  • Hello and Welcome . . .  It's Grand National day at Aintree, the sun is out and even Conor McGregor is in the house for the world's greatest steeplechase.

Will we have an Irish winner? Cause of Causes is among three Gordon Elliott runners, while Willie Mullins' hopes lie with Pleasant Company. Let's see.

The main event on the third and final day of the festival is at 5.15pm, and we will have all the build up and live updates right here!

  • Story so far . . .

It's been a busy week already in Liverpool.

On Thursday, Lizzie Kelly celebrated a huge success as Tea For Two saw off the gallant Cue Card in the Betway Bowl. While Defi Du Seuil claimed his third top-level success after completing a Cheltenham Festival and Aintree double in grinding out victory in the Doom Bar Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle.

Then yesterday, Cheltenham  Gold Cup winning rider Robbie Power began his new job as retained rider to owners Ann and Alan Potts in the best possible style with a Grade One double.

The Colin Tizzard trained pair Fox Norton and Pingshou got the new arrangement off to a perfect start with wins in the Melling Chase and the Top Novices Hurdle. Tizzard then completed a 4,334/1 big race hat-trick with Ultragold’s shock 50-1 victory in the Topham Chase over the big National fences.

40 horses there - take your pick!

  • Betting:

Definitely Red is the favourite at the moment (10-1)

Ahead of Blaklion  and Pleasant Company both at 12-1.

Vieux Lion Rouge is at 14-1, with More of That, Cause of Causes and One for Arthur all 16-1

  • Blakion is now the joint favourite with Definitely Red (10-1)
  • "Luck is vital in the Grand National but few jockeys have ever had more of a knack for ensuring their own big-race good fortune than Ruby Walsh who can make it a ‘Lucky 13th’ Aintree spin on Pleasant Company."

  • My money is on Cause of Causes - a winner at the last three Cheltenham festivals. And particularly impressive in Cross-Country  Chase victory last month. One of eleven Irish trained horses in the field. It'd be great to have an Irish winner!

Brian's 1,2,3,4 though is;  1:  Pleasant Company.  2:  Saint Are.  3:  Saphir Du Rheu.  4:  Tenor Nivernais.

  • Five minutes to go. English national anthem being played, we're almost there. Excitement building. What a beautiful day in Aintree, sun shining with 70,000 spectators about to watch the  world's greatest steeplechase!
  • 27 Lord Windermere delaying the parade, doesn't want to come out. Favourites remain the same, Blaklion and Definitely Red both 10-1
  • Blaklion moves ahead of Definitely Red as 9-1 favourite - as we have a false start.

So we'll have a standing start for the 2017 Aintree Grand National

  • Another false start!
  • And we are off - third time of asking!!
  • Vicente down at fence number one! Young Master is also gone
  • 10-1 Definitely Red pulled up! Fence 11 of 30
  • Saphir Du Rheu also gone. . .
  • Rogue Angel leads at the 13th fence on the inside
  • Measureofmydreams falls as Rogue Angel still leads at The Chair, 15th . . .
  • 22 of 30 fences gone as Ucello Conti falls. Rogue Angel on the inside still leads
  • Roi Des Francs powers to the front. Cause of Causes creeping into contention. Three to jump
  • Favourite Blaklion takes the lead by about three lengths . Two to jump
  • Last fence. Blaklion, Cause of Causes, One for Arthur going for it
  • One for Arthur has it!!
  • 1. One For Arthur 14-1

    2. Causes for Causes

    3. Saint Are

    4. Blaklion F

  • Only the second Scottish-trained winner of the Grand National. Coming from the back. A great win for Lucinda Russell and Derek Fox
  • Racecourse confirms that all 40 horses are back safe and sound!
  • Winning jockey Derek Fox, from Ireland; "He just jumped so well and never missed a fence. He was unbelievable and took me everywhere. . . He just jumped so well, even though he was a long way back!"
  • So that's that. One For Arthur (14-1) wins the 2017 Aintree Grand National, and Derek Fox from Sligo is the winning jockey. Favourite Blaklion finishes fourth, with the well fancied Definitely Red being pulled up.

An entertaining race, and all 40 horses and jockeys back safely. Great news! Thanks for joining us, report and reaction to follow.

Attention turns to Augusta now though!
