help me get my arts in UCD which this year went down to 340 , I got 295 do you think with second round or 3rd round offers I could get it or would the dare help me

The DARE should give you a point reduction. Each course has a quota for DARE applicants. You may have missed out on a place as other DARE applicants had higher points. It is possible for you to get offered it on round 2 but other applicants need to reject their places for this to happen.

I would advise you to make contact with DARE. Check out www.accesscollege.ie
    Good luck.

  • 16:28
how do you apply for a vacant course?

Go to www.cao.ie. Click on apply and the information is all there for you.

    Good luck.
  • 16:37
was there second round offers for arts in NUIG last year?

What happened last year does not mean that it will happen again this year. The answer is no though. The points stayed the same.
  • 17:09
i've accepted an offer in ucd. my question is can i go for the course i've accepted in ucd and at the same time apply again for cao and sit the 2014 leaving cert externally without going to school to increase my points?

Yes you can repeat externally without going to school.
  • 17:10
Was there second round offers for arts in UCD last year ?

Yes, and points fell by 5 .
  • 17:10
How many rounds was there for ucd arts last year?

    two.
  • 17:12
I know that it's different all the time and your answer may be wrong but I was wondering your thoughts on what round 2 offers would be like on a course that normally ranges between 370-390 that was 375 last year and rose to 410 this year.

Yes it is likely that this course could go down but it really just depends on how many successful applicants reject their offer. Nobody will know this until August 29th.

    Good luck.
  • 17:48
Hi, I got 405 points and this year business and management shot up to 415 in dit, is it likely that points will reduce in the second round and furthermore a 10 point drop? Thank you

Yes points could fall. It is possible but unfortunately, one won't know until August 29th.
  • 17:50
I have received an offer my first preference in level 7, but I am hoping that my second preference in level 8 (Arts in UCD) will go down by just 5 points in the second round (I got 335). If I accept my level 7 now, can I still get an offer for Arts?

Yes. Accepting your level 7 will have no affect on your level 8 offers.
  • 17:52
If I get an offer after appeals will it be too late to start a general science course? Would I have missed to much?

It would eb up to you.

However applicants are also advised that special provision cannot be made for assessments if they have missed the start of term.

hi , my daughter is 10 points short of her 1st choice course in IADT .She has received offer for other course in this same college and has accepted ? does the second round offer allow her the same opportunity/chance to receive her 1st preference

Yes. Regardless of accepting an offer she will still be in the running to receive her first choice in round 2.

    Good luck.
  • 18:05
My daughter got ul science with concurrent teacher education with chemistry but wanted ucd as science If she does a year in ul with this course can she transfer to ucd to do ag science

Unlikely. I know that UCD offer transfer request for their Ag Science course from other colleges but that course in UL is not one. WIT offers a transfer system into Ag Science or certain modules on this course. They were in talks about setting up a link with Tralee IT also. Could these be on your level 7's
