  • Hello and welcome to the Irish Times World Cup soccer blog for Brazil's clash with Mexico in the Last 16. It promises to be a cracking encounter full of bright, open, attacking football. That's probably bestowed the kiss of death on the game.
  • Who'll be celebrating later this afternoon in the Samara arena? Will it be a case of the  Jarabe Tapatío otherwise known as the Mexican hat dance or will the stadium be swaying to the beat of the Samba rhythms?
  • The Mexican players have apparently died their hair blonde mimicking what the Romania side did in 1998.

  • TEAM NEWS

Brazil's team news confirms that Marcelo hasn't recovered in time and Filipe Luis will continue at left-back.

There's a big surprise in the Mexico starting XI, with a place for the veteran Rafa Marquez. It will be the first time the 39-year old captain will start a match in Russia 2018. In doing so Marquez becomes only the second player to start a game at five World Cups.

  • THE TEAMS

    Brazil:  1 Alisson 22 Fagner 2 Thiago Silva 3 Miranda 6 Filipe Luís 15 Paulinho 5 Casemiro 11 Coutinho 19 Willian 9 Gabriel Jesus 10 Neymar

    Mexico:  13 Ochoa 21 Álvarez 2 Ayala 3 Salcedo 23 Gallardo 16 Herrera 4 Márquez 18 Guardado 11 Vela 14 Javier Hernández 22 Lozano

    Referee: Gianluca Rocchi (Italy)

  • Brazil are unbeaten in their four previous World Cup games against Mexico (W3, D1), keeping clean sheets in all four of those matches.

The most recent World Cup encounter was a group game in 2014 which ended 0-0.

  • Mexico have lost in the Last 16 in each of the last six World Cups.
  • Mexico obviously ran out of peroxide as only two players died their hair blonde. They didn't really make the effort.
  • Time for kickoff.
  • 1 min: A couple of misplaced   Brazilian passes leads to an ealy chance for Mexico coupled with a weak punch from Brazilian keeper  Alisson. Lozano had a shot but it was deflected for a corner, which was cleared.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 3 mins: Coutinho's tackle technique needs work. He gives away a rather obvious free-kick.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 6 mins: Mexico are certainly getting tight when Brazil are in possession, checking the strength of the jersey fabric in the process.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 8 mins: Excellent run by Vela leads to a corner, Mexico's second of the match. Chicharito offside before he collides with  Alisson.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 13 mins: Mexico have been the better side, more fluent on the ball and sharper into the tackle. Brazil look like they're still in warm-up mode.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 15 mins: Lozano and Vela are causing Brazil problems down the flanks.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 18 mins: Great block by Filipe Luis on a shot from Lozano after a pacy Mexican counter-attack.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • Brazil are narrow in their attacking patterns, trying to play though Mexico and it's suiting the latter because they are very compact through the centre. In contrast when Mexico break they are keeping good width in terms of options out wide.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 23 mins: Another sloppy pass this time from Paulinho fails to find its intended target. Brazils basics have been slipshod.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 24 mins:  Ochoa with a fine save from Neymar. The Mexican goalkeeper denies the Brazilian striker. From the resultant corner Jesus with a weak effort from close range.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 26 mins: Neymar glides to the edge of the Mexican penalty area but his pass fails to pick out a colleague. At the other end of the pitch Vela has a self indulgent 'ging' that slews horribly wide. Super tackle by Alvarez on Neymar in the Mexican penalty area. That was perfectly timed and it had to be. The game is opening up.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 31 mins: Pinball in the Mexican box culminates in Jesus having a shot Ochoa parried and eventually cleared but it could have gone anywhere.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 34 mins: Fagner lucky to get away without a booking as he comes through the back of Lozano.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 38 mins, Yellow card: Alvarez clobbers Neymar.
  • 39 mins: Neymar tries his luck from the free-kick, so yards out on the angle and it's a middling effort that doesn't trouble Ochoa.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 41 mins: The 36 degree heat is beginning to have an effect on Mexico's high pressing game as the energy levels have dropped in the last 10-minutes and Brazil are enjoying a little more room on the ball.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • Yellow card: Filipe Luis catches Vela.
  • Half-time: Brazil 0 Mexico 0
  • Mexico were the more fluent side in the first 20-minutes and were sharper in the tackle and breaking up the Brazilian patterns, facilitated by some sloppy passing from Neymar and his mates.
  • However as the half wore on Brazil got more traction in midfield and when Willian pulled wide were able to give him several opportunities to raid down the right wing. Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa made a couple of smart saves.
  • Brazil: 10 shots, 3 on target. Mexico: 5 shots, 0 on target.
  • 20 Fouls:  Neymar has overtaken Isco as the most fouled player at the 2018 World Cup.
  • Like the way Mexico keep three players up on the halfway line even when defending corners. They're looking to break quickly and with width pulling the Brazilian fullbacks towards the touchlines.
  • Half-time: Mexican sub Layun is on for the 39-year-old Marquez.
  • Brazil kick off the second half.
  • Mexico have now played 415 minutes against Brazil in World Cups without scoring a goal.
  • 47 mins: Neymar throws in a couple of step-overs to bamboozle the new man Layun and then Ochoa makes another fine save, this time from Coutinho.

