Hello, hello, hello. It's day eight of the World Cup - we've just had our 10th penalty in 21 games - and VAR continues to dominate the conversation as we continue with the second round of group stage games in Russia.

Up next we have France v Peru in Ekaterinburg - a must win game for Peru although they have been granted a lifeline by Denmark only drawing with Australia. My name is Ruaidhrí Croke and I will be with you for the afternoon as Didier Deschamps France team look to make it two wins from two and book their place in the last 16.

Team news and build-up on the way!

Two changes for France from the side that beat Australia in their opening game with Giroud and Matuidi coming in for Dembele and Tolisso.

Peru are trying to play catch-up after an opening loss to Denmark. Top-scorer Paolo Guerrero, whose build-up was stunted by a drugs ban which was then overturned, starts up top in place of Jefferson Farfan.

Subs: Mandanda, Areola, Sidibé, Rami, Mendy, Kimpembe, Nzonzi, Tolisso, Lemar, Fekir, Dembélé, Thauvin

The Peru fans lit up their opening game against Denmark by taking over the stadium and flooding Saransk with those famous white shirts with the red sash. And it seems the vast majority of them have made the trip 1,339km east to Yekaterinburg to see the South Americans take on a France side who looked underhwelming in their opening game against Australia.

A win here for France would book their spot in the last 16 and leave the second place up for grabs between the Aussies and the Danes but if Peru can get something here they will keep themselves in the hunt, albeit only just about if it's only a draw they manage.

Yekaterinburg is the furthest east of all of the host cities, some 1,764km from the capital Moscow and yet it's still barely in to Russia. To give an idea of the scale of the country - our man in Yekaterinburg, Emmet Malone - flew there from Sochi yesterday and it took six hours. Quite the trip.

He got there just in time for the France press conference where Didier Deschamps spoke about the impact of Olivier Giroud and why he's sich a hard player to leave out.

The Chelsea striker starts today after missing out against Australia. Deschamps praised him yesterday, saying "sometimes when he plays Olivier seems to be on his own wavelength, not the same one as the others, but then when he is not there you realise how useful he can be."

You can read Emmet's dispatch from Yekaterinburg below and check out the next update for a look at the not so impressive curtains in his hotel.

France have plenty of work to do following their opening win

Below you can also read our profiles of both teams.

Will things finally click for mercurial France?

Les Marseillaise strikes up in Yekaterinburg.

    Just minutes from kick-off now!

  • 15:57

It's a sign of how much the Peruvians have taken over the ground once again that Les Marseillaise barely sounded like it was being sung.

Himno Nacional del  Perú, on the other hand, was belted out with gusto.

It's almost time for kick off!

  • 16:00
  • 16:00
1 min:  We're underway in Yekaterinburg!  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:03
3 mins: Peru have have made a good start here and France have barely touched the ball. Peru are under serious pressure here and they have come flying out of the blocks but they could be in a spot of bother as Andre Carrillo has just gone down injured.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:07
6 mins: Carrillo is okay and back up. France haven't been allowed to settle for a second with Peru enjoying all of the ball. Yoshimar Yotun has just looked up, seen Hugo Lloris off his line, and had a go from the halfway line but it sails over the bar.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:10

10 mins: France have settled down a bit now and, for the first time, moved into the Peru third of the pitch. Giroud is already giving France that bit more of a presence up front which they lacked in the opening game.

Matuidi's presence is also allowing Pogba to play a little higher up the pitch and get on the ball more. Can he perform and stick it to the critics? This is certainly the stage on which to do it.  (France 0-0 Peru)

  • 16:12

    12 mins: Chance for France!

The first opportunity of the game falls to Antoine Griezmann but he makes a mess of it. After Giroud slipped him in down the right Griezmann took the shot on first time from a tight enough angle but it flew well wide.  (France 0-0 Peru)

  • 16:13
14 mins: France have weathered the early Peruvian storm and are beginning to dominate possession now. They've just won the first corner of the game on the left hand side.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:15

15 mins: Griezmann's delivery into the front post is cleared out for another corner with Kylian Mbappe throwing himself to the ground appealing for a penalty and then asking for VAR. Nothing going.

Griezmann's second delivery is much better, finding the head of Varane who met it nicely but sent it flying narrowly wide of the right hand post.  (France 0-0 Peru)

  • 16:18

16 mins: Another chance for France!

