  • Hello and Welcome . . . Ireland are about to find out who they will face next month in their playoff for the 2019 World Cup in Russia. Hopefully that won't be Italy or Croatia, with the other two possibilities - Denmark and Switzerland - certainly appearing the better prospects. So it's a 50/50 chance of a positive draw!

The playoff draw will take place at Fifa headquarters in Zurich, and gets underway at 1pm Irish time.

We'll keep you up to date with all the latest right here, so be sure to get in touch throughout via either the comments section ('Contact Us' tab) or on Twitter (@DonoghueEamon).

    Let's get started . . .
  • On the European side of the World Cup qualification, the nine group winners (France, Portugal, Germany, Serbia, Poland, England, Spain, Belgium and Iceland) have all already qualified along with hosts Russia.

The eight best second-placed teams will now meet in the playoffs for the four remaining spots. Today's draw sees them split into two pots - one with the highest four teams ranked highest in the Fifa world rankings.

Therefore Switzerland, Italy, Croatia and Denmark will be in Pot 1, while Northern Ireland, Sweden, Republic of Ireland and Greece will be in Pot 2.

The order of fixtures (home and away) will be determined by the draw and who comes out first; and both legs will be played between November 9th and November 15th.

  • Ruaidhrí Croke has put together an excellent explainer piece;  World Cup playoffs: All you need to know ahead of Tuesday’s draw.

    Read that here

  • Emmet Malone explains  that the Republic of Ireland's record in playoffs is a testament to the importance both of being seeded and then enjoying some good fortune; "Two of the team's only three successes at this stage of the competition have come against Iran and Estonia, who would have been regarded as the weakest sides possible on those occasions. The problem this time around is that we might be regarded as being in contention for that particular title."

    And here's a full breakdown of Ireland's history in playoffs . . .

  • Now it's time to get to business!!
  • Former Spain and Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro making the draw
  • First out Northern Ireland and they play Switzerland . Great draw
Now it's Croatia... they play Greece
Denmark up next .. they play ... (*please be Ireland)
  • Republic of Ireland!!
  • So Northern Ireland face Switzerland. Croatia play Greece . And Sweden face Italy
  • funky chicken WE GOT DENMARK !!!!! YYYYYEEEEESSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • That's the dream draw for Martin O'Neill's team. They will be away in the first leg. Certainly it won't be easy but it could have been a lot worse! Good draw for Northern Ireland too against Switzerland. They are at home for the first leg
  • Martin o'neill Happy days
  • Denmark finished second in Group E five points behind Poland, although they beat the latter 4-0 in their home tie. Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen is their main man.
  • DanishViking So sorry for you guys! See you in Copenhagen!
  • So that's that ... Ireland will be away to Denmark and Northern Ireland will be home to Switzerland on November 9th-11th. And vice versa for the second legs on November 12th-14th. Both camps will be happy out.
