    Good afternoon!

Welcome to our coverage of England's last-eight clash with Sweden in Samara (kick-off 3.0).

The World Cup is now a strictly European affair, after Belguium's golden generation came of age last night and sent Neymar's Brazil home, kicking and screaming.

Today Gareth Southgate's side have the opportunity to join them in the last four - and become just the third English side ever to reach the semi-finals.

And having already made history by winning their first World Cup penalty shootout against Colombia in the last-16, there's a sense that England now really do believe.

Across the water the sun is shining and the beer gardens are packed - for anyone aged 30 and under this tournament is already their Italia '90.

But for the World Cup to be considered a major success from an English perspective they have one more hurdle to negotiate, in the form of the Swedes.

It is ironic Sweden's best performance since 1994 has come after the departure of arguably their greatest ever player - but Zlatan Ibrahimovic's retirement seems to have a unifying effect.

Janne Andersson's side are devoid of any real superstars - but they are a proper team. Well drilled, well organised and - like England - on the cusp of history.

We will be bringing you all of the action from Samara this afternoon, before hosts Russia take on Croatia tonight.

    Come on!!!

England: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Alli, Henderson, Lingard, Young; Sterling, Kane. Subs: Butland, Rose, Dier, Vardy, Welbeck, Cahill, Jones, Delph, Rashford, Loftus-Cheek, Alexander-Arnold, Pope.

One team will be playing a traditional 4-4-2 this afternoon - and it ain't England. Sweden have stuck with their 'flat pack four' and have made a single change - Emil Krafth replacing the suspended Mikael Lustig.

Southgate has named an unchanged side. It's slightly surprising given the majority of them limped through 120 minutes on Tuesday night - but there's also a lot to be said for picking what you think is your best XI.

    Some pre-match reading?

Ken Early has vented his spleen at the English hacks and supporters as 'Three Lions' fever takes hold. You can read that HERE.

Meanwhile Keith Duggan has written about Ireland's dark obsession with the England national team. You can read that HERE.

    20 mins until kick-off!
  • 14:48

Sweden's campaign has been bult on defensive solidity - they've kept three clean sheets in four games, only conceding against Germany. Manchester United centre-half Victor Lindelof has been particularly impressive after a disappointing first season at Old Trafford.

However, they do lack a punch up front. Strikers Marcus Berg and Ola Toivonen missed a comical amount of chances in their haphazard win over Switzerland - they will need to be clinical today.

Here come the teams in Samara!

Anthems done. We're moments away from kick-off. England in red, Sweden in yellow.

The ref is Bjorn Kuipers from the Netherlands.

  • 15:01
1 min: A steady start - England's back three knocking the ball around. Sweden sitting in.
  • 15:03
3 min: Pickford has a goal kick and Sweden are pushing right up, looking to put pressure on the English back three.
  • 15:05
4 min: The blueprint for this one has been set fairly early - Sweden sitting in with two banks of four, England keeping the ball nicely but a long way from the Swedish goal.
  • 15:06
5 min: Sterling is dropping deep the the ball and gets manhandled in midfield - Henderson wastes the quick free-kick.
  • 15:07
6 min: Alli does brilliantly to win the ball off Krafth and looks to slide in Kane but his pass is poor - that was an opening.
  • 15:09
7 min: A deep free-kick from Larsson towards Toivonen at the back post is overcooked - there's then a Swedish handball from the resulting throw-in. Sweden's main threat will come from set-pieces.
  • 15:09
9 min: England guilty of a few misplaced passes - this one yet to catch fire.
  • 15:10
  • 15:11
11 min: Sterling scampers after a Kane ball over the top and shows great strength to force Granqvist into a rushed clearance. England probing in the final third - great ball from Lingard to Walker on the right but he dithers over the cross and then puts it too close to Olsen in the Swedish goal.
  • 15:13
12 min: Claesson has time and space and sends a venomous effort comfortably over Pickford's goal - the England 'keeper is less than pleased with his back three.
  • 15:14
13 min: England starting to tick a little bit now and retain the ball higher up the pitch. A soft foul from Maguire on the edge relieves pressure for Sweden.
  • 15:17
16 min: It's roasting in Samara and the pace of the game reflects it. Very scrappy.
  • 15:18
17 min: Searching ball from Krafth down the right for Toivonen to chase - Stones does well to shepherd the ball out.
  • 15:20
19 min: First opening for England. They break through Sterling and Sweden struggle to get back and set. It ricochets into the path of Kane who tries to catch the 'keeper out with a low shot into the far corner but drags it wide.
  • 15:20
  • 15:21
21 min: That was better from Sterling, who's been dropping deep rather than playing on the shoulder. This game would be perfect for the pace of Marcus Rashford.
  • 15:24