A well played ball forward is nodded back to Griezmann by Giroud and he hits it first time on the half-volley but Pedro Gallese saves well.

Peru looked to counter and Matuidi gets the first booking of the game for a cynical foul.  (France 0-0 Peru)

  • 16:19
19 mins: Peru need a little bit of respite and they've got it. Rodriguez has won a free kick in a good position on the left wing, near the corner flag. Yotun to deliver.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:20
20 mins: It's a lovely ball in but some pushing and shoving in the area means it's a free kick for France. It's been a lively first 20 minutes.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:21
  • 16:24

23 mins: Peru win a free kick in the French half and Paolo Guerrero picks up a subsequent yellow card for going head-to-head with Umtiti. That was fairly needless.

Anyway, the free kick somes to nothing and France can regroup.  (France 0-0 Peru)

  • 16:27
27 mins: There's a great ebb and flow to this game with Peru now starting to get back on top. Carrillo has looked very tidy in the midfield. driving most of the attacks and generally just proving a nuisance for Pogba and Kante.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:30
30 mins: Mbappé has barely been in this game so far but he's just done well to win a free kick in the Peruvian half after being barged from behind by Ramos. However, the set piece goes to waste with a poor pass going out for a Peru throw-in.  (France 0-0 Peru)
  • 16:32

    31 mins: Chance for Peru!

The first real chance of the game for the South Americans goes to their captain Guerrero but he's foiled by Lloris.

Cueva went down the left and cut inside. Guerrero had made a dart towards the near post and Cueva picked him out. A super first touch from the top scorer took the ball away from Umtiti and on to his left foot, shooting back across the goal to his right. However, his effort wasn't far enough right, allowing Lloris to get down and save with his knee. What a chance that was.  (France 0-0 Peru)

  • 16:34

  • 16:38

36 mins: France take the lead and it's a bad mistake from Peru that cost them.

Aquino dallied on the ball 30 yards from his own goal and Pogba stole it off him. The Frenchman turned and found Giroud who had made the diagonal run across the box to the left. The striker looked to shoot on the turn on his left foot but Rodriguez got the block in. However, his deflection took it up and over the head of goalkeeper Gallese where it landed on the foot of Mbappé no more than a yard out and he steered it into the empty net to become the youngest ever French scorer in a World Cup.

Peru probably don't deserve that but you can't afford to dawdle in possession when you're up against this French midfield.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 16:40

40 mins: Peru need to respond now. They had started so well and were right in this game but a lapse in concentration has cost them.

Their fans have grown even louder, willing their team on. It's make or break for the South Americans now. They must score or they're out of the World Cup after two games.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 16:44

44 mins: France are looking to pounce and make it two now.

A fast counter attack has Peru at sixes and sevens. Giroud's pass from the right found Griezmann who swivelled and found Hernandez with a first time pass. The left-back sped onto it in the box and shot first time but it was saved by Gallese. It rebounded to Hernandez but his second effort on the volley was hammered into the ground and bounced wide.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 16:45
45 mins: Two minutes of additional time.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 16:47
    HALF TIME: France 1-0 Peru
  • 16:55

Well, Peru will be absolutely kicking themselves. Again.

They're 45 minutes from being eliminated and it could have been all so different were it not for two self-inflicted errors in their first two games. Cueva's missed penalty cost them a point in the opening game against Denmark and Yotun delaying on the ball 30 yards from his own goal may cost them here.

After making a great start and dominating France for the first 20 minutes or so Peru worked the first proper chance of the game with Guerrero's shot but Lloris was up to it. They're now at make-or-break stage and have 45 minutes to save themselves and give their army of fans something to cheer about.

France, on the other hand, are 45 minutes from the last 16. They've been better so far than they were in the first game against Australia with Giroud offering that bit extra up front in holding up the ball to allow Mbappé, Griezmann and Pogba to get up alongside him. They probably don't quite deserve to be leading but they took the chance when it was presented them and ruthlessly took advantage. That's the difference.

  • 17:03

The two teams are back on the pitch and Peru are making changes.

Jefferson Farfan is on to replace Yotun with Anderson Sanatamaria replacing Rodriguez.

  • 17:04
46 mins: We're back underway!  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:07
48 mins: Bit of a stoppage here as Umtiti is treated after clashing with the elbow of Farfan in the air.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:10

    51 mins: Chance for Peru!