    Brazil 0 Mexico 0

  • 50 mins:  Guardado with a fine run and shot that just clears the crossbar.
  • GOAL: Neymar
  • 52 mins: Backheel from Neymar to Willian on the edge of the penalty area. The Chelsea player makes space for a cross and then drives a superb ball across the penalty area which Neymar slides in to nudge into the net.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • 54 mins: Brilliant run from Willian ends in a foul by Herrera who rightly gets a yellow card. Mexico made a second change J Dos Santos is on for Alvarez.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • 59 mins:  Fine reflex save by Ochoa from Paulinho. There was so much to admire in the build-up not least Neymar playing a pass through the fullbacks legs. Casemiro gets a yellow card.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • 61 mins: Alisson touches a Vela shot over the crossbar. To their immense credit Mexico are not going to die wondering as they say.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • Those yellow cards for Casemiro (Brazil) and Herrera (Mexico) mean that one of them will miss the quarter-final through suspension.
  • 63 mins: Ochoa saves Mexico again this time from the excellent Willian.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • STAT ATTACK: Brazil have overtaken Germany as the top goalscorers in World Cup history.
  • 67 mins: Willian is terrorising the Mexican defence and he sets up Neymar but Brazil's goalscorer side-foots his effort wide from 12 yards. It was deflected.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • Someone has stepped on Neymar's ankle. He's done a triple salchow and double lutz with a reverse flip and tucked pike. That boy can roll.
  • 73 mins: Gimenez came on for Chicharito about six minutes ago. You wouldn't send Neymar up for a round of drinks at closing time. Two statements of fact.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • Yellow card: Salcedo. Yes you've guessed it for a foul on......... Neymar.
  • There are 15 minutes remaining. Brazil 1 Mexico 0
  • 79 mins: The game has opened up again and there are chances at both ends. Fernandinho for Paulinho

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • 83 mins: Gallardo catches Thiago Silva with a shoulder to the rib cage. There'll be a break in play while the Brazilian captain counts them.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • 85 mins: Firmino on for Coutinho. Mexico have a corner.

    Brazil 1 Mexico 0

  • GOAL: Firmino
  • 87 mins: Neymar turns supplier as he races clear and pushes a pass cum shot with the outside of his right foot into the path of Firmino, who runs the ball into the Mexican net.

    Brazil 2 Mexico 0

  • Six minutes of stoppage time, half of which is the time elasped between Neymar going to ground and being found 1,000 rolls later in the carpark.
  • Two minutes remaining. Mexico enjoying all the possession but there's no end product in terms of a shot on target.
  • Full-time: Brazil 2 Mexico 0
  • Mexico go out in the round of 16 for the seventh World Cup in a row.
  • Brazil will now play the winner of tonight's game between Belgium and Japan.
  • Goals from Neymar and Firmino, three muntes after the Liverpool player's arrival on the pitch as a substitute send Brazil through. Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa had a fine match reinforcing that after a fine opening 20-minutes from Mexico Brazil dominated possession and created several excellent goalscoring opportunities, two of which they took.