22 min: Better from England, Kane turning smartly and finding Trippier on the right. He looks for Lingard but again Sterling drops deep and then loses it.

Moments later Lingard finds Trippier on the overlap - his low cross is smothered by Olsen with Kane lurking.

  • 15:26
25 min: Alli loses the ball and England then get lucky with an offside decision in halfway. Moments later Alli gives it away again - he's looked half-fit in every game this tournament, none of his usual spark.
  • 15:30

29 min: Slightly better from Sterling, picking it up between the lines and finding Young on the left. His low cross is turned away in the six-yard box.

Trippier has been England's best outlet and Alli finds him on the right - his cross is turned behind for an England corner.

  • 15:31

  • 15:32

Good corner from the left - Maguire rises above Forsberg and sends a booming header into the bottom left corner. Emphatic.

  • 15:36

35 min: Stunning ball from Pickford out to Trippier on the right - his first time cross is excellently headed clear by Granqvist with Sterling lurking.

Sweden have offered little thus far but were defending resolutely - it was likely to take somehting like that to break them down.

  • 15:36
36 min: Sweden have a very deep free-kick on the left - it's comfortably headed clear at the back post.
  • 15:37
  • 15:38
38 min: Sweden work the ball out to new right back Krafth on the right - but his cross is far too deep.
  • 15:38
Liam O’Grady Can you dispense with the fairly one-sided commentary please and let us get an idea about what BOTH teams are doing?
  • 15:39
Thanks for your comment Liam - but as it stands Sweden aren't doing an awful lot. They're mainly looking to sit in and spoil - but that England goal means they will have to come out of their shells at some point.
  • 15:40
  • 15:41
41 min: England win the ball back in midfield and Alli plays it to Sterling on the left. He looks to run at his man and get to the byline - his low cross is smartly cleared away.
  • 15:43
42 min: A rare touch for Forsberg on the left - he's been very isoated so far. He works it well with Larsson and whips one into the English box, but Pickford shouts loud and clear and the ball scoots through to him.
  • 15:45
43 min: A fine raking ball from Trippier in to Sterling - Lindelof snuffs him out well. And then moments later Sterling is played through on goal - he looks a mile offside and time seems to stand still but there's no flag. Stelring misses the one on one - and then then the flag is raised.
  • 15:46
45 min: Sterling misses a golden chance. Henderson plays a lovely ball over the top and his first touch is good. He looks to round the 'keeper but Olsen gets a big hand on it. Sterling should then lay the ball off but goes himself and his shot is blocked.
  • 15:47
46 min: England banging on the door at end of the half - Sweden survive two more corners.
  • 15:47
  • 16:00
That was a very laboured and agricultural effort from Sweden in the first half - Pickford yet to have a save to make. They've got no option but to try and have a go in the second half now.
  • 16:01
    We're back underway!
  • 16:04

46 min: A brighter start from Sweden - Claesson finding Krafth on the right. His deep cross loops up into the air and it's cleared as far as Forsberg on the left.

Moments later an excellent cross is swung in from the left - Berg rises above Young and thumps a header towards the right corner. Pickford makes a brilliant one-handed stop diving to his left.