What a hit from Aquino! From nowhere the South Americans almost equalised after Farfan teed up Aquino 30 yards from goal. The midfielder ran onto it and unleashed a thunderbolt with the outside of his foot which looked to be going wide but swerved right back in and hit the outside of the post with Lloris nowhere to be seen. What a goal that would have been.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 17:14

55 mins: Peru must get something here and they have come out in the second half looking like a team in exactly that situation.

However, France are clever. They're slowing down the Peruvian play at every opportunity, going down easy for free kicks, taking their time over throw-ins and just generally being very shrewd. Those wily French.

After a good run from Pogba they have a corner on the left.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 17:15
57 mins: Mbappé's ball flies in right on top of the goalkeeper where Umtiti attacks but Gallese does well to punch away and Peru clear.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:20

61 mins: Peru are really on top now. A lovely through ball from Ramos set Flores down the right but his cross was cleared. However, Peru attack again with Cueva feeeding Farfan on the edge of the box. His lovely flick teed up Carrillo but his effort flew way over the bar.

This is great intensity from Peru but they're becoming desperate now.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 17:23
65 mins: As Peru becomes more desperate France are just waiting to hit them on the break. Giroud is the perfect target man to get it up to who will then hold it up. This could go either way now.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:25
66 mins: Carrillo is finding a lot of space on the left wing behind Hernandez but his crosses have been poor. His latest one doesn't beat the first man again. Less than 25 minutes to go now...  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:27

68 mins: Peru have had plenty of long range effort but Lloris will happily watch those fly over the bar all day. Advincula is the latest man to have a go but his effort is also too high. He really should have crossed there.

However, Peru have a corner now after Umtiti blocked down a shot from Guerrero.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 17:29
70 mins: The corner is cleared and France can get up the pitch. They work a chance for Matuidi down the left but Peru defend it well and come away with the ball.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:34

    74 mins: Chance for Peru!

A long, hopeful ball forward is nodded down and picked up by Flores. He plays it out wide where Carrillo moves in to space and sends a ball in to the back post towards Farfan. However, it's a little too far ahead of the striker and his volley on the fly hits the side netting.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 17:34
75 mins: Mbappé - taking as long as is humanly possible to leave the pitch - is replaced by  Ousmane Dembélé.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:37
79 mins: Pogba takes the ball out of the French defence with a typically powerful run and is fouled on the halfway line. That's perfect for France, they can settle it all down again now.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:40
80 mins: Griezmann is replaced by Nabil Fekir as France look to kill more time. Edison Flores is the latest player to be booked after fouling Fekir as soon as he came on. Shortly after,  Aquino is also booked for another foul.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:42
83 mins: Peru are running out of time but they have a free-kick in the French half. Something has to give.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:42
84 mins: Guerrero wins a corner. Will this be the chance?  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:44
85 mins: Nope. It's a poor cross, too high for anyone to get a head on and France can come away with it. Peru have five minutes to score or they're going home.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:45
86 mins: Pogba is booked for a high challenge on Farfan and Peru have a free kick 30 yards out, right in the centre. Here we go...  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:46

    87 mins: Guerrero takes.

He places it nicely up and over the wall but it's straight down the throat of Lloris who gathers easily. Peru are running out of hope.  (France 1-0 Peru)

  • 17:48
89 mins: Pogba is replaced by Steven N'Zonzi.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:49
90 mins: We will have four minutes of additional time. Four minutes for Peru to save themselves.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:50
90+2 mins: France get a corner at the right corner flag. It's crossed in, half cleared and volleyed back by Umtiti but it flies well wide.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:51
90+3 mins: Peru have a free kick in the French half. One last chance.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:52
90+3 mins: And it comes to nothing. The cross is floated in with little or no power, Guerrero heads it on but it bounces out of play.  (France 1-0 Peru)
  • 17:53

    FULL TIME: France 1-0 Peru!

France are into the last 16, Peru are out!

  • 18:00
  • 18:02

So it's all over for Peru and it's two goals that have done them.

A missed penalty in the first game and that mistake for the goal in this game will haunt them and their huge legion of fans for a long time.

France are through but they're less than impressive so far. They were very slow today and their array of talent hasn't really shone yet. However, they'll be looking to peak in the knockout stages and they can do so now that they're through.

Next up we have Argentina v Croatia in Nizhny Novgorod. Join me over here in a few minutes for all the build-up before kick-off at 7pm!

Emmet Malone's report from Yekaterinburg will be online soon. Thanks for reading, bye!
