  • Hello and Welcome... It might just, be the League Cup, but tonight's Round of 16 meeting between Manchester United and Manchester City is a big, big game for both teams.

Particularly so for United. Struggling in the league, and having already been taken apart by their rivals in the first derby of the season. City meanwhile have failed to win any of their last five games.

This is United versus City. It's Pep Guardiola versus Jose Mourinho. It's definitely not, just the League Cup.
  • Teams are out..

Manchester United:  De Gea; Valencia, Rojo, Blind, Shaw; Carrick, Herrera; Mata, Pogba, Rashford; Ibrahimovic. Subs: Romero, Darmian, Fellaini, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Depay, Young.

Manchester City:  Caballero; Maffeo, Otamendi, Kompany, Clichy; Aleix Garcia, Fernando, Nolito; Navas, Iheanacho, Sane. Subs: Gunn, Gundogan, Sterling, Aguero, Adarabioyo, Fernandinho, Kolarov.

  • United with four changes but that line-up certainly shows you the importance placed on this fixture by Mourinho.

De Gea, Pogba, Rashford, Ibrahimovic. All the big guns are out.

City meanwhile have rested their big names. Pep explained in his pre-match interview that this is "the last competition in terms of importance."

  • This is a huge game for Mourinho. Guardiola's selection adds to the pressure on United to win, and play good football in front of the expectant Old Trafford crowd. The teams are out
  • A redemption derby? Tough times for both Pep and Jose in Manchester at the moment. And very little else would top a win here for the fans of both clubs. Old Trafford is rocking as usual and we are almost ready to go
  • GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Chelsea - Cheikhou Kouyate gets the scoring underway in London after just 11 minutes
  • Game on at Old Trafford!!
  • Big chance for City early on. Navas skins Luke Shaw down the right flank, he swings it into the box and from point blank range  Iheanacho heads over. He was completely blinded, stuck between the two centre halves, and his instincts were slightly off. Worrying start for United, especially after what happened against Chelsea on Sunday (2')
  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 (7') City looking to press United high up, but both teams starting comfortably and holding possession well
  • Penalty call there for City, Pedro - again - eases past Shaw, this time on the inside. He slips a pass into the box and Carrick appears to have tripped Aleix Garcia. In truth there was very little in it. A coming together
  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 (15') Iheanacho picks up a cheap yellow for an adjudged trip on Daley Blind. The first of the game.

City with just 53 per cent of the possession so far, very little by their usual standards. Michael Carrick's involvement is really settling United here. Retaining possession far better than in recent games

  • A nice bit of interplay from United on the counter - involving Rashford, Mata, Pogba and Ibrahimovic with a lovely weighted layoff.  Otamendi comes in with a late foul though on Mata to disrupt.

Ibra smashes the resultant free into the wall. (0-0 after 22 minutes)

  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 (25') - Yellow card for Valencia, a late, hard challenge on Fernando.
  • Pogba is struggling again here. Fernando doesn't buy his fade, and he turns into the City player and fouls. His passes have been telegraphed and casual in the rare instances that he has been on the ball. Against this young City team United really need him to start bossing things
  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 (35')  -  United growing into this, City appear frustrated and since the half chance after two minutes and that penalty call - they have not looked at all threatening. United will be content
  • Best chance of the game for the hosts. Luke Shaw breaks away down the left, cuts back to Pogba. The French man though lets it roll on to Ibrahimovic. Otamendi dives out to get in a crucial block. A goal saving block for sure
  • And then comes an even better chance, again down the left, this time Rashford finds space in the box, he stays calm, cuts in on his right. But he delays a second too long and is blocked. 37 minutes gone and City are under pressure here
  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 (38')  - Pogba breaks away down the right and puts in a lovely teasing ball to Ibrahimovic but  Caballero does excellently to come out and palm away. Very brave from the City goalkeeper
  • Zlatan with a sloppy pass, cut out by Nolito but his through ball to  Iheanacho is over-hit. End to end stuff these last five minutes. Still no goals however
  • Ibrahimovic has given the ball away three times in a row here. He has though been a decent outlet this first half for United. Constantly showing and taking on the responsibility. United still expect more from him though
  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 (45)    - Just one minute of injury time to be played at the end of the first half
  • HT  Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 - No goals in that first half but some decent chances. City look good on the ball with very little end product. When United up the intensity like they did for the last five minutes of the first half though City have very little response.