  • 16:06
49 min: There's a bit more zest to Sweden's play now - encouraged by that chance - but they're still struggling to retain the ball in midfield.
  • 16:06
  • 16:07
51 min: Two bright moments from Trippier, first he heads leaps to head a Henderson ball back across goal, before snuffing out danger at the other end as Sweden looked to break through Toivonen.
  • 16:11
53 min: Kane drops and draws a foul out on the left. Young to swing the free-kick in. He drifts it to the back post where Maguire - who else? - heads it across goal where Sterling tries an overhead kick at the back post. It's back for Maguire with another header - Sweden hack it clear.
  • 16:14
56 min: England pressure - Kane tempting Olsen off his line with a cross from the right, the Sweden 'keeper eventually opting to stay put. Lingard shoots from distance and wins another corner kick. Trippier takes it and Lindelof flicks it clear.
  • 16:15

  • 16:17

England penning Sweden back in their final third - a spell of real sustained pressure. Lingard shoots again and it's deflected out to Trippier. He cuts it back inside to Lingard who clips a lovely first-time ball to the back post. The unmarked Alli thumps a brilliant header past a despairing Olsen.

  • 16:19
62 min: What a save from Jordan Pickford. Excellent play from Sweden down the right, they work it into the box and Toivonen lays it off for Claesson on the edge. He shoots low towards the bottom left corner - Pickford gets down sharply and gets a huge hand to it. A warning.
  • 16:20
64 min: There's a fascinating last half an hour in store now - Sweden starting to show some urgency with England looking dangerous on the break.
  • 16:23
66 min: Another England corner from the right and it sparks chaos in the Sweden box. The ball squirts around and falls for Maguire at the back post - this time he half-volleys the ball into space.
  • 16:25
68 min: England win the ball in the Swedish half and Sterling dances down the inside left channel, looking for Kane in the middle. The ball falls for Alli who tees himself up and volleys with his left. He looks in the mood now he's scored.
  • 16:26
  • 16:26
70 min: Sweden can't get out at the moment, England pressing brilliantly.
  • 16:27
71 min:  Augustinsson swings in a lovely cross from the left - Maguire is equal to it.
  • 16:29
71 min: Great play from Sweden. A lovely ball releases new man Guidetti down the inside left channel and he crosses for Berg. He takes a touch, spins and lets fly with a rising effort with Pickford tips over. The shot was perhaps going over but he had to be alert.
  • 16:33
75 min: England's second goalscorer Alli is replaced by Fabian Delph.
  • 16:35
77 min: Delph crosses for Kane, who works it neatly to Trippier. His excellent first time cross is met with a brilliant clearance ahead of Sterling.
  • 16:36
79 min: Sweden nearly in on the left through Claesson - Walker burns across to snuff out the danger.
  • 16:36
  • 16:39
82 min: Granqvist plays a dangerous first time ball out to the left - vital interception from Young. England break and Lingard runs at the box, trying to curl one into the left corner.
  • 16:40
83 min: Trippier has been outstanding today. He nips in ahead of  Augustinsson to win the ball back - dangerous free-kick for England on the right. This time, Trippier's delivery is poor.
  • 16:40
84 min: Eric Dier comes on for Henderson.
  • 16:44

86 min: Lingard was worked tirelessly today - he's been everywhere. He scampers down the right and draws another foul. Trippier to swing the free-kick in - Granqvist heads it away.

Sweden break and Maguire gets a booking despite winning the ball off Guidetti. There's a yellow card amnesty after the quarter-finals.

  • 16:45
88 min: Sterling turns Lindelof on the right and pulls the ball back for Delph in the box. He can't control it and then the two look at each other as the ball bounces out for a goal kick.
  • 16:47

89 min: Granqvist draws Maguire into a foul right on the edge of the box. A late lifeline for Sweden - we all know how dangerous Larsson is from deadballs.

It's to the right of the D and it's  Augustinsson who takes - and he sends it a mile over the bar.

  • 16:47
91 min: Rashford finally brought on for Sterling - who's run himself into the ground. There's five additional minutes.
  • 16:50
93 min: Sweden pumping long balls forward. Kane, who's been quietly excellent, carries it down the left and draws a foul from Larsson.
  • 16:51
95 min: Excellent covering from Rashford as Sweden look to break. They're pressing right to the death.
