  • Good afternoon!

Welcome to our coverage of the women's Hockey World Cup final between Ireland and the Netherlands (tip-back 4.30).

Coming into the year 2018, we all knew we had a World Cup summer to look forward to. What we didn't realise was that Russia was just a warm-up for the main event.

Ireland headed into this tournament as the second-lowest ranked side, and the 16th ranked side in the world. Progression from the group stages into a maiden quarter-final was seen as a remarkable achievement - a semi-final scarcely believable.

Yet today Graham Shaw's side will participate in a World Cup final - the first team to do so in the nation's history. Their journey to today's showpiece has been as thrilling as it has unexpected, with India and then Spain beaten in penalty shoot-outs.

Standing between the Girls in Green and an improbable gold medal are the Netherlands - the world's number one side, exponents of total hockey.

It is a stiff task - but having come this far, Shaw's side will fancy their chances of putting it up to the Dutch at London's Olympic Stadium.

We will be bringing you all of the action, as Ireland bid to create another slice of history.

    Come on!!!

  • TEAM NEWS:

Graham Shaw has named the same XI which started in the 1-1 semi-final draw against Spain. A hamstring injury for Megan Frazer means she misses out - Pembroke's Emily Beatty has been flown to London to take her place on the bench. Not a bad call to get.

The Dutch have made three changes to the side who needed penalties to get past Australia - Kitty van Male, Lidewij Welten and Frederique Matla all come into the starting XI.

  • We've still got a bit of time before the tip-back in London, so you can read Johnny Watterson's piece on yesterday's epic semi-final HERE.

And you can read the thoughts of the Dutch camp ahead of today's final HERE.

And for those of you who are firmly on the bandwagon but don't know anything about hockey, you can swot up with our bluffer's guide HERE.

  • Spain have won the bronze medal, after they beat Australia 3-1. The same Aussies who held the Dutch yesterday. . .
  • The teams are out in London!
  • This is a visually stunning spectacle. Ireland in electric green, the Dutch in electric orange - played out in a sea of the deepest blue. The sun is shining again in London and it's a full house.
  • Time for the anthems.
  • Smiles all round from Ireland as they sing Ireland's Call. They look like they're having the time of their lives. Representing your country in a World Cup final, who wouldn't be?
  • The Dutch are going with a 3-5-2 formation - Ireland 5-3-2. Ireland to get us underway. Here we go!

    BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPP!

  • (Q1) 2 min: Early Ireland possession but they lose it in midfield, the Dutch transition quickly on the counter but there are plenty of green bodies back. First effort on goal from the Dutch, van Maasakker dragging it wide of McFerran's left hand post.
  • Q1 3 min: Excellent screening from Hannah Matthews on the edge of the Irish D - Chloe Watkins the drawing a foul on halfway. Deidre Duke - who starts despite being named on the bench - drives down the left flank but the ball just runs away from her.
  • (Q1) 5 min: This is a bright start from Ireland. Anna O'Flanagan reads the play well and intercepts on halfway - driving deep into the Dutch half.
  • GOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!

    IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 1 (WELTEN 7 MIN)

  • The first sustained spell of Dutch pressure ends with a goal. The Netherlands press down the right and McFerran does well to smother a shot inside the Ireland D. However, the Dutch retain the ball and Welten somehow makes space to work the shot with her back to goal, the ball squeezing inside McFerran's left upright. A sucker punch after a promising start.

    (Q1) 8 MIN: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 1

  • (Q1) 9 min: A mistake from Watkins and the Netherlands have the game's first penalty corner.

They work it to Lauren Stam on the edge of the D - she has considerably more hair than namesake Jaap - but her shot is screwed wide on the right.

  • (Q1) 10 min: The game is now being played exclusively in Irish territory - the Dutch press is intense and Ireland are struglling to get past it.
  • (Q1) 11 min: Neat play from Watkins, drifting in from the left and picking it up - she darts towards the Dutch box but her pass scoots out past the endline.

The Dutch counter and earn another penalty corner from the left. Shirley McCay makes a brilliant block from the first effort and skipper  van den Heuvel can't turn the rebound goalwards.

  • (Q1) 13 min: The Netherlands' ball retention is impressive. When they lose it they're all over Ireland - think Pep Guardiola's Barcelona.

A Dutch move breaks down and Ireland break. Ali Meeke fizzes a shot which is blocked and takes the free quickly - they work it into the D where Anna O'Flanagan is penalised. Better from the Irish.

  • END OF Q1 - IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 1
  • The second quarter is underway!
  • (Q2) 1 min: Early possession for the Dutch, moving the ball deep and then probing down the channels. Kitty van Male schemes down the left and gets to the byline but she's quickly snuffed out.
  • (Q2) 3 min: The Dutch are playing a slightly deeper line now but again their ball retention is good - Elena Tice has to make a vital challenge on the edge.
  • GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!

    IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 2 (JONKER 19 MIN)

  • Ireland can't get out and give the ball away deep inside their own half. McFerran is forced into a couple of fine saves but it's third time lucky for the Dutch - Kelly Jonker fizzing a low effort on the turn past Ireland's prone 'keeper.