Crucially though City have a strong bench to call on if things stay like this for much longer in the second half:  Gundogan, Sterling, Aguero, Fernandinho.  All ready to enter the fray

  • Rashford's chance there. Probably the best of the first half!
  • It's now West Ham 2 Chelsea 0 -  Fernandes with the second goal for the Hammers early in the second half!
  • It looks like Kolarov is coming on for Kompany. Probably a pre-planned change with the City captain only just making his return from injury in recent weeks
  • He also takes over captaincy duties
  • Manchester United 0 Manchester City 0 - The second half is underway. Here's hoping for the first shot, and goal of the game to arrive sooner rather than later
  • Mata with a terrible square pass, cut out by City but  Iheanacho fails to exploit the overlap and his under-hit pass finds Nolito's heel, in an offside position. Poor stuff from Mata initially, and then likewise by the young Nigerian striker
  • Brilliant from United. Herrera and Mata link up on the right, then Ibrahimovic spins Otamendi. He slips it to Pogba who strikes it first time with his left foot. But his shot is tipped onto the post by  Caballero
  • United growing in confidence. This is a second string City team at the end of the day, one they should really be putting away given the quality in their ranks. And playing at home. The crowd is really getting into this now too
  • Another chance. Luke Shaw dinks a lovely weighted pass to Mata on the inline. He squares it with pace but  Caballero is again off his line sharply to fist away
  • GOALLL United are ahead
  • Manchester United 1 Manchester City 0 (54') Zlatan brushes off Otamendi and squares it to Herrera who also barges his way into some space to tee up Juan Mata for a simple finish into the bottom corner
  • City bullied twice in the build up for that goal. With Kompany's loss really badly felt at the heart of this young City team
  • Will Pep call on Aguero, Sterling? This competition mightn't be his priority but the reaction of the United fans to that goal will show you just how much a win will mean here for either club. Irregardless of how, or why
  • Manchester United 1 Manchester City 0 (60) On the hour mark United lead by a single goal. City have had a lot of the ball since that Mata goal.

Mourinho's United it would appear seem content to hold on to the advantage rather than push on and seal it

  • Forget parking the bus, Rashford has just whipped in a cross to Zlatan at the back post. And that should have been 2-0 United. The big Swede just took his eye off it though at the last second
  • Sterling is on for Sane who has struggled. Still no Aguero

  • Another lovely flick from Ibrahimovic almost puts Rashford in. Zlatan has bossed this second half. Free from the physical challenge of Kompany. The City back four out there in Old Trafford right now are very light weight. No chance for them against Zlatan
  • Manchester United 1 Manchester City 0 (70)  With 70 minutes gone City have brought on Aguero for Nolito. Last roll of the dice for Pep
  • West Ham are still leading Chelseas 2-0. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa are both on for the chasing Blues. While Southampton lead Sunderland 1-0
  • United looking to tighten things up further with Schneiderlin on for Mata to sit in front of the back four
  • 13 minutes left. Lots of passing from City but United have all but Zlatan camped in front of their box.

Then Sterling is turned over, Zlatan holds off two men and sends Rashford away. He tries to find Pogba who is bursting a gut to get into the box. But City cut out the cross just ahead of him. Template Mourinho counter attacking right there

  • Full time between Southampton and Sunderland too. A 1-0 win for the Saints
  • Manchester United are seven minutes plus stoppage time away from a win over their rivals and a place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup. Can they hold on?
  • Old Trafford let Aguero know what they think off him. He slips under the challenge of Carrick. And the free-kick goes against him.

City are frustrated here, United coasting through the final stages

  • Manchester United 1 Manchester City 0 (89) City keeping the ball across the middle. A ball to nothing is looped over the top and Otamendi tries to dive on to it but he can't get the header in and De Gea gathers
  • Four minutes of added time
  • Yellow cards for Paul Pogba and Ibrahimovic. Pogba slides in late on Otamendi and Ibrahimovic then kicks the ball away. United bullying City in that instance as they have thorughout the second half
  • Two minutes of added time remaining as Luke Shaw wins a crucial header at the back post
  • Game over. United win. Mourinho gambled, he needed a win and he went full strength. And he got that win, to the delight of Old Trafford!
  • City fans won't appreciate Guardiola's approach to that derby. Fielding a second-string team. And beaten by their bitter rivals. For the first time in the Catalan's managerial career he goes six games without a win
  • FT Manchester United 1 Manchester City 0

Nice to see a friendly handshake between Pep and Jose after the final whistle. Irregarless of City playing a mixture of youngsters and squad players, United won the derby. And they will have the bragging rights until the next derby. A lesson for Pep perhaps? Or maybe not, he clearly has little interest in the League Cup! They have Barcelona to come in the Champions League, and a Premier League to lose.

  • West Ham 2 Chelsea 1

    Southampton 1 Sunderland 0