    (Q2) 5 MIN: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 2

  • (Q2) 6 min: The Dutch nearly make it three, they work a penalty corner from the right and van Maasakker lofts her effort wide.
  • (Q2) 7 min: Mullan drives Ireland down the left and for a change the Dutch are penned in - that killer touch is missing though and the Netherlands clear with a free.
  • (Q2 8 min): The ball deflects into McCay inside the Irish D and she is unfortunate to concede a short corner. Again the Dutch work it for van Maasakker who draws another fine save out of McFerran. The Dutch may have Stam but Ireland have got Edwin van der Sar.
  • (Q2) 10 min: More dogged defence from McCay to win the ball back for Ireland inside the D and earn a free in the process. Ireland break through Anna O'Flanagan and are quickly on the fringes of the Dutch D - that final ball is still lacking, and the Netherlands get bodies back. They are relentless.

    IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 2

  • (Q2 13 min): Frederique Malta is unmarked in the Irish D and McCay makes another vital block - but a video referral shows it hit her foot. A fifth penalty corner for the Netherlands.
  • GOOOAAAALLLL!!!

IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 3 (28 MIN VAN MALE)

  • The Dutch short corner is moved to van Male at the back post who drills a low finish past McFerran. Total hockey.

    (Q2) 14 MIN: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 3

  • GOOAAAAALLLLL!!!

    IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 4 (PHENINCKX 30 MIN)

  • The ball is moved to Pheninckx on the right in acres of space - she steadies herself before flashing an excellent shot from the angle into the roof of the net. McFerran had no chance.

    (Q2) 15 MIN: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 4

  • HT: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 4
  • Ireland face an uphill battle now. The Dutch are frighteningly good - a serious step up from anything Shaw's side have faced so far. Relentless with and without the ball and clinical in front of goal.
  • The second half is underway in London!
  • GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!

    IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 5 (KEETELS 32 MIN)

  • The Dutch pick up where they left off before the big break, they pen Ireland in and Welten squares the ball for an unmarked Keetels to tap home.

    (Q3) 3 MIN: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 5

  • (Q3) 4 min: The scoreboard is slightly misleading in that Ireland have actually defended well here - particularly one-on-one. Yvonne O'Byrne ends a dangerous Dutch move with a fine stick block inside the D.

Moments later, though, Matthews concedes another penalty corner.

  • GOOOOALLLLL!!!!

IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 6 (VAN MAASAKKER 34 MIN)

  • It's turning into a van Maasakker. Another Dutch penalty corner is worked to their number 13 who rifles a shot past McFerran and into the top right bin.

    (Q3) 6 MIN: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 6

  • (Q3) 7 min: A rare foray into the Dutch half for Ireland, but the Netherlands have been as supreme in defence as they have in attack.
  • (Q3) 11 min: Roisin Upton makes a fine block on the right and needs a few moments to gather herself afterwards - the ball was travelling. Slick Dutch play and Keetels dances into the D, forcing yet another penalty corner.

But this time the Dutch make a hash of it and Ireland break! They have a three on two but can't make it count, a ball to the left is overcooked and orange shirts flood back. A golden opportunity.

  • (Q3) 14 min: The Dutch have kept Anna O'Flanagan quiet this afternoon - she pops up and tries one from distance but it skids harmlessly wide.
  • END OF Q3 - IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 6
  • The final quarter of the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup is underway.
  • (Q4) 1 min: Deep possession for Ireland - would be brilliant if they can keep a clean sheet in the final 15.
  • (Q4) 5 min: Ireland are going down swinging. Mullan picks off the Dutch in midfield and finds Nicola Daly with a searching ball down the left. Cute skill by Daly and she dances into the box, forcing a smart save from Anne Veenendaal at her near post.
  • (Q4) 6 min: The Dutch have a penalty corner and force a smart save from replacement 'keeper Grace O'Flanagan. They have another roll of the dice but Ireland hold firm, McCay getting a stick to the chops as as shot is flashed wide.
  • (Q4) 10 min: It's been a fine effort from Ireland in the fourth quarter, the Dutch are still moving the ball neatly but Shaw's side are defending well one-in-one.
  • (Q4) 12 min: The ball breaks for Xan de Waard on the edge of the Ireland D and she fizzes an effort towards goal on the half-volley - Grace O'Flanagan sticks out a big left boot to turn it behind. Replays show it would have tailed wide but a good save nontheless.
  • (Q4) 13 min: Ireland resolute - this time Tice making a vital stick block in the Irish D. Welten then forces another save from Grace O'Flanagan.
  • FT: IRELAND 0 NETHERLANDS 6

THE NETHERLANDS WIN THE WORLD CUP!

  • Ireland's Chloe Watkins: "It's funny to be disappointed when you've still got silver. They were a class above today, they are number one for a reason. But we're proud of what we've done and we'll collect our medals with a smile on our faces."
  • Today was Watkins 200th cap for Ireland - not a bad way to bring it up, despite the result.
  • Ayeisha McFarron has been named the goalkeeper of the tournament!
  • Ireland are heading onto the pitch to collect their silver medals - smiles all round.
  • Right, thanks for joining this afternoon. The dastardly Dutch were a cut above but Ireland can be incredibly proud of their efforts in London.

    Cya!
